New tour explores the African presence in early New York
New York, NY - The African Burial Ground National Monument is launching a new walking tour, “A Broader View: Exploring the African Presence in Early New York,” highlighting how free and enslaved Africans played an important role in the development of New York City. The free ranger-guided tour traverses sites in Lower Manhattan of social, political, cultural, and economic importance concerning Africans in colonial and post-colonial New York. Sites and events that may be covered include Fort Amsterdam, the Slave Market on Wall Street, slave revolts, the Underground Railroad, the African Free Schools, City Hall Park and more. When: Scheduled tours Monday, Wednesday and Friday beginning July 23 through August 31, 2007 After Labor Day, please call to schedule a tour Tour begins on the steps of Federal Hall National Memorial, located at 26 Wall Street, and end at the African Burial Ground National Monument at 290 Broadway 10:00 am – Scheduled tour for up to 15 people on a first-come, first-served basis 2:00 pm – Available tour by advance reservation only 90 minutes FREE
