COLONY, HONEY PLANT AND MARKET CONDITIONS DURING JANUARY, 2011

APPALACHIAN DISTRICT (MD, PA, VA, WV): Colder than normal temperatures continued throughout the month and the area experienced several
snow storms and precipitation in the form of rain and ice. Temperatures averaged ten degrees below normal for most of the month. Snow continued to lie
on the ground in several parts of the District. Beekeepers attended workshops and continued to monitor colonies. Red Maple buds were beginning to
swell in the lower elevations near the end of the month.

ALABAMA: Beekeepers in Alabama were busy getting equipment ready for the spring. Winter losses were average to below average, probably because
of the good honey year and bees carrying over exceptional stores. Some beekeepers were feeding. Bees began raising brood in January and were
collecting tag alder and henbit pollen in North Alabama. Camellias were being worked in South Alabama along with willow and other early blooming
wildflowers. Some colonies were expanding well in South Alabama while North Alabama clusters were small and in still survival mode.

ARIZONA: Temperatures in Arizona were below normal levels the first week of January and above normal levels for the remainder of the month.
Temperatures ranged from a high of 86°F in Yuma to a low of -5°F at Grand Canyon. There was little precipitation across the state in January. As of the
first week of January, 4 of 22 reporting stations had precipitation, with the highest total being .03 inches in a week. The second week of January, only
two stations reported precipitation, with the high total for the week being .10 inches. There was no reported precipitation for the remainder of the month.
Backyard and desert plant bloom, along with various citrus were the main sources of nectar and pollen. Bee activity was limited. Many Arizona hives
were at other locations, mainly California, for pollination of nut and fruit trees. Demand for honey remained good.

ARKANSAS: Various trees provided pollen and nectar. Colonies were in generally good condition. Temperatures were above normal and rainfall was
adequate. Demand and supply were good.

CALIFORNIA: The month began with heavy rain to the North Coast, with moderate showers across the interior of Northern California and bringing
strong, gusty winds for Southern California. Another fast moving storm then moved across the State, spreading showers across the entire State. As the
month progressed, a more or less stagnant weather regime remained in place over much of California. This meant cool and foggy conditions across the
Central Valley, while Southern California enjoyed sunny and warm conditions. A couple of weak weather systems passing through the Pacific
Northwest did brush the North, bringing some showers to the northern coast and interior. The strongest brought measurable rain to the Sacramento and
San Joaquin Valleys. Southern California reported virtually no measurable precipitation at all this month.
Beekeepers are currently feeding sugar water and other pollen substitutes as the bees continue to winter. Where available, bees are feeding on wild
mustard, rosemary, mint, borage, eucalyptus, Manzanita, and various wildflowers.

Honey bees for pollination were brought in from out-of-state and placed in central distribution areas. Thousands of beehives are being trucked into
California as preparations continue for almond bloom pollination. The trees need bees to pollinate the blossoms, which then develop into nuts. Almond
blooms typically develop during the first week or two of February, although warm air temperatures can prompt an earlier bloom. Because almond
acreage continues to expand in California, more than half of the nation's 2-million-plus beehives are now needed to ensure adequate almond pollination.

COLORADO: There seemed to be an adequate supply of honey with good demand. Prices in Colorado for wholesale honey were as follows: white
honey was $ 1.60 pound and extra light was $1.50 to 1.60 per pound. Wholesale light capping beeswax was $2.25 to $3.50 per pound. There will be a,
“Beginning Beekeepers Workshop”, in Colorado Springs on March 12-13, 2011. For more information regarding this workshop, other workshops across
the State, or the Colorado State Beekeepers Association, contact John Hartley at 719-495-1251 or email: Info@ColoradoBeekeepers.org.

FLORIDA: Not available at time of release.

GEORGIA: In the northern part of the state beekeepers reported no major losses from the winter so far. The Red Maple blossoms were expected to show
up soon, so the bees can get pollen into the hives to feed the broods. Clusters were in good shape and the Russian bee hives were in excellent condition.
In the southern and central areas, bees were in decent shape after a rough winter with plenty of rain and freezing temperatures in between. Supplemental
feeding continued to be necessary due to the cold temperatures. Red Maple began to show up in the last two weeks. Only a few losses were observed for
this time. Most of the beekeepers in the area were awaiting the arrival of Queens from Hawaii as the Australian bees were still unavailable. Prices
remained steady.

