                                    Academic Refresher I

You will take the timed Academic Refresher Placement Test the first day of this class to
determine your academic level and what you need to focus on in upgrading your skills. This
class is a refresher on your academic skills. You will brush up on writing, reading, reading
comprehension, grammar rules, & sentence structure. Review your basic math skills in
fractions, signs, ratios, equations, functions, geometry, numbers (real, complex, & imaginary).
This will help you prepare for the GED exam or the Accu-Placer for community college. You
need a computer for homework assignments & email. A substantial amount of homework
will be assigned for students to study in between classes. Students must purchase a book
(approx. $45) based upon their skill level & recommended by the teacher.

                                    Academic Refresher II

This class is a refresher on your academic skills. Brush up on writing, reading, reading

have a computer for a substantial amount of homework assignments that will be emailed to your
teacher in between classes. Students must purchase a book (approx. $45) based upon skill
level & recommended by the teacher. This is a fast paced class and students should be
prepared to work hard so they will be prepared for their next level of education. Come
ready to work and learn!

  CLASSES FOR THE YOUNG AT HEART & RETIRED
                            AARP Driver Safety Program

In this important refresher course, AARP members, non-members, & veteran drivers will
learn defensive driving techniques, new traffic laws & rules of the road. Learn how to
compensate for age-related changes in vision, hearing & reaction time. This is not a
ticket dismissal course, but drivers may be able to obtain a reduction in car insurance
upon completion for 3 years. A supply fee of $12 for AARP or $14 for non-members is
payable by cash or check (checks payable to AARP) the day of the class to the
instructor. Bring your driver’s license and AARP membership card to the class.

                             Dance Your Booty Off Club
                                     Join Up!

ATTENTION JISD staff, family & friends of the district--come join our fun & moving
dance-exercise club! We had a blast in the past and want to continue so come when
you can! We will meet Mondays and/or Wednesdays at 5:00 p.m. in the JISD District
office or the Educational Resource Center. Come both nights--or one night weekly as it
fits into your schedule. Your instructor will lead the club, get our hearts pumping, &
booties moving. No dance skills required – if you can’t learn the steps – no worries –
move your booty to the beat of the music (or not if you are rhythm challenged). You will
learn how to stretch & tone muscles to prevent cramps after a workout too! Come in
comfortable clothes with a bottle of water. Get ready to sweat, tone your booty, & have
some fun!

                                   Computer Basics

This is a highly recommended first course for beginners who have little or no experience
with computers, or are computer-challenged. Learn in a relaxed atmosphere with a
young at heart, hands-on instructor. Learn how computers have evolved.. You will be
introduced to the keyboard, mouse, & computer functions. You will cover an introduction
to Windows, computer parts, & commands (how to create, store, & retrieve documents).
You will be ―going on-line‖ with E-mail on the Internet. Materials included. You will enjoy
the relaxed stress-free class!

         Introduction to Computers and Microsoft Applications (MS 2007)

Are you one of those people in a hurry to learn all you can about computers &
applications? Learn how to open and save documents, formatting, navigating, using the
tool ribbons, etc. Get an introduction to Microsoft Word, Excel, & PowerPoint. You will
discuss Outlook (navigating thru calendar & organizing contacts). This class will leave
you craving to learn more! Students should know the basic keyboard & mouse

Learn one of the strongest word-processing applications around. You will create
documents, save & edit, cut & paste, formatting, enhancing documents with fonts,
headers & footers, bullets & numbering using the numerous features provided in the
Ribbon area. Familiarize yourself with the spell checker, thesaurus, setting tabs, &
creating labels, and basic macros. Prerequisite: Introduction to Computers &
Applications & have keyboarding skills & familiar with the Windows operating system.

