									Connect to the East Carolina University Network
Residence Hall How-To
To keep our network secure, new users are required to perform 4-5 of the following steps before connecting
to the East Carolina University network:

   1.   Uninstall existing antivirus software (McAfee, AVG, etc.).
   2.   Install the latest ECU version of Symantec AntiVirus.
   3.   Download and install the Cisco Clean Access Agent software.
   4.   Download the latest virus definitions through Symantec’s LiveUpdate feature.
   5.   Download any updates for your Windows operating system (Vista or XP).

        If you purchased a Mac computer from Dowdy Student Stores, only complete STEP 4. You have the
       latest version of Symantec AntiVirus and should only run the Symantec LiveUpdate feature. You do
        not need to download Cisco Clean Access Agent nor check Windows Update.

        If you purchased your Mac computer from anywhere else, complete STEPS 1, 2 and 4. You will need
       to uninstall your current antivirus program, install the ECU version of Symantec AntiVirus and run the
        Symantec LiveUpdate feature.

        If you purchased your PC through Dowdy Student Stores, please complete STEPS 3, 4 and 5.
       The appropriate Symantec AntiVirus version is already installed on your computer. You need only
        download the Cisco Clean Access Agent, run the LiveUpdate feature and check Windows Update.

        If you purchased your computer elsewhere, begin with STEP 1 and complete all steps
       through 5.

        Vista operating system includes a security feature called User Account Control (UAC). As you move

       through the Cisco Clean Access Agent routine, the UAC consent dialog box will appear from time to
        time stating that, An Unidentified Program Wants Access to Your Computer. THIS IS NORMAL.
        Press Allow to continue.

       Items needed to complete these steps include your computer and a network cable.
       Allow at least 30 minutes or longer to complete all steps.

Step 1. Uninstall the Current Antivirus Program
   1. Power on the computer. You are not connected to the Internet at this time.
   2. Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs(XP) OR Start > Control Panel >
      Uninstall a Program (Vista).
   3. Scroll through the list of programs to find the current antivirus program. Click the program once to
      highlight. Press Remove (XP) or Uninstall (Vista).

Step 2. Install Symantec Antivirus
   1. From the main menu of the Pirate Essentials CD, choose > Antivirus Software.
   2. Choose the appropriate software version for your operating system (Mac, XP or Vista) and click that
      link to continue.
   3. Read the license agreement and choose > I Agree.
   4. Save the program to your computer’s desktop (XP and Vista).
   5. Go to the desktop and double-click the Symantec AntiVirus software application icon.
   6. Follow the onscreen instructions to download and install the program.

Step 3. Download Cisco Clean Access Agent
   1. Insert the network cable into the network port of your computer.
   2. Plug the computer cable into the network jack. NOTE that a telephone cable and network cable do
      look similar, but a network jack is larger.
   3. Open a browser window to connect to the Internet (Internet Explorer).
   4. You should see a screen that reads, Campus Living/Reznet. If you do not see this screen, call the
      HELP DESK at 328-9866.
   5. Log in using your PirateID/passphrase. This is the same username and password you use for e-mail.
   6. Press the Clean Access Agent button in the middle of the screen and download the software to your
   7. Double-click the Cisco Clean Access Agent icon to install. Note that a successful install shows an icon
      in the lower right corner of the taskbar. A dialog box should also appear on the screen.
   8. Log in to the dialog box using your PirateID/passphrase.
   9. You now have limited access to ECU’s network for one hour to complete Steps 4 and 5.

Step 4. Update Virus Definitions Using the Symantec LiveUpdate Feature
The Cisco Clean Access Agent software will prompt you to update your virus definitions using the
LiveUpdate feature of the Symantec Antivirus software.

Follow the dialog boxes to complete Step 4. Click > Next and > Finish as appropriate. This step may take
some time depending on the number of new virus profiles available for your computer.

Step 5. Check Windows Update
The Cisco Clean Access Agent software will prompt you to check the Microsoft Windows Update site for the
latest critical updates for your operating system.

   1. Go to >Start > All Programs > Windows Update OR go to
   2. Click > Install Updates.
   3. Follow the dialog boxes to complete Step 5.

After successfully completing Steps 1 through 5, you should be able to access the Internet from your
residence hall room.