IDAHO: There seemed to be a short supply of honey with good demand in Idaho. Prices in Idaho for wholesale honey were as follows: white honey at
$ 1.60 to $1.65 per pound. Retail honey was $2.50 to $3.00 per pound.

ILLINOIS: Bees were tightly clustered and showed very little activity. Stores were about average. Temperatures tended to be slightly above the normal
throughout the state with little precipitation reported. In the few areas which received above average precipitation for the month, it was mainly in the
form of light snowfall. Keepers were preparing their hives for above average snowfall as there were predictions for heavy amounts mainly in the
northern region. Central and southern areas reported the region was still relatively dry. Beekeepers inspected their hives more closely this winter due to
frequent reported cases of Colony Collapse Disorder last season. Beekeepers reported few losses so far this winter and attributed this to the good weather
conditions for overwintering. Honey sales were good. Prices were reported slightly higher than last year.

IOWA, KANSAS, MISSOURI, NEBRASKA: Statewide temperatures and precipitation levels remained below normal. Most beekeepers were busy
with winter management, including feeding, cleaning, repairing and/or purchasing equipment, and ordering bees. Beekeepers reported that package bee
prices were up. California pollination fees had increased as well due to an increase in demand. Honey sales were good. Beekeepers associations have
put out their 2011 schedules of meetings, conferences, state fairs and beekeeping classes.

INDIANA: Temperatures returned to normal for this time of year as daytime temperatures fell into the mid thirties and forties and overnight
temperatures were in the teens to lower twenties. Southern sections had numerous light snowfalls while northern sections received some fairly heavy
snowfalls. Most of the state received relief from the fairly dry fall. In the northern parts of the state, windy conditions kept colonies from making many
cleansing flights. Colonies were clustered tightly and in good condition. Beekeepers continued to monitor their hives as last winter Colony Collapse
Disorder claimed many hives. Honey sales were good. Bulk sales were slow as very little remained in beekeeper’s hands.

KENTUCKY: There is not much to report for Kentucky except for the unusually cold weather. There was only one brief period of warm weather this
winter, in December, and no warm weather in January. There were no direct observations of the bees. But we can expect some consequences – perhaps
some starvation if they went into winter with insufficient stored honey; and perhaps some Nosema disease due to extended periods of confinement.

LOUISIANA: Various trees provided pollen and nectar. Colonies were in good condition. Temperatures were below normal and rainfall was adequate.
Supply and demand were good.

MICHIGAN: The below normal temperatures and snowfall in December and January have many beekeepers concerned about the health of their hives.
There has not been a winter thaw that would allow beekeepers to easily examine hives. The extended confinement of bees in the hives is conducive to
Nosema which may add additional stress to colonies. In some hives, queens can actually begin laying eggs at this time, which uses up any honey stores.
Beekeepers should monitor hives and give supplemental food to sustain the brood as necessary.

MINNESOTA: There seemed to be a short supply of honey with good. Prices in Minnesota for wholesale honey were as follows: white honey was $1.50
to $ 1.60 per pound. Wholesale light capping beeswax was $2.00 to 2.20 per pound and dark capping beeswax was $2.00 per pound.

MISSISSIPPI: Mississippi was wet and cold for most of the month. Due to the weather, beekeepers were unable to get into the hives to check on the
bees. On the warmer days the bees were starting to get out and bring in a little pollen from red maple blossoms and tag alder. Feeding continued to
insure a hardy brood until the weather warms and hives can be inspected properly. Prices for honey remained strong and demand was good.

MONTANA: Most areas of Montana experienced cold, slightly below average temperatures with moderate amounts of precipitation during the month
of January. Beekeepers were busy with equipment repair, and winter inspections of colonies overwintering in home yards. These colonies were in
generally good condition. Keepers also were busy trucking colonies from Montana or warmer staging areas to California for the upcoming almond and
soft fruit pollination season. Bee drop out or losses were within expected levels as keepers worked these colonies for queen and colony strength, dividing
strong colonies to build new ones, and adding supplemental sugar syrup feed where needed. As January drew to a close, keepers were moving their
strong colonies into the first almond, citrus, blueberry, and plum orchards for the early February bloom. Honey demand was good.

