Happy Twittering! 3 “What Are You Doing?” Why people are using Twitter to communicate. Liz Tomey http://twitter.com/liztomey I personally use Twitter as another medium to get my marketing messages out. You just have to use it with a little bit of a spin. Here's what I mean... I send emails out to my list to get my message out, I post videos to promote my sites, I write articles to promote my sites, and on and on. Those are all mediums to get my message out. So is what I do with Twitter instead of "pushing" my message I make it more like I'm sending a message to a friend. Let's say I just launched a product. Instead of saying hey blah blah blah just launched, I'll post a Twitter message that says something like: "Wow! I can't believe the responses to my newest product blah blah blah. Check this out LINK" or "Just got done writing one of my best reports about blah blah blah... Check this out LINK" When using Twitter my goal is not to come off as marketing something, but simply sharing great information, or cool news. I would suggest anyone using twitter do the following... 1. Start following your favorite people. You'll start getting people following you. 2. Always act like you have a million people following you but you're speaking to them as if they are one person 3. Make regular tweets pointing them to killer information that promotes you or your products/services That's really the exact thing I've done to have great success with Twitter! 4 “What Are You Doing?” Why people are using Twitter to communicate. Oh, and I gotta mention... 4. Don't spend too much time on Twitter. It can be a time vampire, so limit yourself to say 15 minutes a day and no more! 5 “What Are You Doing?” Why people are using Twitter to communicate. Garrie Wilson http://twitter.com/garrie One thing about me is - I'm LAZY. So anything that frees up more of my time to do whatever I'd rather be doing, or nothing at all if I don't feel like it, is a winner in my book. That's the kind of thing you bet I'm gonna use. Twitter is one of those tools. Could there be a simpler more efficient way to keep in touch with family and friends -without needing to email or talk to them individually? If you find one, let me know. And it's great for building business relationships. I like how it lets business associates (or potential biz associates) really get to know me. Since Twittering is so informal, a cool side-effect is how totally personable it is. Isn't the 'net all about communication? That's what Twitter is all about. Communicating. In "real-time". But without the annoyances of instant messaging apps. Short informative posts. You post something quickly. BAM. It's out there. Often with near instant feedback. That kind of speed and instantaneous nature is something traditional blogging just can't come close to. Efficient. Streamlined. Perfect for a lazy person. LOL. And if you play by the rules, Twittering generates traffic. But you've got to play by the rules... If you're only there to spam links all over the place, people know it. It's obvious. And counter-productive. Because if that's what you're all about, the Twitter community won't bother to follow you OR your links. For decent traffic you need to build a following. It's a viral thing. People follow who others follow. So if you're Twittering in the spirit of things, your followers list grows. So when I've got a freebie to throw out there, all I do is mention it. Give the link. And let nature take its course. Of course the freebie might likely have backend offers or list-building goals in mind. Sometimes I'll Twitter about projects I'm working on. Anticipation-building is also good for list-building. Other times I'll Twitter to announce a new site or product. And 6 “What Are You Doing?” Why people are using Twitter to communicate. since people have gotten to know me, and hopefully trust me, the traffic just naturally follows. Not to mention how other services interface with it. For example, Every article I post to EzineArticles.com also gets announced automatically to Twitter. Being able to double my exposure with zero extra work is great. Like I said.... I'm a lazy guy ;) 7 “What Are You Doing?” Why people are using Twitter to communicate. Jeff McCall http://twitter.com/jeffmccall I like Twitter because it's quick and simple to use. I can log in, take a look at what the friends I'm following are saying, and join the conversation very quickly. The 140 character limit forces me to be brief and to the point. As I say quick and simple. Twitter works for me by introducing me - brand Jeff McCall - to many more people across the internet with similar interests. It's the easiest place in the world to find people who like what I like, and are interested in the same things as me. It took me a while to 'get it' as far as what Twitter is all about. But now I do, I think it's great and I'm connecting with some fantastic new friends. The most important thing I've learned with Twitter is you shouldn't sell to people. That will label you a spammer and lose you followers. I use Twitter by being genuine about what I'm doing and what I'm about. I might mention I'm working on a report, or a new blog post, or have just uploaded a new YouTube video. This arouses curiosity from others, which tends to cause them to migrate to my blog to find out more. And that's exactly what I'm hoping my followers will do, because at my blog I can develop