Dental care is very important for maintaining your horse's performance and well-being.
Hannes Els has become part of our team to assist us with our clients’ equine dental re-
quirements. Many horses are unable to achieve their full potential, due to no or incorrect
dental treatment. A rough guide for maintenance work is once every six months for
horses under the age of ten and once per year over the age of ten. Hannes is an experi-
enced and skilful dental technician having studied with Dr Raymond Hind at the American
School of Dentistry. He uses hand floats only. Please call 031 7691256 to make an ap-
RESPIRATORY VIRUS OUTBREAK
We recently took samples from horses infected by the respiratory virus that has spread
through the racing yards. The samples were cultured on tissue culture and are being iden-
tified at the time of writing. This is the first time in 29 years I have had a virus grown from
swabs taken of respiratory infections. Prof Guthrie from Onderstepoort has confirmed that
the virus is not herpes and we do not recommend vaccinating in the face of a viral infec-
A very high percentage of horses in yards are affected. The symptoms are lethargy/poor
performance/ nasal discharge and cough. They don’t however have a fever. Symptoms
can be likened to a “cold” rather than “flu”. Advice is to cut back on exercise stress and let
them get over it which takes approximately 14 days.
COLIN LEE YARD CLOSES
After a long and illustrious career in training horses both in Zimbabwe and South Africa,
Colin has decided to close his yard. Luckily for the racing industry, and for Wendy White-
head, he has joined Wendy’s team as assistant trainer.
DOES YOUR HORSE SUFFER FROM CHRONIC AZOTURIA?
BY RALPH KATZWINKEL
I was recently presented with a horse that ties up (azoturia) frequently. All the normal
training and feeding tricks had been tried without success. As part of the final work up I
took a muscle biopsy. After some delays and involving specialist pathologists both lo-
cally and at Onderstepoort a diagnosis was finally made – Glycogen storage disease
also known as Polysaccharide storage disease.
This is a genetic condition and is a common problem in the American Quarter horse.
Thoroughbreds have been thought to be free of this genetic flaw. Not so. If you have a
horse in training that keeps on tying up please contact us and have a biopsy taken.
There is no cure. However by drastic changes to the diet these horses are able to
race. Sprinters up to a mile respond better to a high fat/low carbohydrate diet.
Electron microscopy revealed large subsar-
colemmal inclusions consisting of coarse
granular cytoplasmic material. The normal
myofibrillary ultrastructure was severely dis-
rupted or absent in these areas. Pleomorphic
mitochondria was also present
