Camtasia Studio 4 Training
What’s New
Playback choices
Sometimes it’s hard to predict what your viewers will need. Will they watch your videos
on a laptop? Or would they prefer an MP3 or iPod video file to take along? Now you can
stop guessing and give your audience a variety of options. Choose the primary file format
you want, then add iPod and/or MP3 to the production list, and even attach a PowerPoint
presentation. Then, produce them all at once.

Sound
Filter out background noise automatically … Equalize volume levels …

Video Encoding
Have you seen Camtasia Studio’s perfect-quality Flash SWF or new Flash Video (FLV)
files? How about the incredible results of QuickTime's H.264 compression? With so
many choices, it can be difficult to decide which is best for your situation. Camtasia
Studio’s new production preview feature lets you explore options beforehand and quickly
compare the results of different formats and compression settings.

o Good to “start recording paused”

Tips & Smoother Recordings
 Use slide titles on every slide
o Camtasia uses these titles to build table’s of contents
      Smoother recordings
o Use slower “slide transitions” in Powerpoint
             o Use a smaller resolution
 In PPT / Slideshow / Set Up Show / change slide show resolution
                          (at bottom) to 800 x 600

Powerpoint to DVD
      Change dimensions of PPT
             o In PPT / File / Page Setup / Width (7.2) Height (4.8)

o In PPT / Slide show / setup show / browsed by an individual window
                     Turn off scrollbars
o Start the PPT show and then …
 Use camtasia “Recorder” window to start recording
                            Fixed region 720 x 480
 Turn off “fixed starting point”
 Align recorder area to upper left of PPT
o Then drag lower right to get it to fit within flashing
                                      green brackets
                     Stop recording with F10
                     Save
                     Edit recording
 Cut out the beginning sizing stuff

o Flash SWF great for short presentations
o Flash FLV great for longer presentations
   CD

AVI’s Camrecs, Premiere
CAMREC’s
 Required file type when …
o You use a camera at the same time
o Or you want to capture meta-data
 Adding markers during recording … etc.
o If you’re just recording the screen and audio, you can change the default
             output type to AVI
 CAMREC stands for camtasia recording
o Container that can hold lots of stuff
 Similar to zip file …though we can read from it without unzipping
                     it

AVI’s & TSCC Codec
 If you record as AVI, Camtasia is encoding the video using the TSCC codec
          o TechSmith Screen Capture Codec

                                                                                      15
 Every system trying to read the AVI file will need the TSCC codec on that system
o In the past I have found that students need to install this codec to see my
             lectures!!!!!!!!!

Getting The TSCC codec
 Grab it out of the install folder for Camtasia Studio
         o TSCC.exe
   Google
         o TSCC.exe
   Download from Techsmith

          o ENSHARPEN
o Allows AVI’s to be read by QuickTime
                  There’s a codec for both Windows & Macs
 Find under “download video codecs” on Techsmith’s site

Adobe Premiere

o Premiere is setup for DV video … not for screen capture video
   Solution
o Set the Premiere defaults for a project correctly
o Go to techsmith support and search for PREMIERE in the ANSWERS
             area

                 Top left green button
 Allows you to see quality as it was recorded
         o Full screen
 First button in top right
 Shows everything in full screen mode

                                                                                   16
         o Detaching
 Last button in top right

 Good for multiple monitors …
   Tracks
o You can drag blue bar up/down above tracks … makes room

Navigating and cutting
   Zoom (control +, control -)
   Play / Pause (spacebar)
o You then need to move the playhead to where you paused
 Press right arrow key once
 Frame forward / back (right & left arrows)
   Split (control D)
   Undo (control Z)
 Markers to select (control M) and cut (control X)
o Using markers allows us to see where you made cuts …
 Makes things easier when we want to do adjustments (say to
                      audio) later
          o Click on marker … Control D
                   Makes cut

 Make changes in dialog box
   Cut + Transition
o You can also speed things up by just removing the slow stuff
 Perhaps you want to remove some processing, like downloading a
file, so that you show the start then the end but not the entire
                     download
o Good idea to then add a transition to show that time has passed

                                                                                   17
