U0001.0    DEMONSTRATE SAFE WORKING PRACTICES AND PROCEDURES

           Demonstrate safe working practices and procedures by identifying, interpreting
           and complying with safety directives; selecting, wearing, adjusting using and
           maintaining personal protective devices and apparel; practising good
           housekeeping; identifying, selecting, handling, transporting, storing, using,
           reclaiming, recycling or disposing of hazardous materials; following and
           practising fire-safety procedures; identifying and confining worksite status;
           working within safe physical limits and applying correct body mechanics;
           applying lockout and tag procedures and de-energising procedures; performing
           elevating procedures; and applying basic first aid.


U0001.01   Identify, interpret and comply with safety directives provided in legislation and
           regulations including the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), Workers’
           Compensation Act (WCA), the Environmental Protection Act (EPA), the
           Dangerous Goods Transportation Act (DGTA), the Workplace Hazardous
           Materials Information System (WI-IMIS), the Ontario Fire Code (OFC), the
           Canadian Electrical Code (CEC), and the Boilers and Pressure Vessels Act
           (BPVA), on construction, industrial, commercial and residential sites.

U0001.02   Select, wear, adjust, use and maintain correctly fitting personal protective devices
           and apparel including safety and rubber boots, hard hats, gloves, glasses, goggles,
           masks, face shields, coveralls, safety harness, respirators, and car protectors/plugs,
           for specific job related tasks, in accordance with manufacturers’ instructions, and
           as required by the OHSA and company policies and procedures.

U0001.03   Practice good housekeeping by ensuring the workplace is clean, organised, free of
           obstructions, the location of first aid equipment and supplies is identified, that
           materials and equipment are cleaned and stored in designated areas after use,
           protective barriers and guards are erected to ensure safety of self and others, in
           accordance with the OHSA and company policy and procedures.

U0001.04   Identify, select, handle, transport, store/secure, use, reclaim, recycle or dispose of
           unsafe hazardous/toxic materials, including gases, acids, solvents, and cleaners, to
           effectively protect self, others, property and the environment, in accordance with
           WHMIS, the OHSA, the EPA, the DGTA, manufacturers’ instructions and
           company procedures and policy.

U0001.05   Follow and practice fire-safety procedures including determining the potential for
           fire associated to the work being performed, identifying the location of and
           assessing severity of a fire, taking action to suppress a minor fire by selecting and
           operating the appropriate fire extinguishing equipment for a specific fire type,
           activating alarms, recognising and responding to audio-visual alarms and

           following the prescribed fire evacuation plan, to effectively protect self, others
           and property, in accordance with the OFC, company directives and procedures.

U0001.06   Identify and confirm worksite status including adequate lighting and ventilation,
           particularly in confined space, the presence of hazardous conditions and unsafe
           equipment and materials which may cause, or cause, accidents to bystanders or
           co-workers, reporting such conditions to designated supervisory personnel, in
           accordance with the OHSA, manufacturers’ instructions and company policy and
           procedures.

U0001.07   Work within safe physical limits and apply correct body mechanics when bending,
           lifting, transporting or climbing with heavy loads, to minimise personal injury, in
           accordance with the OHSA, the CSA manufacturers’ instructions and company
           procedures and policies.

U0001.08   Apply lockout and tag procedures and de-energising procedures to electrical,
           mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic equipment prior to commencing
           maintenance and overhaul, to protect self and others, in accordance with the CEC,
           the BPVA, the OHSA, manufacturers’ instructions and company policies and
           procedures.

U0001.09   Perform elevating procedures by selecting, erecting, assembling, operating and
           storing elevating devices including ladders, scaffold, work platforms, swing
           stages, hoists, overhead cranes, black and tackle, and/or chain fails and material
           handling equipment such as lift pins, eye bolts, slings, cables and chains, by
           wearing correct safety equipment and following the prescribed hoisting
           procedures, to lift and position items and materials, in accordance with the OHSA,
           manufacturers’ specifications and instructions, and company policies and
           procedures.

U0001.10   Apply basic first aid to self or others to treat various conditions including sudden
           illness, burns, cuts, sprains, broken bones, bleeding, wounds, chemical inhalation
           and contamination of the eyes, by using methods and equipment including
           artificial, mouth-to-mouth and cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR), Band Aids,
           splints and saline wash, maintaining currency of skills so that the victim is
           stabilised and comfortable, until qualified medical assistance becomes available,
           in accordance with the OHSA and company practices and procedures.
