RUMINSKI, Acting Special Agent-In-Charge of the Chicago Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation; JERRY WHITMORE, Chief of the Freeport Police Department; and STEVEN PUGH, Chief of the Rockford Police Department, today made the following announcement: In Rockford today, Special Agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation arrested LEON L. TILLMON, 37 (DOB: 2/17/1967), of Rockford, Illinois, on a federal complaint charging him with the robbery of U.S. Bank, 1550 West Galena Avenue, Freeport, Illinois on October 28, 2004. Later today, Tillmon will appear in federal court in Rockford for an initial appearance. The initial appearance proceedings will be conducted by U.S. Magistrate Judge P. Michael Mahoney. At that proceeding, it is expected that Judge Mahoney will set a date for Tillmon’s bail hearing. Tillmon will remain in federal custody until the bail hearing. The federal bank robbery charge carries a maximum potential penalty of 20 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, 3 years of supervised release following imprisonment, and full restitution. If Tillmon is convicted of this charge, his actual sentence will be determined by the United States District Court, guided by the United States Sentencing Guidelines. The case was investigated by Rockford Office of the FBI and the Freeport Police Department, with assistance from the Rockford Police Department. The case is being prosecuted in federal court by Assistant United States Attorney Joseph C. Pedersen. Members of the public are reminded that a criminal complaint is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. The defendant is entitled to indictment by a federal grand jury and a fair trial at which time the government has the burden of proving guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. #####
