About the GGSN Service Manager
The GGSN Service Manager (GGSN SM) is a tool for managing the configuration of the Cisco Gateway
GPRS Support Node (GGSN). The tool components provided in this release are the:
              • Inventory Manager— see Using the Inventory Function, page 4-1
              • The Service Manager— see Using the Service Manager Function, page 5-1
              • The Troubleshooting Engine—see Using the Tools Function, page 6-1

How the GGSN Service Manager Works With Devices
Devices must have some basic connectivity for CiscoWorks to access them, including:
              • An IP address
              • SNMP community strings
              • User IDs and passwords
Connectivity is a prerequisite to discovering the devices in Resource Manager Essentials (RME), and to
the way the GGSN SM works with them.

User Guide for Cisco GGSN Service Manager

                                                                                                            Chapter 1 Overview
About the GGSN Service Manager GUI

About the GGSN Service Manager GUI
You perform activation tasks through the graphical user interface (GUI). Actions taken through the GUI
leverage the Resource Manager Essentials (RME) Netconfig utility to generate configuration command
sets. The GGSN SM then downloads those commands to the specified device group.
The GGSN SM GUI is accessible through the CiscoWorks desktop. For information about the
CiscoWorks desktop, see the CiscoWorks Common Services documentation at
                      http://www.cisco.com/en/US/partner/products/sw/cscowork/ps3996/index.html
The GGSN SM GUI employs UII conventions. Each screen has a navigation content area at the top,as in
                      the example in Figure 1-1.

                      Figure 1-1 Example Navigation Area

Most of the screen is an application content area. The table of contents (TOC) is at the left.
For more information on these conventions, see the UII example page at:

About the Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN)
The Cisco GGSN Service Manager (GGSN SM) manages the Cisco Gateway GPRS Support Node
(GGSN). The GGSN offers standard 3GPP GPRS functionalities plus Cisco internetworking capabilities
in a single Cisco router platform. The Cisco IOS software within the GGSN provides a suite of
networking capabilities aboard internetworking devices. The Cisco GGSN and data network components
interoperate with external packet-data networks. The GGSN is connected to the Serving GPRS Support
Nodes (SGSNs) via an IP-based GPRS backbone network. The GGSN provides IP connectivity to
mobile users of public services (Internet, WAP, and MMS) and corporate Virtual Private Networks
                      (VPNs).
The GGSN is part of the Cisco GPRS solution, which enables mobile wireless operators to provide
advanced mobile data services to network subscribers. Figure 1-2 shows the relationship of the GGSN
to the IP-based GPRS backbone network.

Description: GGSN (Gateway GPRS Support Node) is mainly from the gateway role, it can be a variety of data network connection such as ISDN, PSPDN and LAN. Some of the literature, the GGSN called GPRS router. GGSN to the GSM network in GPRS packet data protocol conversion package, which can transmit data packets to the packet to a remote TCP / IP or X.25 network.
