Dear Fellow Catechists:

“Clap your hands, all you peoples;
Shout to God with loud songs of joy.”
[Psalm 47:1]

Music is an integral part of the programs in the Born of the Spirit Series and
the We Are Strong Together Series. Music allows the children to deepen
their religious imagination, to freely express feelings and provides a key
prayer form for praise and thanksgiving. Music sets the mood and is an
excellent means for the children to absorb what is being shared. Music and
gestures for songs are provided at the back of the manual in
Recommended Resources. The songs are included on a cassette or CD
and accompany the specific themes in the resources. These songs are also
used randomly throughout the program and may also be integrated into
parish liturgical celebrations. The programs use original music composed
especially for the programs as well as well known liturgical music. Since
music and song are such natural vehicles for children, we encourage you to
use them frequently in your sessions as well as in liturgical celebrations
within the parish. Music provides yet another way for our children to realize
and use God’s precious gifts to each of us, in this case the gifts of voice
and song. Make a joyful noise unto the Lord!!!!

Steps to teaching a new song:

The best way to teach a new song to children is to sing it to them.
     1. Listen to the song and learn it yourself.
     2. Print the text on a large piece of paper for the children. Discuss
        the words together.
     3. Sing/play the entire song to them while pointing out the words.
     4. Sing/play one line/phrase at a time and have the children repeat it
        after you.
     5. After learning a chunk of music i.e. the refrain or a verse, have the
children sing that much back to you.
     6. Put the whole song together. You may want to clap out any tricky
        rhythms.
     7. Let them sing without you if they can.
     8. Add accompaniment [piano, guitar] or the cassette or CD.
     9. Repetition is the best teacher. Sing the song often.
