                                             ( Underactive thyroid )
                                Recommended supplements are listed below
The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located in the front of the neck that produces hormones which
stimulate vital processes in every part of the body. Any abnormality in this intricate system of hormone syn-
thesis and production can have far-reaching consequences on our health.
Thyroid disorders by definition are:
• Simple Goitre. See the Ailment page and select Hashimoto’s Disease to learn more about this.
• Hyperthyroidism. Excessive production of thyroid hormone with growth or atrophy of the thyroid gland,
increased metabolic rate, and possible bulging of the eyes ( exophthalmos ). For more info on this con-
dition, go to Ailments and select Graves Disease.
• Hypothyroidism
                                               HYPOTHYROIDISM
In the condition termed hypothyroidism, the thyroid fails to produce sufficient quantities of the hormones
that control metabolic activity in every cell of the body.
This can lead to:
• Myxedema: Low thyroid function due to atrophy or thyroid, following radioactive iodine therapy for hy-
perthyroidism or secondary to hypofunction of anterior pituitary.
• Symptoms: large tongue, slow, deep speech; thickened, dry skin; puffiness of hands, face and eyelids.
• Baldness of scalp and outer eyebrows. Mental apathy, sensitivity to cold, constipation, menstrual disor
ders, low blood pressure, weight gain and insomnia.

• Cretinism: Juvenile hypothyroidism due to a deficiency of thyroid hormone during fetal period or early
development. Causes are inborn errors of iodine metabolism, abnormally developed thyroid, enzyme
blocks in thyroid hormone production, and dietary deficiency. The thyroid may be absent, reduced in
    size or greatly enlarged.
• Symptoms: Physical and mental development is retarded. Tongue is enlarged, lips thickened, and
mouth is held open and drooling. Unbilical lesion common with pot belly.
• Apathy, constipation and sallow skin.

• Mild hypothyroidism: A wide range of symptoms is associated with this most common thyroid condi-
tion. These include being tired easily, headaches, chronic or recurrent infection, eczema, psoriasis,
acne, menstrual disorders, painful menstruation, depression, cold sensitivity, psychological problems,
    and anaemia
                                                  CAUSES
• Hashimoto’s disease and other inflammatory disorders of the thyroid
• Iodine deficiency
• Stress
• Poor diet and inactivity
• Pregnancy and hormone imbalance ( especially oestrogen/progesterone, cortisol/ DHEASurgery on or
    radiation of the thyroid
• Certain medications, most notably lithium and synthetic oestrogen
• Failure of the pituitary gland
•

• Women who have low thyroid hormones and low progesterone levels
Consume plenty of sea vegetables, such as kelp, nori, dulse, kombu and wakame.

Geranium essential oil will help regulate thyroid function, so add it to your bath, or have yourself
massaged with a carrier oil to which is added geranium.
Other oils that will help with depression and fatigue are jasmine, neroli, bergamot and rose oils.