the relationship with them. When they get to my blog I can show them the valuable stuff I have to offer and in time maybe they'll buy something from me. Ultimately I'm after a win-win relationship for them and me. 8 “What Are You Doing?” Why people are using Twitter to communicate. Dirk Dupon http://twitter.com/dirkdupon I like Twitter because it is a fantastic tool to instantly communicate with people who have shown an interest in your business. I also use Twitter to quickly setup joint ventures with other business owners, and for building a list. Here’s what I do… When people follow me, I send them a direct welcome message that goes out via the Tweetlater service, inviting them to a special page where they can download a collection of Twitter Ebooks with resell rights. There they can sign up for the Ebook collection, and this way, I build an opt-in list on autopilot, 24/7, without doing any work… and I’m also making some extra money at the back end. (I have created a demo video that explains how it works at YouTube.) Twitter is also a numbers game. The more followers someone has, the more likely that one of their messages will be retweeted. But of course, your tweets will only be re-tweeted when you have something useful to say or share... so be sure to only tweet quality advice and tips. A quick way to get many Twitter followers is to follow people that you find interesting, or share a common passion with. Once you start following these people, most of them will follow you back if they see that you also have an interest in something that they already like or do. I would also recommend you to have an appealing background for your Twitter page. Include a picture of yourself and a link to your blog or website on your Twitter background so other people can find out more about you. If you need a new background, you can download some free ones at: http://tweetbacks.com Another tool that will grow your group of followers is the "Viral Tweet Generator". This script lets people send out a tweet about a site or product that you want to promote with a simple mouse click, and then takes them to a special download page where they can get a free gift from your own site. You can get a FREE copy of the Viral Tweet Generator script from here: http://www.instantinfoprofit.com/viraltweetgenerator This will give you a quick start. Good luck! 9 “What Are You Doing?” Why people are using Twitter to communicate. Sally Shields http://twitter.com/sallyshields If you’re an author, speaker, coach or consultant, it’s likely you know how important it is to market your products and services. The challenge for many professionals is not only what to do, but how to do it. Additionally, knowing what is a wise investment in their marketing and what is not. Take authors. Countless numbers of authors have the dream of selling lots of books, becoming well known (and even reaching celebrity status), and making their fortune through their craft. Yet, most will not succeed due to lack of how to develop and implement an effective publicity plan. It takes more, much more, than a well-written manuscript to succeed as an author, at least if you want to make money through your writing. You Have To Gain Visibility Successful authors understand how essential it is to gain visibility within their market; visibility that equates to more readers, more book sales, more market reach; and ultimately more revenue. One of the most common beliefs uninformed authors have of how to gain market visibility is through paid advertising. The fact is, most book advertising does not work. Besides, most authors don’t have huge budgets for paid advertising campaigns. Yet, many waste untold amounts of money on ad campaigns that don’t get them a result that justifies the expense of paid advertising. Still others do nothing at all to gain visibility and promote their books. Why Readers Buy Your Books The majority of readers buy books based on word of mouth advertising; the title of a book and if they feel like they know the author. But many authors either don’t know where to begin or are afraid of rejection, so do nothing to promote themselves. The amazing thing is that a lot of publicity is free. In many cases all it takes to gain thousands, tens of thousands and even hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of FREE publicity is a commitment and a very focused plan. 10 “What Are You Doing?” Why people are using Twitter to communicate. Twitter is that tool. It’s viral, it’s vibrant, it’s fast, it’s infectious, it’s incredible. I more than quadrupled my subscriber list within 1 month of being on Twitter. Start tweeting, start thriving. 