NEW ENGLAND: In New England, seasonal winter weather has been the norm with the usual deep freeze and heavy but sporadic periods of rain and
snow fall throughout January. Precipitation in the form of significant snowfall affords the entire region with high moisture levels which should provide
ideal conditions in the spring for abundant pollen and nectar sources. During this month, Nor’easter storms have been constantly bombarding New
England with heavy rain and snowfall. Keepers have been checking colonies for ample supplies of honey for over wintering and feeding as necessary.
Many keepers were reluctant to open hives and chance chilling the bees as most leave enough food in regard to hives showing light stores. Many
beekeepers reported that bees have exhibited the usual late winter pattern of clustering. Many New England beekeepers used hive protection methods
such as wrapping hives with tar paper and/or adding a top insulation board which will help keep the hive warm and reduce wind infiltration. Many
keepers were occupied in building, repairing and maintenance of equipment. Overall, colonies were in moderate to fairly good condition. Those
colonies experiencing good health were reportedly the ones that received regular and aggressive applications of mite treatments. The New England
honey crop this past year showed an average of 60 to 80 pounds per colony. Demand at all retail/wholesale outlets remained good and honey sales
remained firm. Supplies of new crop locally produced honey are continuing to be made available. Prices quoted for 1 lb bottled units were higher at $6.00
to $9.00, mostly $8.50 and occasionally higher inclusive of all varieties; for food service operations prices were steady with wholesale 5 gallon units at
$150.00 to $200.00 mostly $175.00 and occasionally lower for both light and dark raw and natural honey depending on variety and quality.

NEW YORK: Most beekeepers were very troubled with the length of brutal winter temperatures and snow accumulation across the state. These
conditions were making it difficult to service and move honey food sources to hives. Some commercial beekeepers have moved hives to Florida for
overwintering and were exceptionally pleased with the flow from willow sources. Overall, bee losses seem to have tapered slightly from disease such as
CCD in recent months. A few industry contacts expressed some optimism that further studies of pesticides and fertilizers could minimize bee losses even
more in the coming seasons. Honey sales remained strong through the winter and prices were steady.

NORTH CAROLINA: The State of North Carolina continued to suffer from drought conditions. The North Carolina Drought Council reported 38
counties as abnormally dry, 18 in the moderate level and 27 in severe drought. Temperatures were colder than normal throughout the state with the
average temperatures ranging from 27 degrees to 49 degrees. Temperatures dipped into the low teens and as low as 4 degrees on January 14 in the
western part of the state. The eastern part of the state generally ranged in the 20’s during the month. Beekeepers were cautioned to watch for signs of
starvation and to take advantage of any warm weather (over 50 degrees) to feed hives. Honey or sugar water is generally all that is needed this time of
year. The more active the bees are, supplemental feeding needs to be monitored. Beekeeping classes continued to be offered throughout the state with
many people taking up beekeeping as a hobby. Honey sales were excellent for available supplies.

NORTH & SOUTH DAKOTA: The weather was cold and snowy and was expected to continue into February. Bees were in their winter locations.
Most were being fed or getting ready for the almond crop. Many of the bees in northern potato sheds have begun their trek South to California where it
has been drier but still cold.

OHIO: An extended period of harsh winter weather has plagued beekeepers and the health of bee colonies. Bees have been unable to leave hives for
cleansing flights. Of greater concern is a break in weather pattern so that keepers can monitor hives and give supplemental feedings to sustain bees at
least through February. On a bright note, Ohio chapters have reported many new beekeepers, as evident in various workshops this winter across the state.

OKLAHOMA: Pine and cedar provided pollen and nectar. Colonies were in generally good condition. Temperatures were above normal. Supply was
low; demand increased.

OREGON: During February, moderate amounts of precipitation fell on the valley floors and over the mountains ranges of Oregon. Temperatures were
generally mild west of the Cascade Mountains with periods of cold to the east. During January, beekeepers were busy with their winter chores,
maintaining and repairing equipment, and spot checking wintering colonies in home yards. Migratory colonies in California were inspected and later in
January, moved into the early blooming almond groves, which were very close to first bloom in early February. Colony health was generally good.
However, keepers noted some losses. Handlers also reported there seemed to be an adequate supply of pollination colonies for the upcoming season.
Honey demand was good.

SOUTH CAROLINA: Not available at time of release.