                         Introduction to Microsoft Excel 2007

You will become acquainted with the Excel 2007 spreadsheet program used on most of
the world’s computers. Learn to build common spreadsheet forms, such as payroll,
sales reports, inventory & budgets. Create formulas and use Excel’s many built-in
functions to perform complex, reliable calculations on large quantities of numerical data.
Use charts, graphic objects & learn how to manage lists of data. Learn the many labor-
saving features of this application to enhance your knowledge of spreadsheets for
business & your own personal use. Prerequisite: Intro to Computers & Applications or
equivalent experience with Windows operating system.

groups. You make a working presentation that includes your own pictures and data.

           Get Rid of Viruses, Pop-ups, Spy Ware, Ad Ware, Spam, Etc.

This is the course to help maintain computers in top operating condition. The recent
increase in Spy Ware and Ad Ware has become a real problem & your computer
becomes sluggish & not operating as fast as it could be. You will learn how to combat
Viruses, Pop-ups, Ads, Spy Ware, Ad Ware & SPAM. You will download, install, and
use various free programs along with some programs that you can purchase to maintain
your computer in tip top shape.

                                  Digital Cameras

This workshop covers some basics on digital cameras. What is a digital camera and
how does it work? How do you take pictures? How are they stored? How do you get
the pictures from the camera to the computer? How do you edit the pictures? How do
you print, send pictures on email, and work with pictures that you have taken? Learn
how to take some awesome pictures. (Be familiar with how to store computer folders &
files.)

Learn how to work with photos that you have taken with your digital camera and placed

                                   MS Paint Software

This is a fun & simple course. Paint is a program that is included on all computers.
Kids love this program and it can be useful to adults as a training tool. It can help with
mouse control, even simple picture editing and as an art creation program. You will
have fun with this course by learning from Digital Dave.

information, on the computer, on the web, or in the ―cloud‖? How can you be secure
anytime you are connected? Learn how to be secure when on Facebook, Myspace,
financial institutions, ordering items on line…anytime you are connected to the internet.

                       Email – Everything You Want to Know!

Get up to speed & learn how to email. Just about everything you do in this world has
something to do with email and the internet. Wouldn’t you love to email your kids,
grandkids, or friends? You will learn how to set up an account, send & receive mail, use
stationary, send attachments, create address book, group emails, etc.

                        Concealed Handgun License Course

This course provides the instruction and training requirements for the student to apply
for or renew a concealed handgun license (CHL) in Texas. The student will be required
to pass a written examination and satisfactorily demonstrate proficiency with a
handgun. Students must be at least 21 years old to take the handgun proficiency
examination. All requirements for the CHL will be explained at the beginning of
class. Students will provide their own handgun of at least .32 caliber, ammunition, and
hearing and eye protection. A valid Texas Drivers License/Texas ID card is required for
certification. The initial course requires a minimum of 12 hours of classroom and range
time. The renewal is 5 hours of classroom and range time. Completion of this course
requires a basic proficiency with a handgun. Basic pistol training is available upon
arrangements with the instructor.
Initial course is $75
Renewals are $50
(Additional fees: $8 range fees and $5 certification fee)
Renewals are completed on the second Saturday of each session.
(Note: Classes may be scheduled at other times as arranged with the
instructor. Please contact the Adult and Community Education Office at 210-945-5338
for details.)
Saturdays: 8:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. for two classroom sessions at Judson Learning
Academy and one 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. range session at Bracken Rifle and Pistol
Range as arranged in class. Do not bring handguns to the classroom. All pistol
handling and instruction will be done at the range.
An ad hoc class can be arranged for June, July or Aug. by calling 945-5338.

attack are some of the causes of sudden death. Save the life of a friend or family
member who has stopped breathing. This course is for nurses, doctors, teachers,
parents, students & others interested in certification or re-certification. After this course,
you will feel comfortable & confident when faced with life threatening situations. You will
learn infant, child, & adult CPR. Certification is offered at completion of course & is
recognized by the American Heart Assoc. guidelines.                          $35

                           Oil Painting One Day Workshop
                                     Ages 12 & Up

This workshop is for those with basic to intermediate knowledge of oil painting. We will
warm up by copying a simple painting, one of the old masters, then move on to a still life
set up. Students are welcome to bring in their ―works in progress‖. Supply List:
Ultramarine blue, permanent red medium (or cadmium red medium), permanent yellow
light (or cadmium yellow light), yellow ochre, titanium white, 1 or 2 Robert Simmons #4
or #6 Flat Bristle Brush, spill-proof container of Turpenoid (blue can), paper towels,
newspapers, easel, 2-3 8x10 canvases, large baggie or grocery bag, notebook & pen.