11 “What Are You Doing?” Why people are using Twitter to communicate. David Leeys http://twitter.com/davidleeys Twitter is becoming more and more popular and more corporations are using it to market their business and even brand themself. I tried it a while back and found it a really cool social messaging utility for staying connected in real-time. I tweet almost everyday about my work, goals, plans and even my personal life. It’s good to include some of your personality in your tweets, as people will get to know you better and build up a better relationship. If you do not tweet about your personal life, you are missing a lot, as Twitter is a social site to build up that rapport. Since the day I started tweeting, I have received more Google Alerts than before, about a 10% increase! If you blog, you can link up Tweetfeed with your blog. It will automatically post an announcement when you do a blog post and this will also increase your blog traffic! Get an account now. You’ll be glad you did! 12 “What Are You Doing?” Why people are using Twitter to communicate. Anne Gogh http://twitter.com/annegogh The usual social network is a cup of tea with a few friends. Twitter is a mug of espresso in a coffee shop with all the seats filled. All I have to do is lean over my booth and an instant connection is made with other tweeple. I try to be helpful, provide resources I run across, tweet about design and layout tips, share something I think is too amusing to keep to myself, direct message people who need encouragement or prayers. In other words, in the espresso bar of Twitter, I try to keep my hand extended with a plate of sugar cookies. My Twitter page is custom designed with samples of my work, and my business link is in my profile, so I very sparingly send tweets with links to my site. The customers who have come via Twitter are generous in recommending me to others. I think you just need to be helpful and generous with your knowledge, while letting your personality shine through. (Well, assuming you have a pleasant personality, of course, and one would hope so.) Jump in, grab a booth, pour a cup of tweets that benefit others and it will always come back to you. Twitter tip: It's easy to miss someone directly addressing you. Check the @Replies link to see if you need to respond to someone. 13 “What Are You Doing?” Why people are using Twitter to communicate. Marc Plancke http://twitter.com/marcplancke I first clicked on a Twitter URL in an updating message from Michael Fortin but really started using it daily after http://www.twitter.com/lookielookies gift of a Twitter infopack. I so much like Twitter for its brevity: I’m not a fan of longwinded explanations! Twitter for me is like applying the famous motto of the French poet and critic Nicolas Boileau (1636-1711): “Ce qui se conçoit bien, s’exprime clairement et les mots pour le faire, arrivent aisément”. Twitter lets me write short messages to the followers, I accepted: I do not accept everybody, but after somebody asks to follow me, I visit the URL they gave me and then decide to accept or reject them. In practice this means I only accept marketers i.e. people with whom I’ll be able to exchange opinions. Besides this group, I also accept other users when I discover their work, like e.g. the great info providers at http://mashable.com in English and in French. I really did not think of Twitter as a traffic generator when I started twittering, but saw it as a very convenient mini blog platform. Following the people I like, is made so easy through the constantly updating TwitterFox software, sitting unobtrusively in the right corner of my status bar. 14 “What Are You Doing?” Why people are using Twitter to communicate. Linda Hampton http://twitter.com/lindahampton Twitter is a great way to connect with other people like you and some that are not so like you. But the main goal is to build a relationship with other individuals that tweet. I would not have had an opportunity to meet some of the people I've met on Twitter had it not been for this social networking phenomenon. . One of the things I like most about twitter is the willingness of others to help you when you have a question. It allows high level and very experienced internet marketers to help you on your business journey. I found that I have a lot in common with people that I had not considered a part of my like minded inner circle of acquaintances. This entire process has allowed me to drive traffic to my blog and website by building relationships and allowing my followers to see me as I really am. I tweet and respond to the needs of my followers and help them when I can and I ask for help. People love to help others. It has allowed me to develop business joint ventures with others who I had not met before my Twitter experience. I have joined affiliate links as well as an opportunity to use blog talk radio. Finally, I have purchased products and services from people I have met on Twitter using the “know, like and trust” process. My main tip is to be real, tweet with others and enjoy the experience. If you're not twitting you’re not building relationships. 15 “What Are You Doing?” Why people are using Twitter to communicate. Lee McCoy http://twitter.com/caldirect I wanted to briefly explain how Twitter has impacted on my business. I think I should explain that I am an Internet Marketer who specialises in Affiliate Marketing and free traffic methods. So as you can imagine Twitter is just my sort of thing. The main reason I open my Twitter account was a tip I received from Frank Kern. I’m a member of Frank’s Mass Control group, and Frank made the point one day. Email is now so overused, the effects of email marketing are on the decline. Frank suggested that in order to have a business with longevity we should seek out new ways of communicating with prospects. His number one suggestion for this was Twitter. Frank Kern is a marketing genius and if he recommends something you had better listen. So I opened my Twitter account and started building up my list of followers. One of the first things I did was to welcome each new follower with a short thank you message and an offer for a gift. The gift was a free report you could obtain through one of my squeeze pages. Needless to say I had an immediately noticeable spike in my subscriber rates, that will defiantly work for you if you’re building an opt-in list. During my first couple of weeks I concentrated on just building up my followers and not marketing a great deal. Once I had hit a level I felt was worth experimenting with, I emailed out a short promotion. More of a teaser than anything. This resulted in another traffic spike and a sales conversion slightly lower than I have previously experienced with similar email promotions. The bottom line is Twitter is a free marketing tool that WILL BRING TRAFFIC if you’re not using it, you’re crazy! 