YOUR BEST WORK The purpose of the portfolio is to display your best work. It will be used as the final evaluation for your student teaching experience. If done well you can also use it as a recruiting tool. What is in it? You will have Personal Information such as your Resume and Philosophy of Teaching, Lesson plans that demonstrate you can plan for a variety of teaching methods, Assessments that will show that you can assess students in a variety of ways and Movies demonstrating that can teach in a variety of ways. These will be organized in your portfolio by placing this information in each of these folders: Personal, Lessons (High School and Middle School), Assessments, and Movies. Here is what should be in each of the folders: Personal Your resume. Use the one that was developed on your career day. You can always update it as time goes on. Your Personal Philosophy of Teaching. What is teaching mathematics to you? What is a philosophy of teaching statement? A philosophy of teaching statement is a narrative that includes:  your conception of teaching and learning  a description of how you teach  justification for why you teach that way Here are some links to help you: http://ftad.osu.edu/portfolio/philosophy/Philosophy.html http://www.celt.iastate.edu/teaching/philosophy.html http://www.isd.uga.edu/teaching_assistant/philosophy/2005phil/joe.htm Lessons For each of your experiences you must show that you can plan lessons that:   you can use technology you can use a variety of materials 3 2:33 PM6/12/09    by Tom Giambrone 4 you can use group learning. you can use a variety of approaches. you can construct a discovery lesson where the students are activity involved. These lesson must come from your experiences or methods course. Every outcome must be represented. In the course of the semester you will write some 70+ lesson plans. Certainly you will have no trouble with ten. Assessments Here you want you have evidence that you can assess in a variety of ways. Tests and Quizzes are one way, but have others such as rubrics and group work. Movies Here you will have three different episodes of your teaching. You want to video tape lessons that are different. In these three clips you want to show that you can teach in more than one way. Your clips will be edited down into approximately 5 minutes. In the five minutes you want to show: The beginning of the lesson where you tell the students what you are going to do that day and how you set it your opening activity. The main part of the lesson. Give the viewer a idea of what happened during the main learning activity. The end. How did the lesson conclude. DO NOT: Show 5 minutes of going over homework. Show you yelling at students!!!! 4 2:33 PM6/12/09 by Tom Giambrone 5 Creating an Electronic Portfolio. As in a website, the portfolio needs to be in one folder. You can create other folders inside this folder to organize the documents. Your Index Page Here is how yours in This links to the following organized. The Sample Lessons Page links to display each of the lessons etc. 5 2:33 PM6/12/09 by Tom Giambrone 6 What does it look like? First Step Create a Folder of Word Documents Create a folder with copies of all files you are going to use in your portfolio. You will be discarding these files in the process. Use the organization shown above and below for your portfolio. There is the sample portfolio called “your portfolio” on your disk. Convert your Documents to HTML format (web page) Getting Documents Ready . 6 2:33 PM6/12/09 by Tom Giambrone 7 The documents must be in HTML (web page) format. You are essentially creating a website in this process. Put the word document into the appropriate folder first. How to Convert All Word documents to html format: 1) Open document in Word. 2) Go to ->File -> Save as Web Page 3) Remove any spaces in the name. Save the file. When you save the web page WORD creates a folder that contains formatting instructions for the file with the same name. These two folders go together. If you move the file to a new location you will also have to move the folder to the same location. Hint: Windows Users: When you save as a web page Choose “Web Page”(XP) or “Single Web Page” ( Office 2003). This will give the same results as above. 7 2:33 PM6/12/09 by Tom Giambrone 8 Convert all of the Word files to web pages (html). THEN TRASH ALL OF YOUR ORIGINAL WORD FILES (i.e. Ending with .doc) This is what your folders should look like after you discard the Word files. Portfolio 8 2:33 PM6/12/09 by Tom Giambrone 9 Editing The Web Page Once your page is converted to html then you can edit by opening it in Word. DOUBLING CLICKING ON THE DOCUMENT WILL NOT WORK TO OPEN IT IN WORD. YOU MUST START UP WORD THE OPEN THE FILE FROM THE FILE MENU. QuickTime™ and a TIFF (Uncompressed) decompressor are needed to see this picture. When you done editing then Choose File -> Save. It will save it as a Web Page. Link Your Documents How to link. First you must have all of your documents converted to a web page (HTML.) If you do not do this, then when you transfer it to a disk it will not work. Remember: throw out the word files so you do not confuse the two. To link to a document. Starting with the Index Page: 9 2:33 PM6/12/09 by Tom Giambrone 10 1) Highlight text in the html document you want to link 2)Choose Insert -> Hyperlink. 3) Click on Document then select then document.