                                Middle Eastern Dance

Come have fun while learning the art of Middle Eastern belly dancing. You will learn
basic body isolations required to build a Middle Eastern Dance. These isolations are

GED Preparation Program
        GED classes assist students in preparing to take the five GED examinations
(Language Arts-Writing, Language Arts-Reading, Math, Social Studies, and Science).
Students gain academic skills necessary for the successful completion of their Texas
high school equivalency certificate.
        Students can enroll in the fall semester GED classes. Each student must provide
a valid form of identification (i. e., Texas driver’s license, Texas identification card, or
military ID) & social security number during registration. Prospective students 16-17
years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and provide official
withdrawal documentation from the last school attended and/or court order if applicable.
Watch for mandatory GED Registration info in the fall journal.

                               FREE ESL & CIVICS CLASSES

Mandatory ESL Registration will be held in the fall. Watch for dates in the fall
journal. Registration is first-come, first served; so come early. Bring a form of
identification, i.e. driver’s license or social security number. (No walk-ins after
registration. Classes start the following week.)
         The ESL course is for adults who wish to learn or improve their speaking,
reading, and writing skills in the English language. These classes provide instruction in
oral and written English for everyday use. The Civics portion provides a basic
introduction to U.S. history & government as well as preparation for students applying
for citizenship.

The Family Literacy Program provides the following: ABE & GED classes, ESL, Parent
& Child Together (PACT), Parenting Classes, Home Visitation from Family Specialist,
Early Childhood Classes (3-4 year olds), Field Trips, Computer Support, etc. All
services are provided free for our program participants. The program hours are from
8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The eligibility requirements are as follows: resides in the Judson
School District; parents seeking ABE/GED certificate; parents seeking to learn English.
To enroll, students must have proof of residency (i.e., utility bill or lease), photo ID
(Driver’s License/State ID); child’s birth certificate; social security cards for parents and
children; children’s immunization records. Watch for mandatory fall registration
information in the next issue. For additional information, call Family Literacy at 945-
6751. Family Literacy Center will be closed for the summer.

                             GED TESTING INFORMATION

General Information & Fees
         GED Examinees are required to successfully pass five tests to earn a GED
certificate. The five tests are: Language Arts-Writing, Social Studies, Science,
Language Arts-Reading and Mathematics. You must be at least 17 years old, not
enrolled in high school, and have a valid Texas driver’s license, DPS identification card
or military ID in order to register. A parent or guardian must accompany 17 year old
applicants to sign the registration. An official withdrawal document from the last school
attended must be presented.
        You can register and pay for tests in the Adult & Community Education
office at 8205 Palisades Drive in Live Oak on Monday--Friday, 8:00 -11:30 a.m. &
1:30 - 4:45 p.m. Please arrive by 3:00 p.m. Prior to arrival in the office, you must
complete the online GED Demographic form which can be accessed at
Judsonisd.org. Click on GED Program and under ―Requirements for Prospective
Examinees, you will see the link. Complete the online demographics form and keep the
user name and password. You will be asked for Judson’s code which is: 0445.
To complete your registration, you must come to the Adult & Community Education
office to complete the registration form and pay the testing fee of $105. All fees are
valid for one year only. Testing fees are to be paid at the time of registration in the form
of cash, money order, or credit card (VISA or MasterCard).
        A forfeiture of $18 per test applies when scheduled tests are not taken, unless
cancelled by student prior to test time. Registration closes for each Tuesday or
Wednesday’s test at 3:00 p.m. on the day prior to testing. GED tests are administered
every Tuesday & Wednesday at 4:45 p.m. as indicated below at the Secondary
Alternative/ Evening High School (formerly old Converse Elementary located at
102 School Street, Converse, TX 78109). Late examinees will not be allowed to test.

