Djavan is an international superstar of Brazilian music for more than 30 years, with 19
hit albums, an outpouring of classic songs, and countless awards to his credit. He is
recognized by critics, fans and musicians in Brazil and far beyond, as a leading singer /
songwriter with an instantly recognizable style. Now he visits the Fillmore Miami Beach
at the Jackie Gleason Theater in concert Friday October 29th, in support of his gorgeous
new CD release “Aria.”

“Ária” is the most anticipated moment of the opera, the culmination, the privileged space
of sublime melody. “Ária”, Djavan’s new CD, is one of the most anticipated releases of
Brazilian contemporary music, marking the first time in his 34 year career that Djavan,
with his unique style and beautiful voice, is interpreting a carefully selected group of
songs by other song writers like Gilberto Gil, Chico Buarque, Edu Lobo, Cartola, Luiz
Gonzaga and more.

A Latin Grammy Award-winner, Djavan has been heralded by The New York Times as
“an artist who has fused many of the dominant styles onto a personal music [that is]
brilliant and comprehensive.” His style traverses Brazilian borders reaching world
music audiences with a blend of pop, jazz, African rhythms, bossa nova, funk, samba,
R&B and northeastern sounds. For his US tour, three outstanding Brazilian musicians
will accompany Djavan on stage: Torcuato Mariano on electric and acoustic guitar,
André Vasconcellos on acoustic bass, and the percussive arsenal of Marcos Suzano.

Born into a poor family in Alagoas, Northeastern Brazil, Djavan moved to Rio de Janeiro
as a young man in 1983 and began singing in clubs. His 1976 album A Voz, O Violão e
a Arte de Djavan catapulted him into stardom. A string of hits followed that developed
his unique sound. Renowned as a composer as well as a singer, Djavan’s
compositions have been recorded by a Who’s Who of Jazz and Brazilian stars: Al
Jarreau, Caetano Veloso, Chico Buarque, Carmen McRae, The Manhattan Transfer,
Eliane Elias, Gal Costa, Dori and Nana Caymmi, Lenine, Daniela Mercury, Maria
Bethânia and many others. In 2000 his sublime and emotional performance of

“Faltando um Pedaço” on the CBS broadcast of the first Latin Grammy Awards left a
mark on the North American audience. That same night, “Acelerou” won Best Brazilian
Song, taken from the double live album “Ao Vivo” that sold over 1.2 million copies.

“Ária” – The new album
“Ária,” released this fall by the respected Brazilian label Biscoito Fino, showcases
Djavan’s beautiful voice with sublime, simple arrangements of classic tunes. The
repertoire is engaging: iconic hits like “Palco” (Gilberto Gil), “Valsa Brasileira” (Edu
Lobo and Chico Buarque), “Apoteose ao Samba” (Silas de Oliveira and Mano Décio)
and even Frank Sinatra’s “Fly Me To The Moon”, all totally guided by the singer’s
emotional attachment to the songs.

The unusual instrumental set-up is small but aesthetically liberating: Djavan’s own
acoustic guitar, Torcuato Mariano’s electric and acoustic guitar, the acoustic bass of
André Vasconcellos and Marcos Suzano’s multiple percussion. This innovative and first-
rate band reinterprets these popular songs, most of them very well known, and, without
losing their essence, uses jazz sensibilities and loose melodies that fly over the
Brazilian rhythmic foundations. It is an album from a master in the art of singing, playing
and arranging; light and rejuvenated with the songs sounding brand new.

“I never imagined making a record like this because writing songs has always been a
pleasure. So I thought: I’m going to have fun. And I also thought: it’s going to be an
easy record. I won’t have to write the songs. I was mistaken. I ended up having a great
time reinventing and researching other people’s songs but it was also one of the most
difficult records to make, particularly when I had to choose the repertoire”, said Djavan.

Djavan in concert in Miami is presented by Espirito Santo Bank. Additional support is
provided by TAM Airlines, the Consulate General of Brazil in Miami, Gazeta Brazilian
News, Acontece Magazine, Motion TV Online, Plum TV, Atlantic Broadband, City of
Miami Beach and the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs.
