About the National Wildlife Refuge System
Established in 1903 by president Theodore Roosevelt, the National Wildlife Refuge System today consists of 548 individual refuges in all states and territories, and provides unparalleled opportunities for Americans to learn about and appreciate wildlife and natural habitats. Managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service within the Department of the Interior, the Refuge System is the only federal land system dedicated first and foremost to conserving wildlife.
