YesBC, in collaboration with the Capital Regional District Climate Action Program,
Climate Action West Shore and multiple community partners, is planning to host
the Greater Victoria Youth Climate Action Summit and “Off -the- Grid” Music
and Art Festival on Thursday, April 21, 2011. Our event will be powered by Energy
Alternatives www.energyalternatives.ca.

The Youth Climate Action Summit is a youth-driven, regional celebration intended
to provide schools from throughout the Capital Regional District an opportunity
to showcase their climate action successes for Earth Day 2011, share their stories,
songs, poetry and assorted works of visual art inspired by nature or representing a
healthy, happy and sustainable community.

The backdrop for the Youth Summit will be an outdoor, Off-the-Grid Music and Art
Festival, featuring student performers and emerging local talent. We are anticipating
attendance of 1,000+ at a carbon neutral event, celebrating young leaders and
promoting a cool conservation culture with music as the medium. We recognize the
power of the arts in advancing social change, and this special Earth Day celebration off the grid
                                                                                               april 21/11
for youth will have a significant community and media outreach impact.

Throughout the afternoon on Thursday, April 21st, a main stage (powered by clean,
green alternative energy) will feature great musical entertainment interspersed with
catchy Public Service Announcements promoting energy conservation, recycling,
environmental stewardship, local food and green transportation. Students will
have an opportunity to visit exhibits of fine art and craft created by students from
throughout the region, and participating schools will have an opportunity to share
their green success stories through short presentations and project exhibits at their
own ‘station’ on the site. Food and beverage services will focus on local products
which will add further depth to the sustainable living messages we want to highlight.
Additional festival exhibits will focus on green career and job futures, environmentally
friendly products and services, community green mapping, and the work of various
organizations committed to sustainable community development and environmental
conservation.

Project support has already been committed by the CRD, Sooke School District, Cities
of Langford and Colwood, West Shore Chamber of Commerce and numerous other
community partners. We will also collaborate with other environmental organizations
such as Sierra Club of BC, BC Sustainable Energy Association and the Climate Project
Canada.

Our host school, Belmont Senior Secondary on the West Shore, is an important
community of youth within a rapidly growing region, and we are delighted to have
this inaugural event hosted by the Sooke School District.

Please join us in this transformation journey to power up a positive youth
culture in celebration of Earth Day 2011.
