15 October 1998 Bryan S. Burgin How to Authorize Lightspeed NVS Products While Lightspeed NVS is in Use
OVERVIEW: Lightspeed authorization codes, both demonstration codes and permanent codes, cannot be installed while Lightspeed is in use. This is because the codes are physically patched into the program files VSBIOS (928) and/or VSBIOSCI (SCSI). And while Lightspeed NVS is active, these program files are reserved and cannot be patched. Once you obtain a permanent, purchased code, that code is valid for all future releases. Therefore, if you are upgrading Lightspeed, you may reenter the same code you used on the previous version. These codes should be written down for future reference. To determine your permanent code, if you have permanent codes, run MENU in LS on your Lightspeed volume, select Installations and then select Authorize 928 Transport or Authorize SCSI Transport. Write down each permanent code listed. While some sessions may indicate that they are authorized for demonstration, only purchased codes will appear. Demonstration codes, however, are different. They are time sensitive, can only be used once and must be obtained while you are viewing the authorization screen. Further, you can only obtain a code from Lightspeed in the U.S. (6 a.m. – 6 p.m., PT (-8GMT)) or your international dealer during our/their normal business hours. This, unfortunately, may lie during your normal production hours while Lightspeed is in use. PROCEDURE: Follow these instructions to authorize Lightspeed while it is in use: 1) Copy the programs VSBIOS and LSINAUTH (928) and/or VSBIOSCI and LSAUTHSI (SCSI) from LS on the Lightspeed volume to a temporary location (to any other library on any volume). To do this: 1A) Run BACKUP. 1B) PRNAME = SPEED: Press ENTER to perform a normal DMS backup. 1C) PRNAME = INPUT: Enter VOLUME=, LIBRARY=LS, FILE=VSBIOS, and MOREFILE=YES. And then press ENTER. 1D) PRNAME = MOREFILE: Enter LIBRARY2=LS, FILE2=LSINAUTH, LIBRARY3=LS, FILE3=VSBIOSCI, LIBRARY4=LS, and FILE4=LSAUTHSI. And then press ENTER.
1E) PRNAME = OUTPUT: Enter a temporary library and volume in the VOLUME and LIBRARY fields. 1F) PRNAME = OPTIONS: Enter DUPFILES=PROMPT and then press Enter. 1G) PRNAME = LOGFILES: Enter OUTDEV=NO and then press ENTER. 1H) PRNAME = EOJ: Press PF16 to terminate BACKUP. 2) Run the program LSINAUTH (928) or LSAUTHSI (SCSI) in that temporary location. 3) Contact Lightspeed Software or your international dealer to obtain your code(s). If you are obtaining a permanent code, write down this code for future reference. 4) At a time convenient to you (i.e., during the next backup/maintenance cycle), copy and overlay the files in the temporary location back to the library LS on your Lightspeed volume. 5) Scratch the files in the temporary location.
