United States Department of the Interior NATIONAL PARK SERVICE Devils Postpile National Monument P.O. Box 3999 Mammoth Lakes, California 93546 (760) 934-2289 August 21, 2008 To: Cc: Commercial Vehicle Use and Tour Buses at Devils Postpile National Monument Jon Regelbrugge, Mammoth District Ranger, Inyo National Forest Michael Schlafmann, Mammoth Deputy District Ranger, INF Debbie Nelson, Minaret Vista Checkstation Supervisor, INF Jamie Lokan, Sales Manager, Mammoth Visitor Bureau Deanna Dulen, Park Superintendent Notification of 2009 Requirement Implementation: Tour Buses visiting Devils Postpile must submit an Application for Commercial Use Authorization. This letter is to update users that existing regulations for commercial use on National Park Service Lands require a commercial use authorization. The requirement will be implemented at Devils Postpile National Monument in field season 2009. The policy will be implemented for two (2) specific reasons: the importance of managing safe use of the narrow steep roadway, and limited amount of parking at the Monument. Businesses must apply/request a Commercial Use Authorization in order to determine if the request can be safely accommodated. Applications will be evaluated as to the timing of the visit, the size of the vehicle, and the availability of traffic control staff to manage road access. Times of high visitor use including holiday weekends generally will not allow for additional traffic on the road. Fees will be determined by the size of the vehicle, the number of vehicles, and the staff resources needed to safely accommodate the visit. During the shuttle bus operating season from mid-June to Labor Day weekend, the shuttle bus system can provide a safer visit. Shuttle bus service runs from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. This is a recommended option as the shuttle bus drivers have experience with the road and a communication system between buses. This obtain a permit application you may download a copy at http://www.nps.gov/depo/parkmgmt/index.htm or send a written request to P.O. 3999, Mammoth Lakes CA 93546. Please submit this request at least a month prior to your planning of an event you request to take place at the Monument. Thank you for your cooperation. From: Subject:
