Notes from the President… by Betty Lebeter

Welcome 2011. This is a busy month for our members as many new classes begin. We
are fortunate to have so many talented volunteers leading our groups, sharing their
expertise and time with us.
Our first dance of the year is Rabbie Burns Night, which is the evening our Scottish
members know what is going on and the rest of us wonder what they are saying. It is a
fun evening, so get your tickets early.
A special request to our members who like to read the newspapers. Please do not remove
them from the library, they are for all members to share and when you take them into
another room, others miss the opportunity to read them. Also, if you wish to do the
crossword puzzles, have the puzzle photocopied (25¢) and please do not do it in the
paper. This spoils it for others who may want to challenge their word power. Thank you.
Finally, I wish to thank the many members who made a donation to the Centre as a result
of our recent mailed request. This is your building, your place to play, and we appreciate
the funds given to purchase items for improving the facility and general maintenance.

Happy New Year! A new year is a great reminder of the possibility of new beginnings.
What better way to celebrate than by starting the new year with a new program or
activity? Silver Harbour has over 70 different programs and services that help you keep
fit, stimulate your mind, develop your creativity, and have fun. Our January newsletter is
full of great activities – simply find the program that suits you and your lifestyle. Although
registration started in December, most of our programs still have plenty of room for new
participants. Come join us!
In early December, we wrote to our members asking for a tax-deductible donation. We
are very grateful for the response and certainly appreciate members’ ability to support our
Centre in this way. We are fortunate to receive about 35% of our annual operating budget
in core funding grants from the City and the District of North Vancouver – but the rest
we must raise ourselves. If you are interested in making a donation in the future, we
welcome donations at any time of the year and will provide an income tax receipt as well.
If you have already made a donation, a 2010 tax receipt is on its way to you – if you do not
receive the tax receipt by January 14th, please contact us.

Free Legal Advice & Referral Clinic
North Shore lawyers are here to help you! Silver Harbour’s free Legal Advice and Referral
Clinic is staffed by qualified lawyers, volunteering to assist seniors with legal concerns and
questions. This clinic is open to all adults 55 and over living on the North Shore – you do
not need to be a member of Silver Harbour Centre to make an appointment. At the clinic,
the lawyer will offer you summary advice, information, and interpretation of documents.
If you require more extensive work, we’ll refer you to an appropriate professional from
our list.
Please sign up at the front desk for a confidential ½ hour appointment

sold, the cost of the ticket will then be refunded.
 A full refund will be given for any event which is cancelled by Silver Harbour

IMPORTANT: Please read these “Computer Course Policies”
before registering for Silver Harbour computer classes

1. Please register for the first course “Computers for Beginners” before any other course (unless
the requirement is waived by one of the principal instructors). Each course has ten places
   unless stated otherwise. 15

2. You may register for other courses at the same time. But please do not take overlapping

3. For maximum benefit, take courses in the following order: “Computers for Beginners”;
“Basic Word Processing”; then preferably “Email and Internet” and “Computers for
   Intermediates” before any other course.

4. Courses may be cancelled if instructors are not able to teach or if there are not enough
students registered. Your fees will be refunded for such cancellations. The course may be
   rescheduled or replaced.

5. Please attend your class regularly, unless you are sick. The first class is vitally important. We
find that once two classes are missed, it is not feasible for the student to catch up without
direct help from the instructor, and this is both disruptive to the class and unfair to the
teacher. Therefore, any student who misses two classes will not be re-admitted to the class.
Refunds will not be given unless the absences can be shown to be a direct result of serious
   illness or injury.

6. If you are going to miss a course, please notify the Centre and do not swap your place with a
friend. Others are usually waiting ahead of your friend for the same spot.

7. Five computers are available for instruction and two students will be working cooperatively
on each machine. Every week each student pair will be required to change to new partners.

