Job Outline
1. JOB PURPOSE
To be responsible for the co-ordination and development of, and provide support to the
Scottish Peer Education Network.
2. JOB CONTEXT
Peer Education is an important form of volunteering for young people. The Scottish Government
funds Fast Forward to support the work of peer education through the Scottish Peer Education
Network (SPEN). Through the experience of Fast Forward there is an opportunity to build on and
develop the work of existing projects, support the strategic development of peer education in
Scotland, and work to develop new peer education initiatives in communities across Scotland. Key
to this post is the ability to co-ordinate, communicate and negotiate at both local and national levels.
3. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & FUNCTIONS
To co-ordinate and develop the Scottish Peer Education Network (SPEN)
To develop strong strategic links and partnerships to promote and further the use of peer
education in Scotland
To develop and deliver relevant training, support and resources to peer education projects and
practitioners
To develop sustainability and capacity building opportunities for peer education work
throughout Scotland.
To establish and implement effective means of dissemination of information and good practice
and update the SPEN website
To support the active involvement of Fast Forward volunteers in the SPEN work programmes,
To contribute to policy and strategy development within Fast Forward and through appropriate
networks in Scotland.
To support the work of the SPEN Advisory Group

4. EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS
ESSENTIAL
Good understanding of peer education approach
Knowledge of current policy and practice issues in youth work, health and social inclusion
Experience of developing and delivering training programmes
Experience of partnership working at operational and strategic levels
Experience of working with young people
Competence in basic computer use (Word, Excel, email etc)
Ability to work in team environment
Ability to use initiative and work autonomously, creatively and flexibly
DESIRABLE
Experience in developing and implementing monitoring and evaluation tools
Project management experience
Experience of work with young people as volunteers
Direct experience of peer education (i.e desirable not essential)
5 MANAGEMENT AND SUPPORT
The Scottish Peer Education Network Officer will be part of the Fast Forward team, and will be
responsible to the Board of Directors through the Fast Forward Chief Executive. Fast Forward is
committed to a policy of staff development through regular staff support and appraisal. The post
holder will be expected to take an active role in the staff team.
6. CONDITIONS OF SERVICE
The salary will be £23,820 pa (fixed contract until 31/03/2011)
The post holder will be based at the Fast Forward offices in Edinburgh, however the post will
involve some work across Scotland, therefore a willingness to travel and work unsocial hours is
essential. Travel and subsistence allowances will be paid. The normal working week is 35 hours.
The post will require work to occasionally be undertaken during evenings and weekends.
Annual holiday entitlement will be 30 days plus public holidays. A system of time off in lieu applies
for hours worked over and above the normal working week.
Fast Forward has a policy of Disclosure checking new personnel.
A contributory staff pension scheme is in operation.
