  power range
   The Clipsal Power Range has
arrived, and with it comes every-
thing you need for your residential,
commercial or industrial switch-
board requirements.
   Included are MCBs, RCDs,
MCB/RCD combinations, isolating
switches, changeover switches and
busbar systems.
   A huge variety of accessories
are also available to complement
the range, including auxiliary
contacts, shunt trip and voltage
protection devices, push-buttons,
audio and visual signalling devices,
timers, relays, contactors, counters
and transformers.
UR SWITCHBOARD REQUIREMENTS




                              Housing for all mainstream
                          devices is of sturdy, self-extinguish-
                          ing material in a neutral grey colour
                          to suit most switchboard designs.
                              Each Miniature Circuit Breaker
                          has colour coded toggles for easy
                          and safe amperage rating identifica-
                          tion, ‘lift-up’ terminals with combina-
                          tion head screws and a status
                          indicator window with a red/green
                          colour coded flag that is coupled to
                          the contact mechanism. Additional
                          safety is provided with ‘ON’ and
                          ‘OFF’ marking in contrasting colours
                          on toggle mechanisms.
                              All devices are for 35mm DIN Rail
                          mounting with a two position DIN clip
                          of heavy duty moulded material.
                          Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCBs)
                          are constructed with provisions for
                          quick, easy and safe field application
                          of auxiliary contacts and shunt trip
                          release mechanisms. Mechanism
                          locking and sealing wire facilities are
                          also provided where required.

Fault current limiting advantage
    Clipsal offers a range of MCBs to
suit the majority of fault levels found in
the market place. The following

    The time taken for the contacts
to open after the magnetic trip is

    Furthermore, the current re-
duces very sharply from the peak,
exhibiting a cut-off characteristic
similar to that of a fuse. This in turn
reduces the effect of a short circuit
on cables and the installation, and
increases selectivity to upstream
protective devices.

    Magnetic tripping

    There are two types of

                        How an RCD works
                             The RCD works by constantly
                        monitoring and comparing the
                        current flow in both the Active and
                        Neutral circuits of an electrical
                        installation.
                             During normal operation, these
                        Active and Neutral currents are in
                        balance. However, should any
                        current flow to earth, an imbalance
                        is created in these circuits. If this
                        imbalance is sufficient, the RCD will
                        cut the electrical supply.
                             Apart from the protection from
                        electrocution that an RCD offers, it will
                        also cut off power to expensive
                        electrical equipment in the event of
                        an electrical fault to earth. This
                        protects appliances against costly
                        damage and the installation against

 Standard Type

 Conditionally surge current proof (250A 8/20 µS) without time
 delayed tripping.

 G-Type

 Clipsal’s many years of experience as a manufacturer of RCDs has pro-
 vided us with the knowledge to design RCDs that prevent unwanted
 tripping caused by electrical disturbances.
 G-Type RCDs have two built-in designs to help prevent this:
 1. Surge current protected to 3000A.
    RCD will not trip on a spike on the power line.
 2. 10mS delayed.
    RCD will handle a short occurrence of residual current without tripping.

 S-Type

 The S-Type of time delay selective RCD is the only type suited for series
 installation with other RCD types provided that the ratio of tripping current of
 the subsequent RCD is no more than 1/3 of the tripping current of the S-Type.
 Please note: If an RCD other than an S-Type is installed in series, selectivity    29
 will not occur. (ie either or both RCDs could trip during earth fault.)
 The S-Type also has built in resistance to trip under a short term surge
 up to 5000A.
 S-Type residual current devices are not to be used for personal protection
 (Refer AS 3175).
