If you have a teenager at home, it is important to start to educate them on the
necessities of flossing on a daily basis. Oral health is incredibly important for every
age group, but the issue is that teenagers are often less likely to brush and floss every
day. Much of this has to do with the fact that teenagers will begin to have more
independence and less supervision, so they may omit flossing altogether. This is just
one more reason why parents should encourage their teenagers to floss regularly to
protect their oral health.

Teenagers have recently grown in their permanent teeth, and many may have their
wisdom teeth coming in. These new teeth that have come in are very vulnerable to
bacteria and infection, which can cause decay, which is why flossing and brushing
every single day is so vital. Many times, teenagers have erratic schedules. Teenagers
also begin to make their own choices in their food and nutrition, so they may eat at
irregular times within the day. When this happens, a teenager will probably stop
flossing and brushing because they don't stick to a regular schedule.

Even though your teenager may be resistant to you telling them to floss and brush
every day, it is still vital for them to understand that this will protect the health of their
teeth and gums. The teenage growing years are very formative, which is why the adult
teeth must be protected. You can make this easier by asking your teenager which floss
they would prefer to use on a daily basis. If you let them pick out the floss that they
would like to use, whether it is electric floss or a flossing toothpick, this will make it
easier for them to start flossing every time that they brush.

It is highly common for teenagers to neglect their oral care and stop flossing and
brushing every day. Of course, it is difficult to be a parent supervising your teenager
when it comes to brushing and flossing, but you can emphasize the importance of
flossing to them since it will prevent the buildup of bacteria in their mouth. Talk to
your teenager about the best time for flossing, whether they would prefer it right
before bed or when they leave for school, so that they are more likely to floss. This
will help your teenager to understand the importance of healthy oral care habits so
that they can start flossing on a daily basis to prevent the spread of bacteria and
cavities.

This is a task that you can focus on as a family to create solid routines to protect the
hygiene of your children. When your teenager understands the importance of oral
hygiene, they can look forward to a healthy smile well into the future!
