How to Identify a Hero
This list of Heroic characteristics was suggested by Peter R. Stillman in Introduction to Myth.
1. Heroes often come from a mysterious or unusual background.
2. Heroes have some advantages/strengths, but they are not invincible because they have weaknesses.
3. Heroes need to make a journey or follow a goal or quest.
4. A hero’s way is not always direct or clear to him.
5. The hero’s journey is filled with dangers, loneliness, and temptations.
6. The hero has friends or guides who help him.
7. With few exceptions, mythological heroes are male.
