Folic Acid (from Calcium Folinate) 0.745 mg

DESCRIPTION:
Folic acid is the most stable of the reduced folates and is more easily transported into the CNS than folate. Folic
acid is essential for cellular growth and cell division along with formation of all new cells, particularly red blood
cells. It is important in methylation reactions.

MECHANISM:
Folic acid (5 formyltetrahydrofolate) bypasses the decimjugation and reduction steps. It is then further
converted to 5 methyltetrahydrofolate in the enterocytes, which is absorbed directly avoiding the biliary
secretion and re-absorption process. It appears that folate deficiencies may cause inability to convert to an
active and useful form.

INDICATIONS:
•Alcoholism
•Anemia
•Cervical dysfascin (prevention)
•Chron’s disease
•Depressive disorders
•Lactation
•Osteoporosis (homocysteine pathways)
•Periodontaldisease
•Pregnancy *

* It is required for proper functioning of neuronal cells and it is necessary for closure of the neural tube during
pregnancy.
POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS:
Large doses of folic acid may mask symptoms of a Vitamin B12 deficiency. Symptoms of folic acid deficiency are
heartburn, frequent infections, anemia, and cognitive dysfunction.

POSSIBLE INTERACTIONS:
Drugs that may deplete levels of folic acid include oral contraceptives, potassium sparing diuretics, bile acid
sequestrants, anti-convulsants, corticosteroids (prednisol), NSAID’s, sulfasalazine, methotrexate,
trimethopium-containing antibiotics, H2 receptor antagonists, aspirin, antacids, alcohol, cycloserine,
pyrimethamine, antibiotics, biguanides, and palsalates. High doses of folic acid may alter the metabolism of
phenytoin, phenobarbitate, and peimidone. High doses of folic acid may decrease the efficacy of methotuate
(in chemotherapy).

                                                  PRECAUTIONS:
