Methodology

       This study is derived from three key sources: secondary research, primary research, and

the personal expertise of the authors.



       Secondary research included acquiring product literature, press releases, and brochures of

desktop video competitors and over 3500 related articles in industry journals, trade magazines,

newspapers, computer and video magazines via library research. From this secondary research,

initial primary research strategies were determined and background information files were built.



       Primary research included in-depth telephone and face-to-face interviews with over 80

officers and product management professionals in key competitor, reseller, and end user

organizations within the desktop video market.



       The authors of this report are also founders of Desktop Video Products, a key Northern

California multiple services organization focusing on the desktop video market. They were able

to draw upon their own expertise in interpreting some of the information obtained from primary
and secondary research. The authors have over 35 years of experience in the personal computer

and desktop video industries, including time managing the personal computer analysis section of

a major industry research firm, as well as the technical (2 engineering bachelor's) and business (1

MBA) educational backgrounds to cope with the complexities of the desktop video technologies

and market.



       The desktop video market is forecasted in terms of unit shipments, revenues, and growth

rate projections for the period between 1989 and 1999. These forecasts are based on raw data
obtained from the primary and secondary research, as triangulated against market forecasts

obtained from other Market Intelligence Research Corporation and competitive reports on the

multimedia and conventional video markets as well as information from the Electronic Industries

Association and the U.S. Department of Commerce.



       From this cumulative research, the authors were able to develop discussions on industry

trends, industry history and technology, competitive environments and analyses, and strategies

for success. Lists of desktop video companies as well as profiles of a selected few are included

with the report.