16 “What Are You Doing?” Why people are using Twitter to communicate. Darren Monroe http://twitter.com/darrenmonroe 4 Creative Ways To Build a personable Following First if you like chat, you will like Twitter. Twitter in short is a micro blogger. But more importantly than a blog there’s a chance for you to gain a wealth of knowledge. Like all social medias there is a Twitter etiquette. 1. Be Creative: the top twitterers: (besides the celebrities) have built followings based on their original personalities and creativity. Design your own (or have someone help you) Twitter background, customize your colors etc. 2. Create a living breathing online presence: someone who is going to be taken seriously with authority and followed. Respond to everyone, as your group grows show them that you have not a website but web PRESENCE. 3. Build Relationships not a business: You do that by doing the opposite of what others are doing. i.e. not sending your first message asking someone to visit your website. In fact I have a funny little message that says "Hi! I guess I should offer you a link to make money online. Nah, let’s just tweet around and see what happens :)" The idea is that I know there are a LOT of people sending automated messages promoting their business, but I have let them know I am interested in connecting with them. NOT selling them something. And we can get to the sell later 4. LEARN and SHARE: Befriend marketing experts on Twitter and follow their tweets. Befriend whoever you would like knowledge from in general and follow their tweets. Very important that you give, learn, and share. 17 “What Are You Doing?” Why people are using Twitter to communicate. Sue Scarborough http://twitter.com/websitedesigns I first found out about Twitter on May 21st and instantly thought it was something that I could do – you see I have been way too busy to look into blogging. But the moment that I saw Twitter I instantly understood that it was like blogging but in bite sized chunks so I tried it out. All I had to do was write a paragraph of text so decided to write about my clients’ new websites as they were released, I say what their website is about and include a link to the clients’ website; this helps to drive traffic to their site! I also encourage clients to twitter about their sites too! Whenever I chat about tips and tricks that they can do to their websites and new releases, I always make sure that the URL is in the last post for the day as this is the one that will stay up for the longest. I tested Twitter to drive more business – I spoke about a service that we provide, I put the URL in the last post, I didn’t have to wait long – the next morning an email enquiring about that particular service, an hour later another email, then another so by the end of the day I had 4 emails. Doesn’t sound like much I know but out of those 4 I got a new client, instantly earning me money and what did it cost me? Just 5 min. work to write 4 posts leaving the URL at no cost to me! Now this can be done over and over again, you don’t even have to come up with new ideas just repeat this every so often so that it’s not obvious I do 1 per month now, it is free just takes 5 min. of my time and my business grows! 18 “What Are You Doing?” Why people are using Twitter to communicate. Peter R Casey http://twitter.com/peter_r_casey I had several reservations about joining Twitter: one more user name/password to remember, another social media site to update, and only 140 characters to speak my mind. Boy, was I shortsighted. In only 1.5 months of utilizing the service, Twitter has already yielded a large return on my investment of time and energy: 9% of blog's traffic is now directed from Twitter. I have created 5 business relationships for my blog and have been asked to contribute to 3 other reputable blogs; most importantly, I learn new things everyday about the power and potential of social media! 