How to Become a Market Trader  Firstly, come and see us. Markets office staff will be happy to tell you how the markets work and give advice on becoming a trader. The first thing you must do is to decide which line you would like to sell. Your whole success may hinge on whether or not your chosen line is well represented on markets and in demand, so visit the markets first to assess competition and customer needs. Barnsley Markets currently limit traders to two lines though this may cover a host of different goods, for example: ladies wear - skirts, dresses, blouses. Libraries will be able to supply statistics on consumer spending patterns. As a first starter you will start as a casual trader. This means that you do not have a regular stall and may not get the same stall every day. On a casual trader's first visit to the market, a registration form must be filled in at the Markets Office. This will be used to record your attendance at the market. Identification showing proof of address is also required on a trader's first visit, e.g.. driving licence, along with two passport photographs. You will then be entered on the bottom of the casual list. The casual list identifies order of attendance. Casual traders missing one trading day are relegated one position. New Trader Incentive. When you are offered and accept a regular stall you will stand a four week trial period, followed by two weeks with free rent. Should you not take your full entitlement you will be allowed to trade for one or two weeks rent free. Full details of he scheme are available by contacting the Markets Office on 01226 772239 or email robertauckland@barnsley.gov.uk Stalls will be allocated from the casual list. It takes on average five weeks before you will be offered a regular stall. Once you become a regular trader you will have to sign a licence which gives you rights, obligations and responsibilities. By becoming self-employed the responsibility for payment of tax and national insurance contributions fall on you alone. You must keep records of all expenditure/income in order to complete yearly accounts. Grants and training are available through the Business Link Programme which will help on book keeping skills. Many traders choose to hire an accountant who will give advice on bookkeeping and taxation. If you are ill, but produce a sick note, you will be entitled to a 50% reduction off your retainer fees. Also providing you notify us that you will not be standing on a particular day and we can re-let your stall you will be entitled to a 20% discount off your retainer fees. In addition to the Open Markets, lock-up stalls and shops are available; please ask for information at the Markets Office. Market trading can offer a long-term opportunity of self-employment and a springboard to greater things. Many casual traders go on to become permanent traders.         Stall Fees Barnsley Wombwell Market Market 01226 01226 772239/8 752754 Monday Tuesday ---------- ---------*£11.30 **£26.60 £11.30 £26.60 £6.00 £11.50 ---------Hoyland Market 01226 743926 ---------£11.20 £11.70 £12.20 ---------*£11.20 £11.70 £12.20 ---------£11.20 £11.70 £12.20 ---------Goldthorpe Market 01709 894370 £5.20 £6.30 £7.30 £8.30 ---------Penistone Market 01226 370084 ------------------- Wednesday ---------£7.50 £8.20 £8.90 £9.70 ---------- Thursday ---------- ---------£11.30 £26.60 £11.30 £26.60 8ft Stall ---------- Friday £6.00 £11.50 £6.00 £11.50 ---------- ---------£6.30 £7.30 £8.30 ---------- Saturday Sunday ---------- (second-hand/ new) £7.30 ---------- * Second-hand market.