TENNESSEE: It has been too cold in Tennessee for the beekeepers to open their colonies to check their status. On days that the temperature made it
into the 40's, beekeepers with Russians and Carniolans have reported that their bees were flying and bringing in pollen. Henbit was the main pollen
source.

TEXAS: Dandelion, elm, and various flowers provided pollen and nectar. Colonies were in generally good condition at the beginning of the month and
improved as the month progressed. Temperatures were above normal; there was little to no rain fall. Supply and demand were good.

UTAH: The supply of honey was short, with many beekeepers stating that their 2010 honey production was now sold. Demand exceeded remaining
supplies in Utah. Prices in Utah for wholesale honey were as follows: light amber honey was $ 1.30 per pound while extra light amber was $1.45 to
$1.65 per pound.

WASHINGTON: Bees were generally in their winter locations at this time. Weather in January has been somewhat typical. Most of the snowfall has
been pushed around. The one major precipitation event in January was mostly rain even in the mountains. Current precipitation levels in the mountains
are ahead of last year and just behind the 30 year average. Snow and water content levels were about the same as last year and both were down some
from the 30 year average. There was little activity except for those travelling South to work their bees in California.

WISCONSIN: Beekeepers monitored their colonies much closer due to the honeybee loses as a result of Colony Collapse Disorder last season.
Colonies had few cleansing flights due to cold and windy conditions. Nearing the end of the month, southern Wisconsin had a parade of weather systems

which dumped approximately one foot of snow or more from mid-December through January. Honey retail sales were good. Bulk honey movement was
slow.

                              Affiliate Professor Oregon State University
In the fall of 2010, 125 surveys were sent electronically and via snail mail to beekeepers offering rental bees in the Mid-Atlantic
region of east coast USA. Discounting undeliverable, hobbyists, individuals reporting no pollination, there was an approximate 25%
return rate same as 2009 return rate. The 2008 survey involved fewer respondents as a pilot project. (See Caron, D.M. 2010. Honey
 Market News XXX # 3 April 14: pgs 9-11).

          In 2010, 9 commercial beekeepers (20,181 col total; 2242 average/individual) and 16 semi-commercials (1459 total colonies;
~96 average/individual) returned valid surveys. This represents response of one additional commercial beekeeper and five additional
 semi-commercial beekeepers from 2009 survey. (Note: Commercial beekeeper is here defined as individuals with 300 or more colonies;
semi-commercials maintain from 50 to 300 colonies). Table 1 summarizes the responses for 2010.

 average

The weighted pollinating fee average for just over 45,000 colony rentals for 2010 was $78.40. This is a 22% increase from the
previous year ($14.00 over 2009 weighted average of $64.40). The overall average pollinating fee for the 3 survey years 2008-2010 is
represented graphically in Figure 1. In 2010 the 25 responding beekeepers reported managing 21,640 colonies for which they reported
45,023 rentals (2.1 rentals/colony). These rentals generated over $3 ½ million ($3,532,501) gross pollination income.

The change in average rental price for 12 commodities for which numbers were gathered in last 2 survey years is shown in the
last column of Table 1. An increase in average rental prices were noted for 8 commodities ranging from $0.65 (cucumber) to $54.90
(almonds) and a decrease for 4 crops (blueberry, melons, squash and strawberries - the last 2 commodities involving a small number of
colony rentals -163 and 81 respectively). Weighted average and number of colonies rented for 4 fruit crops is shown in Figure 2 and for
4 cucurbit crops in Figure 3 for the past 3 survey years.
National Honey Report – Vol. XXXI - #1 Page 11 February 15, 2011