GED REGISTRATION PROCEDURES:
  All potential examinees must present a letter from an official GED prep instructor
  stating that the student is ready to take all or portions of the Official GED Tests
  battery OR provide a transcript after taking the Official GEDTS Practice test
  available at http://steckvaughn.harcourtachieve.com/en-US/gedpractice. Examinees
  that have self-prepped may be given the option to sign a waiver. Information on the
  waiver may be provided at the time of registration. Ask for details.
  Payment must be made with cash or money order prior to testing at the JISD Adult
  Education Department at the Judson Education Resource Center. (210) 945-5338.
  If the examinee is 17 years old, he/she must bring a parent/guardian to sign the
  registration.
  The Office of Student Support Services will accept telephone registration for testing
  for those examinees that have prepaid and pre-registered by calling (210) 945-7525.
  The deadline to call in prepaid registration is 4:00 PM on the Tuesday prior to the
  requested test date. The examinee’s name and requested test(s) will be placed on a
  list if slots are still available. Examinees need to report to the test site by 4:45 PM on
  the Wednesday of their test.
  The examinee must bring a proper picture ID. (Driver’s license, DPS ID, or Military
  ID) only. Do not bring anything else to the center: backpacks, books, purses, etc.

ACCOMMODATIONS:
       The Judson ISD GED testing service provides testing accommodations for
disabled candidates. Contact the JISD GED Test Center at (210) 945-7525 for further
information and to obtain an official application. Or visit the Texas Education Agency’s
website at http://www.tea.state.tx.us/ged/forms.html to download the proper forms.
       Candidates requesting accommodations must obtain and complete all sections of
the proper accommodation application. A certified or licensed professional must
complete the forms by providing current documentation and evaluation information on
the examinee. The completed forms must then be returned to the Office of Student
Support Services for review. The forms are then forwarded to the state department in
Austin for review and final approval. All forms must be approved and on file prior to
testing with an accommodation.

FEES:
       Cost for the testing is $105.00 for all 5 tests; this includes registration fees, & is
to be paid in full at registration in cash or money order. All fees will be kept on file for
one year after which time they cannot be refunded nor used for testing. Retest fees are
$18.00 per test. Students must present a retest letter at the time of registration or wait 6
months to retest the failed portion of the GED series. Also, if a student has signed up for
a GED test and does not call to cancel taking the test prior to test time, they will forfeit
the $18.00 testing fee.

SCORING:
    Scoring is not done in the district office. ALL scoring is being done in Austin and
    therefore no scores can be given over the phone. We have been advised by
    central scoring in Austin, that students will receive their scores approximately two
    to three weeks after they have been sent in for scoring. Tests will be sent in for
    scoring on the first Thursday of each month or when the examinee completes all
    five tests.

       All test scores and certificates earned from 1995 to present are not kept on file at
       Judson ISD. All testers and graduates must keep all their records received from
       TEA/GED in Austin. If records are needed from this time frame, individuals must
       call the GED Unit of the Texas Education Agency in Austin at (512) 463-9292.

                   Judson ISD GED Test Center Testing Schedules

Judson ISD GED Test Center will administer GED testing monthly, in English and
Spanish, on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 5:00PM at 102 School Street in Converse.
This schedule shall remain in place unless there is a holiday or unforeseen need to
cancel. All examinees need to arrive no later than 4:45PM with proper identification. The
Writing test portion and the Mathematics test portion will be administered by alternating
the Tuesdays of every month. The other three required test portions which are Social
Studies, Science and Reading will be administered on every Wednesday of the month
unless it is a holiday.