19 “What Are You Doing?” Why people are using Twitter to communicate. RJ Peters http://twitter.com/drbert I wish Twitter had been around when I started my first online business more than 10 years ago. I've never "grown a group" of like-minded friends this fast before. The power of Twitter is, as everyone already knows, a true phenomenon. Also known as "micro-blogging," because you're only allowed to leave messages no longer than 140 characters, it actually makes for some very fast communications, which can result in growing a network of contacts very quickly. Because "posts," known as Tweets, are so short, it eliminates the intimidation many people experience when they feel required to write something. How hard is it to come up with 10 words... more or less? This is less like writing posts and articles and more like leaving notes on the refrigerator. Being on Twitter is also a lot like having a list. While you still don't want to spam people with unsolicited sales copy (which would make your followers UN-follow you), you can very easily and simply let others know about events and new products. You can also ask for advice. And of course, just reading others' tweets will clue you in to what's going on in any niche within your network of followers and those you are following. All this, in one place. And it's a quick read. To know more, most tweets contain links to web sites and blogs if you want details. Before I had a Twitter account, finding people in my niche took a lot longer, because I had to go find them. Keyword research, forum searches, blog searches, tentative and gradual approaches to prevent looking like a spammer... Now they actually find ME. Want to follow me? OK... now we're friends. That was fast! And now we can share links in our niche and maybe hook up for a project. Very cool. 20 “What Are You Doing?” Why people are using Twitter to communicate. Daiv Rawks http://twitter.com/DaivRawks Twitter is such an amazing tool with so many applications - I can barely list them all in the 300 words allocated to me. I use Twitter to find people who are talking about what I’m interested in: copywriting, marketing, programming and so on. Then I follow these people and learn from them. We carry on meaningful conversations, and make genuine connections. Additionally, I use Twitter as a sounding board for new ideas. I ask questions such as “What problems do you have with Twitter? What would you like to be able to do, but are having a hard time?” and I get a flood of opportunities every time. I use these questions and my answers as food for my course on Using Twitter at http://UsingTwitter.com . I, too, have been able to get instant advice on a wide variety of topics from changing my ringtones on my BlackBerry to picking a good Blogging tool – just by asking a simple question, or sometimes even mentioning my current pain. It’s amazing how great everyone is to one another on Twitter I’ve found people to help provide valuable gifts to my customers in exchange for an opportunity to present a sample of their products and services – My people benefit from good stuff, and they benefit from increased exposure. Last, but certainly not least, I use Twitter as a means of driving traffic to my videos and my blog. By tweeting catchy headlines in my tweets, I attract people to my other works and get them addicted to my style and value in helping them jumpstart their Internet marketing for their business. 21 “What Are You Doing?” Why people are using Twitter to communicate. Peter Dykes http://twitter.com/onmysites Twitter is a free service that lets you keep in touch with people through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to one simple question: What are you doing? Twitter is always on, always looked at and is a service for friends, family, and co– workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to one simple question... it's like having an office team available 24 hours a day, without having to sit through unproductive meetings. Twitter during the day is like being in a café among your friends, working in the ‘third space’ but occasionally distracted, taking part in conversations, making observations but free at any time to drop back into a work mode. This attendee broadcasts an off-hand "tweet" (Twitter comment) to his or her "followers" (Twitter friends). With Twitter, that comment may be seen by 10, 100, 1000, or more followers. Even seemingly inocuous comments, when put before a large group of people, can be analyzed more rapidly, and in more depth, than you might expect. Friends near or far can use Twitter to remain somewhat close while far away. Tweets knit together the fabrics of online and offline existence, seamlessly crossing from website and laptop to iPhone and mobile, constantly offering a way to engage with online friends and to make the real virtual – a quick text, a short tweet, an aside in Twhirl or Twittervision. According to the official Twitter FAQ, "Twitter is a community of friends and strangers from around the world sending updates about moments in their lives... what are you doing ?” 22 “What Are You Doing?” Why people are using Twitter to communicate. Chuck Bartok http://twitter.com/cjbart I am a relative newcomer to the Internet, but have spent 5 Decades utilizing Social Networking principles in building my Businesses. When I was introduced to the Powerful Social Network Tool Twitter, I knew I found a winner. All successful businesses are built with people and Twitter allows anyone the Opportunity to meet like minded people easily. My best story is this history… - I posted an update of a Squidoo Lens in my favorite Niche, Horses - A Twitter follower went to the Squidoo Lens, shared the info with a relative in Florida moving to my area - I was contacted, we just met and a substantial 6 Figure Contract will be generated this month… What are You Doing? You should be Twittering! 