					                            Senior Sabre – international season 2010/11

General:

The Excel sheet indicates the list of nominated international competitions and training events. It
also indicates the selection dates for FIE competitions (GP, A and satellites).

FIE A and GP competitions:

As part of the overall strategy to raise the level of Sabre within the UK, the following principles will
apply for the selection of athletes for senior FIE A, GP and team competitions:
 Athletes will need to have demonstrated a level of performance at either junior level (if making
    the transition to senior level) or senior level that demonstrates to the respective weapon
    captain that they have the ability and commitment to building towards and achieving results at
    senior international level that would eventually qualify them for national team and
    championship selection;
 Athletes will commit to undertake, with guidance of their own coach(es), a documented training
    and fitness regime and to regularly (where possible) attend squad training sessions (see
    ANNEX);
 Athletes performance through the season (domestic and international) will influence selection
    for FIE competitions;
 During the latter months of 2010, prior to the start of the FIE senior season at Orleans (WS)
    and Plovdiv (MS), athletes will be expected to gain international experience and attain results
    at various continental competitions and/or FIE satellite events (see Excel sheet for dates etc).
    Entries for these competitions will be coordinated with the WS and MS weapon captains and
    for FIE satellites, the selection noted below will apply.
Subject to final publication of the new selection procedures on the BF website (International
Committee):
 Weapon Captains will be responsible for selecting according to the IC selection and ranking
    schemes;
 Any selection deviation from the rules of the new selection procedure will need to be submitted
    to a nominated selection panel for approval;
 Any problems with selection that cannot be resolved by the weapon captain will also go to the
    nominated selection panel.
There will be opportunity for appeals against non-selection to be heard and it is assumed that the
selection dates will provide sufficient time before the FIE entry deadline in order that there is
sufficient time for appeals to be heard and judged.

FIE satellite competitions:

In addition, the following principles will apply for the selection of athletes for FIE satellite
competitions (excluding Newcastle and applying from Amsterdam onwards):
 Athletes should have achieved at least a L16 (within the past 2 seasons) at either of the
    following domestic competitions - Hamlet Open, Bristol Open, Welsh Open, Birmingham
    International, Pro sabre or the National championships;
 A selection date for each FIE satellite competition is indicated on the sabre calendar (see Excel
    sheet);
 If more than 4 qualified athletes wish to be selected, the respective weapon captain (and sabre
    representatives) will endeavour to find a referee and the referee’s cost will be split equally
    amongst the athletes that are selected and take part in the competition;

                                                     1
 If, at the selection date there are less than 4 or no qualified athletes that wish to be selected,
    the respective weapon captain may, at his discretion, select other non qualified athletes (that
    have indicated they wish to be selected) but to a maximum of 4 athletes.
For the Ghent MS satellite on 24 October, athletes should contact Paul Greening or James
Williams if they wish to be entered.
The attached Excel sheet shows the dates of the WS and MS satellite competitions (in the column
“FIE satellites and others”) and the selection dates.

ANNEX

                   Senior and Junior Sabre Squad Training Sessions 2010/11

    Notice for all athletes in the current top 20 of the National Senior and Junior Squads

As part of an initiative to develop a more cohesive, structured and effective training and
preparation regime for Sabre, the Sabre Senior and Junior Weapon Captains are organising squad
training sessions for athletes who are currently in contention for selection to compete in junior and
senior World Cup Competitions. This initiative is part of the overall strategy to raise the level of
Sabre within the UK.
The aim these sessions is to support athletes via the provision of sports specific technical training
and fencing specific conditioning training. This will enable Sabre athletes at junior and senior
levels, to establish a periodised programme in order to improve their performances at elite
international level.
It is acknowledged that many athletes may already have training and competition plans for the
forthcoming season. These sessions should in no way conflict with these plans. It is anticipated
that the demand and applications to attend training may well exceed the capacity to cater for all the
interested athletes. For this reason there will be an element of selection for training. Athlete
attendance will be prioritised on the following basis.
   Athletes qualified for selection for the Senior World Championships Paris 2010;
 Athletes on the BF World Class Performance Pathway (Including Current TASS Scholars 09/10
    and nominated TASS Scholars 2010/11);
 Athletes in the top 20 of the GB under 20 Rankings (no cadets are eligible to attend unless by
    specific invitation);
