Views & News - Catch-up with Old Boys
A number of Old Boys sent messages this month. Thank you!

TRUSCOTT, Charles 1956 – 1967 | | Sent a photograph to us of Pat Ryan (second from left and
wife Dorothy on Right) taken in Francistown, Swaziland in 1987 at the opening of Shashe Mine together with the CEO of
Phelps Dodge. Click here (Thank you Charles)

COGGIN, Chris 1954-1957 | | Australia | +61 08 93325002 | Hi Joy, I read with great interest
the excellent tributes to Pat Ryan paid by Gordon Collins and Peter Simkins and would like to add a few words if I may.
(Everyone in the school called him Spud, by the way, and his name was well-known outside Kearsney as well.)

As a junior who occasionally joined up with Pat in the train from Carltonville to Maritzburg, I benefited much from the
warmth and helpfulness he extended towards me, especially on the first one or two occasions when I found travelling on
my own by train was quite a daunting experience. (My train came from Ventersdorp, and I had to change at Carltonville.)

Spud’s disarming friendliness (as Gordon put it so well) and a sly sense of humour tended to come through even in his
everyday dealings with us younger mortals. He really was an exceptionally popular prefect. But his presence was even
more commanding on the sports field. I recall vividly attending an inter-provincial rugby match at Kingsmead (can’t
remember who Natal was playing, unfortunately). Kearsney played one of the curtain-raisers, and from time to time we
would chant, “Give it to Spud” who we believed as a winger would always do the right thing with that ball. But it was in the
main game itself, ie the inter-provincial one, where Spud’s reputation came to the fore. A man nearby, the worse for drink,
took up the cry and whenever the Natal line had the ball he would bellow, “Give it to Spud.” Much to the amusement of
the KC boys, of course, and perhaps to Pat’s embarrassment, for he was naturally a modest fellow!

Can you help solve a mystery? Colin Downie (1957) and Dr Shuker (1948) have found a manuscript amongst papers

interesting background. Contact

Reflections on-line
“Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, ...” (1Corinthians 1:1)

There are so many exciting things for us to do and be in the world; the choices are endless! The challenge, however, is
to do and be what God calls us to because only then will our lives be truly exciting and ultimately happy. God is calling
each one of us to do something special with our life. Listen and hear his voice.