23 “What Are You Doing?” Why people are using Twitter to communicate. Ross Carrel http://twitter.com/rosscarrel Twitter is a fantastic networking tool. Within two weeks of use, I’ve met in person Donna Fox, author of “From Credit Repair to Credit Millionaire” and well known marketing expert. I’ve been able to keep in touch with my mentors, and enter into their network level faster. I’ve also met aspiring business owners shared tips and strategies, and formed a local mastermind group. In short, Twitter allows you to create connections on new social levels at a blinding speed. I have done this by making an effort to follow new people and respond to interesting discussions. One way to ensure you DO NOT get these benefits from Twitter is using it as a broadcast service. My most frequent reason for unfollowing is when they’ve gone out of their way to remove the personalization. There are tools that automatically post to Twitter every time you make a new blog post. Often these people never offer anything else to the discussion. Ideally, you want it to be the opposite. You want to be personal in Twitter, and let that auto-update on your blog. Let people find your blog or website from your profile link. When you are making connections they will click your profile link, trust me! When you interact, they will eventually ask you what you’re working on. You can let your links come out naturally and the result is much more powerful. 24 “What Are You Doing?” Why people are using Twitter to communicate. Alexandra Armeanca http://twitter.com/Alexandra_A I started using Twitter as an experiment; I wasn’t very up-to-date with social media, so I thought I’d begin with a Facebook account and Twitter. Now I’m addicted to it and why shouldn’t I? You find news, articles and lots of professionals you can meet and interact with, challenge to debates. Twitter helped me get in touch with many intelligent people, who share their experience online. Transparency is very important to me, so if I write a blog post and “advertise” it on Twitter I’m honest about it. And my advice to you is to do the same. The easiest way to get followed on Twitter is to - reply to someone’s post (shared by @thebrandbuilder) - interact with other people; build relationships - tweet at least once a day 25 “What Are You Doing?” Why people are using Twitter to communicate. Bruce Symons http://twitter.com/BruceSymons I have been using Twitter for quite a while. At first I didn't have much luck with it, but then some others started following me and it all began clicking. I have connected with many interesting people and in turn have made some friends. All the news you will ever need is on Twitter. Since it is such a friendly atmosphere you feel good meeting and talking to everyone. I get about 200 hits to my sites a month fron Twitter folks alone. I can learn about anything new first before it even hits the rest of the net. The best way I get traffic from Twitter is keep active and have your blog posts automatically posted. Just be yourself and give quality information and Twitter will improve your life. 26 “What Are You Doing?” Why people are using Twitter to communicate. Lynda Hill http://twitter.com/acmeinfo I started using Twitter just before Christmas 2008. I think I read some guru somewhere saying it was the place to be - so off I went. Soon after I received a link from someone to Mr Tweet. If I followed him I would get access to hundreds of people to follow. I only had to wait a while before the links came through. Then I saw some more info about how I could get more, so I worked that process - and ended up within days with over 300 followers. This was beginning to look rather exciting (I'm British - we don't over-hype stuff!). Then I came across yet another means of getting loads of followers, but this time I decided to experiment by putting up another Tweet account. Lo and behold (it was Christmas) that account within 3 days reached 200+ followers. Just shows you don't have to hang around waiting - go and get them! So how do I use Twitter? My two main blogs have 'Tweet My Blog' installed which sends a tweet every time I post something. I also manually tweet bits and pieces, but I must confess I've been trying to get people to buy stuff most of the time. I also use BudURL (free) to shorten all my URLs which is great (and essential) for tracking purposes. When I shrink a URL I can Tweet it at the same time and can see where my traffic comes from. Does Twitter work? Well, I'm certainly getting the click throughs. As soon as I Tweet I can see the 'score' go up in BudURL - 86 one day. But so far there's no income from Tweeting. But then I guess the better philosophy is to give more; so that's what I'm doing. Lots of free stuff. It's fun too! 27 “What Are You Doing?” Why people are using Twitter to communicate. Serena Carcasole http://twitter.com/vbsondemand I use Twitter to build an online presence, better SEO, more traffic to my site, to market my business services and most of all to make a great network of friends that I can build business strategies from. Twitter helps me to generate traffic to my website and I obtain great resources from mentors, prospects, internet marketers, coaches etc. It's like free coaching from many skilled and knowledgeable people. I give away free advice, useful tips and resources which helps me gain credibility and traffic to my website. When you are too busy to tweet use www.tweetlater.com. You can create posts for the day and not even have to be there. Be sure to tweet several times a day to generate worthwhile exposure or it will not be very useful to you. 28 “What Are You Doing?” Why people are using Twitter to communicate.