8. If you cannot practice what you learned, further progress
becomes a frustrating experience for everyone. Therefore,
except for “Computers for Beginners”, you MUST have
regular access to a computer with the Windows XP operating
system with the same (or similar) software, as the ones used
in courses. The Centre cannot supply them. If you are
considering buying a new computer, it is always best to wait
until you have started your course and can ask for advice
   from the instructor.

Arts and Crafts Corner… by Linda Ramsden

Our Christmas Bazaar was a huge success! Many, many thanks are extended to everyone
who crafted, baked and shopped. You are all wonderful and deserve a really big round of
applause for your accomplishment. It was a very big undertaking and everything couldn’t
have gone more smoothly. The outcome was everything we hoped for and more. The
financial statement will be posted outside the Arts and Crafts office later this month.

Registration has started for the winter session. Most Arts and Crafts classes begin the
week of January 10. There is still space in many of the classes, including computer classes.
Please check at the front desk for more information.

Lorna is back from England and will repeat a very popular session that she
offered last year. Bring your painting questions and she’ll help you find the
answers. Lorna brings lots of cheery energy and her enthusiasm for
painting to us and will help participants explore different aspects of
painting. Bring along some of your own work if you would like a gentle
       critique or suggestions.

                          Basic Colour Theory

knowledge. Proceed with confidence once you have learned the basics of colour
mixing and how colours work together! Bring your brushes to make colour
charts to keep. Bring your own paints if you prefer. Watercolour paint and
paper will be supplied.

Roving Reporter… by Lin Ardington
Well, it was everything we expected! Another busy successful
bazaar. Hard to resist – titillating gifts lightened our wallets, as
well as a maelstrom of fun entertainment and the busy-ness of
Christmas. Gone for another year – and a well-deserved respite
for the appreciated crafters, bakers, sellers, donors, dedicated
volunteers – all already weighted down with their personal festive
Too many to mention – but none anymore deserving than the overwhelmingly popular
SH choir. Rehearsing, rehearsing, warming up. Juggling schedules and stage space around
the community – energised but staying calm no matter the audience size. Spreading their
festive joy. Drum roll please! Irene P. is the musical director; Daphne, president of the
group; Heidi the pianist, and they’re presently seeking a pianist to tickle the 88 keys and
octaves! Delaine M is also SH librarian, Joyce S the Sunshine girl, and there’s Miriam B.
Isobelle H, Helen H, Olive L, Elsie L, Reita S, Betty P, two Heidis, Florence C, Heather R,
Bea N, Bunny S, Daphne P, Marjorie W, and Dovie W (who I thank for filling in names!),
tenors Larry A, Dave R, Richard R, Bass Dick W, Denis S and Vlad B; Altos Ming and
Elizabeth, and newest soprano Diane K. To top off this remarkably delicious group,
Heidi S wrote a poem and Irene lovingly took on the challenge of setting it to music.
Bravo! All giving a fantastic impression and following in former charismatic choirmaster
Hugh McC’s steps. Music brings everyone together and on a hilarious note, reminds this
scribbler of a group she initiated some years ago – “Garter Girls”! Fuelled by a $3000
New Horizons grant – sort of a burlesque “girl” group! And keeping my fingers busy
producing that leg adornment! (to throw to the audience!!) In those days anything
remotely sexually was unspoken – as if it was a character flaw. Today tweeting and texting
is out there for everyone; then such sexy label was like my being a dog begging for mercy!
Was quickly changed to “Silver Stars”! Being brutally honest, it probably was more
becoming for us ladies!
I left you last month with a cliff hanger. Claire K and Glenys’ new passion is to open up
the subject of elder abuse. Via flattery, sob stories, playing on elders, their weakness, etc.
Happens to many. Claire and Glenys bear a warm feeling to tell us “beware”.
On a happier note – if you didn’t get any big mistletoe time last month – Valentines is
coming up! And before Toodles time – keep in mind, SH is a good place to find joy! Can
by your Eureka moment!