Four commodities demonstrated a dramatic increase in rental price (apples, almonds, pumpkins and watermelons) and two had
dramatically lower average rental price (strawberries and squash). In apples (for which 19 of 25 total individuals reported rental activity),
average gain was $14.90 over previous year (apple pollination was well represented both years in survey responses). Almonds, with only
2 individuals supplying data, an even larger gain of $54.90 in average rental fee occurred. In the case of the 2 cucurbits, pumpkin, due to
one outlier in PA who rented >73 % of total colonies at highest price ($90), a $18.00 average gain was realized from the previous year.
Subtracting this outlier, the remaining 12 renters (402 col) had a weighted average of $56.35 which was $5.35 below previous year;
watermelon had a $5.10 average increase, though colony numbers were below 25% of previous survey year.
One of the 4 crops reporting a lower rental income average was strawberry. In 2010, 10 individuals rented 81 colonies (over
50% fewer than reported for the previous year) with a weighted average ($58.45) that was $8.35 less than the previous year. In squash the
decrease for 163 rental units was $4.30. Caution is advised in comparison of one year with another as data may not be an actual reflection
of an increase, merely a different pool of respondents and numbers of colonies. For some commodities, the numbers of individuals and/or
colonies rented is not robust.
The largest number of individuals (19 of 25) reported apple orchard rental in 2010, followed by blueberry (14). Ten individuals
rented colonies to strawberry growers, but only used 81 colonies. Melon and pumpkin growers were the most popular cucurbit rentals,
followed by cucumbers. Only 270 watermelon rentals were reported this past year – nearly 700 and over 1200 were included in the data
for the earlier 2 survey years but weighted average rental price ($67.00) was up in 2010. New in the report this year are rentals for
growers of truck crops (tomato, eggplant, cucurbits, beans and peppers). In 2 states, 25 colonies were rented to such growers at $63.20
weighted average rental price.
More states are represented in the pollination rentals this year compared to last and more colony numbers (12,477 in 2009 survey
vs 21,640 this year) and more than double the rentals (21,745 rentals in 2009 vs 45,023 this year).
There is a wide range in the number of colonies rented per growing area (expressed in Table 1 in acres). Some returned surveys
did not indicate the acreage pollinated, just numbers of colonies. Not knowing the acreage might indicate a lack of communication
between beekeeper and grower or it may simply reflect inadequate records at the time of completing the survey. The range of prices for
pollination was been quite broad all 3 years of the survey. Price differences per crop (in the major rental crops nearly 2 fold) may reflect
past practices, level of competition or uneven business skills of the beekeepers.
In 2009 survey, 2 individuals reporting almond rental ($75.80 average/colony) and this single crop represented 11.4 % of
eastern beekeeper income. In this survey, still with 2 individuals reporting almond rentals, the average rental price jumped to
$130.70/colony and total rental income represents 29.4% of eastern beekeeper pollination income (see table 2). Fruit rentals, as reported
last year, continues to lag in rental price value (10% of rentals but generating only 7% of total fee), although the average rental price is
considerably elevated over last year(~$15.00); almond rental is most beneficial (18% of rentals but generating nearly 30% of rental fee),
even with only 2 individuals represented in the survey. Blueberry rental replaced cucurbit rentals this year as second most common rental
and % value.

Comparison to West coast – PNW Survey
National Honey Report – Vol. XXXI - #1 Page 12 February 15, 2011

This represents the 3rd year of collecting data for eastern beekeepers. Mike Burgett has been doing a survey of OR and WA
(Pacific Northwest – PNW) beekeepers who rented colonies for the past 25 years. In the 2010 survey (n=18 commercial beekeepers), he
reported a 21% drop in the average weighted rental fee ($70.85(, a drop of $29.05 from $89.90 average the year before), the most
significant drop in the 25 year history of this survey. (Burgett, M. 2011. National Honey Report – Vol. XXX - #12. Jan: pgs 12-18.)
With the equally dramatic 22% increase of the weighted average of eastern beekeepers ( to $78.80), eastern beekeepers now are reporting
a higher rental average than Pacific Northwest beekeepers.
Almonds, responsible for 27% of all rentals and 52% of all rental income in the 2010 PNW survey were cited as largely
responsible for the drop in average rental price. For western beekeepers rental income in almonds decreased 8.7%,(average fee drop from
$150 to $137.20 compared to the previous year). For eastern beekeepers, this one crop rental [with only 2 individuals reporting rental
information] represents 29% of total gross income. The fee reported by the 2 eastern beekeepers sending bees to CA for almonds
($130.70) was very close to the fee reported by PNW beekeepers ($137.20) in the two 2010 surveys. Both surveys reported 2.1 average
annual rentals per colony.
Caution is advised in comparisons of one year or one region to another. Prices reflect only those individuals who elected to
participate in this survey. With increasingly robust numbers, I am however confident that rentals and fee for pollination rental services
reported here are representative of the mid-Atlantic region beekeepers of the Eastern U.S.
Sincere thanks to participating beekeepers for their interest and taking time to complete a survey. Also thanks to Dr. Ramesh
Sagili, OR State Univ, with survey assistance and Dr. Michael Burgett for sharing his PNW survey results.
