COLOCAP BALANCE PREPARATION - PATIENT INFORMATION.
The success of your examination depends on the bowel being as clear as possible, otherwise the examination may
need to be postponed and the preparation repeated.

NOTE: 7 DAYS BEFORE EXAMINATION STOP ALL IRON CONTAINING MEDICATIONS AND
BLOOD THINNING AGENTS INCLUDING WARFARIN, ISCOVER, ASPIRIN, ASASANTIN, PLAVIX, CARTIA, CARDIPRIN.

ONE DAY BEFORE EXAMINATION
    • Have a good, full breakfast
    • After 9am only *Approved clear fluids to be consumed.
*Approved Clear Fluids:
Water, Clear Fruit Juices (eg Apple Juice), Jelly (no red, green or purple colours),
Black tea and coffee, Bonox, Lucozade, Cordials,
(NO milk or milk products, NO solid food, NO pulp, pips or seeds)

Please note: This preparation WILL produce diarrhoea. This indicates cleaning of the bowel. You will know that your bowels are clean
when the liquid coming away from your bowel is clear, lemon-coloured fluid with no solid particles. Please remain within easy reach of
toilet facilities

Taking the capsules
You will need to take all 65 capsules

If your colonoscopy is scheduled for the MORNING
Start 3.30pm
     • Swallow the first 5 capsules. Although the capsules can be taken one at a time, they are most easily swallowed
as a handful of 5 capsules. You should “wash down” these capsules (and each lot of 5) by drinking a glass – at
least 250ml-of clear, non alcoholic liquid from the *Approved Clear Fluids list.
     • Take another 5 capsules EVERY 15 MINUTES with at least 250ml more to drink until all 65 capsules have
been taken (your last lot of 5 should be taken at 6.30pm)
     • You should continue to drink clear non-alcoholic fluids from the *Approved Clear Fluids list after completing
         the capsule preparation.
     • NO further fluids from midnight.

If your colonoscopy is scheduled for the AFTERNOON
Start 4.30pm
     • Swallow the first 5 capsules. Although the capsules can be taken one at a time, they are most easily swallowed
as a handful of 5 capsules. You should “wash down” these capsules (and each lot of 5) by drinking a glass – at
least 250ml-of clear, non alcoholic liquid from the *Approved Clear Fluids list.
     • Take another 5 capsules EVERY 15 MINUTES with at least 250ml more to drink until 45 capsules have been
taken (your last lot of 5 should be taken at 6.30pm)
     • You should continue to drink clear non-alcoholic fluids from the *Approved Clear Fluids list overnight.
On the day of your colonoscopy
At 6.30am
     • Take another 5 capsules every 15minutes with at least 250ml more to drink until the remaining 20 capsules
have been taken (your last lot of 5 should be taken at 7.30a,).
     • You should continue to drink clear non-alcoholic *Approved Clear Liquids after completing the capsule
preparation. You should have nothing further to drink from 4 hours prior to your procedure.

A vital part of this preparation is the fluid that you drink. Not only does this prevent dehydration, it forms an
important part of the bowel cleansing process. You must maintain adequate fluid intake at a rate of approximately
250ml of liquid for every 5 capsules (2.5-3 litres in all).

If you do not maintain adequate fluid intake, serious dehydration and/or electrolyte disturbances may occur in some
at risk patients.

If you are having any difficulty with the bowel preparation or if you have any questions regarding your
colonoscopy, please phone the office on 9790 0188 (Business hours).
