From the Principal ……
Dear School Community
Lorne Conference It was wonderful to be back at school after a busy conference in Lorne on Monday and Tuesday last
week. The conference focussed on the importance of childhood development between the ages of 0 and 5 as being the
most essential to language development. Professional Frank Oberklaid from the Royal Children’s Hospital highlighted
the research on brain development and how the earliest intervention is the most likely to succeed.
ANZAC Day Reflection I would like to acknowledge Bill Huggins (President of Ocean Grove RSL) who represented the
Ocean Grove Branch of the RSL at our ANZAC assembly on Friday. Bill was the highlight with a wonderful speech
about the meaning of ANZAC Day and life in general. He helped the children reflect on the story of the ANZACs and
their part in Australian history. The children need to be congratulated for their listening and singing of the National
Anthem. Earlier in the day our school captains Emily, Finn and I attended the Geelong Schools ANZAC Day Ceremony
at Johnstone Park where they laid a wreath on behalf of our school community (see pictures below). I took the
opportunity to attend the Ocean Grove ANZAC Day Service on Sunday with my daughter. It was a fantastic tribute and
one which our OGPS children will be attending next year.
Buildings Update We have received a further grant for furniture in our new building. We share our community’s
frustration. Mandy and I are keeping the pressure on the project managers to ensure the best outcome for our children.
When we have definite timelines they will be publicly shared. I was speaking to the Principal at Drysdale Primary School
who is under the same impression that their site manager will be coming across very shortly to Ocean Grove to
commence the project. What the building will look like can be viewed at
http://www.education.vic.gov.au/about/directions/buildingrevolution/spaces/default.htm We are currently in negotiation
with the company who has our PREP playground in storage about releasing and reinstalling it. I will keep everyone up
to date on this too.
NAPLAN 2010 Our school is happy to have transparency around testing and results but as you are probably aware
from the media the AEU has decided to boycott the NAPLAN tests due to the My School Website and concerns about
the use of data from this site. Negotiations are continuing between the AEU and the Federal Minister Julia
Gillard. Unless I receive specific advice to the contrary our school will continue to plan for the implementation of the
tests on May 11, 12 and 13 and I will keep the school community fully informed as events unfold.
School Camp The Year 5 children are at the Urban Camp in Melbourne this week. Thanks to Mr Hughes who has
organised a busy but fantastic itinerary. I will be joining the children on Thursday night for a meal and movie. From my
perspective I feel it is extremely important that the Principal supports the children, teachers and parent helpers during
the camp program. I acknowledge the terrific teachers and volunteers who make themselves available to attend camp
and supervise the children.
Coaching As highlighted, this term we are beginning a coaching program at OGPS. What is coaching? It involves
having another set of eyes to help teachers to reflect on their planning, preparation and implementation of the
curriculum. A period of observation is followed by a reflection session. We have established a set of classroom
protocols around our classroom visits. My coaching day is Thursday and Mrs Duthie’s is on Tuesday. As a result I will
be now wearing my Ocean Grove polo on Thursdays. This week I felt a little out of place with a suit on as I need to be
part of the classroom. Coaching is the “real” work of a Principal that makes a difference to learning.
School Improvement On Tuesday the leadership team visited Bellaire Primary School and Baden Powell College in
Hoppers Crossing to investigate learning spaces and structures in preparation for our new building.
School Pride Day On Friday, 14th May, we are planning to hold a School Pride Day. Planning for the event is still
underway, but the day is designed to encourage our children to develop a sense of pride and connection with their
school. Activities could be such as bring a native plant to put in our school
grounds, have a school clean up or write their reasons why Ocean Grove is the
BEST school. Stay tuned for more information.
Good Luck Our best wishes go to Sam
Allen, Bryce Newton, Angus Benson and
Charlie Sprague, the boys swimming at
MSAC on Tuesday at the State Swimming
Primary School Championship. The results
will be in next week’s Grove Gazette.

Staff Car Park
A reminder to parents that the staff car park at school is out of bounds for all of our students – for
their own safety, students are not allowed in the car park.
We ask that parents do not park in the staff car park.
Education Week this year is from Monday, 17th to Friday, 21st May — this is also Prep Enrolment Week,
when we encourage parents of children starting Prep next year to enrol into primary school. Open Day
activities are planned for the morning of Thursday, 20th May. We encourage all parents, relatives and
friends who can, to come and visit your child / children at school during that morning. Also on Open
Morning, we encourage parents of Kinder children who wish to enrol their child in Prep in 2011, to come to
the school at any time between 9.00am to 1.00pm. On that morning, our student leaders will conduct tours
for parents wishing to enrol their child in Prep in 2011. (Kinder students and siblings are most welcome)

Isaac Carpenter of 4BL is trying to collect some footy boots for the indigenous children of Leonora in Western
Australia. Isaac’s uncle recently moved to Leonora and is going to be helping to teach the local children some
footy skills but they are in desperate need of some boots. So — if you have some footy boots you have grown
out of, please bring them along to school and drop them into Mr. Baltetsch’s classroom. Lets try to help with
this great idea. Thank you in advance, Isaac Carpenter.