                            GED GRADUATION CEREMONY

GED students testing with Judson I.S.D. who passed all five portions of the GED exam
successfully during the 2009-2010 school year will be honored in graduation
ceremonies held in May at the Performing Arts Theater. Qualifying students will
receive a letter of invitation. It is important to keep a current address with the GED Test
Center at 945-7525.

                                   GED SCHOLARSHIP

GED students that tested with Judson I.S.D. during the last school year may be eligible
to apply for a scholarship through the GED program if they have met minimum scores.
Students must be legal U.S. citizens. Students that have met the requirements will be
sent a letter of invitation to apply for the scholarship. Students will be given directions
on how to obtain a copy of the scholarship application in the letter of invitation. Eligible
students that receive the scholarship must participate in the graduation ceremony, as
recipients will be honored at graduation.

effort is made to offer makeup classes due to inclement weather or unforeseen

Do you like to make noise? Texas Dance and Cheer by Diversified Youth Services
wants you on our squad. Our program teaches cheerleading to children ages 4-16. You

and tennis shoes to class. Students will be able to participate in a Spur’s game
performance. Registration is open throughout semester. $8 registration fee at first

This program encourages self-defense, physical fitness, competitive spirit & self-
discipline. Students are instructed in safety awareness, defense against attack, anti-

dangerous situations. This is for ages 4 & up. A uniform is available, but not

daily count by 8:30 a.m. The program includes educational academic enrichment
activities, reading/quiet time, mind-stimulating games, character & leadership building
activities, behavioral & etiquette skills, storytelling, arts & crafts, & field trips, etc. Space

dance-exercise club! We had a blast last semester on a trial basis and want to continue
so come when you can! We will meet Mondays and Wednesdays at 5:00 p.m. in the
JISD District office or the Educational Resource Center, depends which room is
available. Come both nights--or one night weekly as it fits into your schedule. Jill will
lead the club, get our hearts pumping, & booties moving. No dance skills required – if
you can’t learn the steps – no worries – move your booty to the beat of the music (or not
if you are rhythm challenged). Jill will show us how to stretch & tone muscles to prevent
cramps after a workout too! Come in comfortable clothes with a bottle of water. Get
ready to sweat, tone your booty, & have some fun!

                               Ages 12 years & older

Learn the basics of ―single sword‖ stage combat. Award winning fight choreographer &
national fencing champion Gary Vanderwege will teach the attacks & defenses used in
preparing safe sword combat routines as seen on stage and in film. Age limitations: 12
years & older strictly enforced. The instructor provides the use of protective equipment
& the student will receive a saber to keep.

San Antonio Reiki Drumming Circle helps to introduce a method of enhance Reiki and

                                   Heated Pool

Join our water aerobics class in the heated & secluded outdoor pool. You will learn
beneficial exercises to improve your health and balance. The class is a blast & our
motivated instructors will keep you moving! A calendar will be provided & classes meet
7-8 sessions monthly. Some equipment required. A dressing room is available near
pool. Due to safety concerns, instructor must be in pool area before students can enter.
Unaccompanied children are not allowed to wait in the pool area or building. Please
discuss any health issues with your instructor prior to the class. Please follow guidance
from our certified instructors. Class size is limited.

                                        Kayaking

Kayaking in the Texas Hill Country is an exciting water sport that is popular with all
ages. Veteran kayaker Bob Silva, who has over 9 years of coastal, river, and open
water kayaking, will lead you on an excursion down the Guadalupe River above Canyon
Lake. Observe spectacular sections of the river seldom seen by the public. Instruction
focuses on safety and the essentials of river kayaking. Register soon, this class is very
popular and fills-up quickly! Students ages 10-15 will require a parent at river flows over
1000 cfs. Under that, no parent is needed. All safety gear & equipment is provided.
Students should bring water and snacks. Detailed trip instructions are provided (via
email) one week prior to event date.
