Make it happen
Author: Brett D Fuller
With an increased awareness among people regarding drug addiction and abuses the
rehab programs and treatment centers have assumed a great importance in today`s
world. With infomercials on television, newspapers and internet it is no more a jargon for
any. Alcohol rehab has come to the front row because the statistics show that the
number of patients registered with alcohol addiction is on the high. Next is drug addiction
like opiate, heroin, cocaine to name a few.
Alcohol and its variants are readily available in all degrees and prices. Drinking one or
two shots at a party or during an outing is harmless. Infact it is seen as a medium that
enhances celebration and enjoyment. The real problem steps in when people just don`t
press the ‘stop’ button while consuming alcohol. Someone has to intervene before things
get foggy. So you have friends or family members who try to create barriers in order cut
the addiction. Since these are amateurish behavior it doesn`t yield desirable results. We
cannot blame them as well. Atleast these people are trying to help the addict in some
way or the other. Since the situation generally goes out of hand professional treatment is
the only alternative. Alcohol rehab works on the principle of total addiction removal
physically and psychologically.
When we take the addict to these rehab centers it is very vital to keep some foolish pre-
conceived notions at bay. Many people believe that the treatment programs are grueling
and the bearer cannot take the pressure. They also opine that lack of freedom makes life
more miserable for the alcoholics. Infact it is just the opposite that occurs. The best
rehab centers provide state- of-art facilities. In a residential environment the treatment
is ensued. Each rehab center is different when it comes to physical spaces. Generalizing
all of them and deriving at one`s wrong conclusions will act as a mind block.
It is the will and the determination of the drug addict that plays a key role in the
successful completion of the treatment. Unless he or she doesn`t understand the
importance of his or her own well- being even God cannot help them. Alcohol rehab is
not launching a rocket into the space. It is a process that makes you fight the wrong
habits and it is a well- known fact that the fight between good and bad is not a very easy
one. Earlier it used to be physically and emotional taxing but with modern and friendly
best rehab centers the battle is less painful.
On a daily basis we have to encounter many events be it in our home, schools, colleges
and workplace to name a few. Many of them are life-altering events and have effects that
last for ages. Of course if an event has brought smiles on your face you would love to
remember it as long as possible. But here am talking about some unexpected negative
experiences. They tend to leave a scar on your mind till one drop dead. Some are so
vulnerable that they break into pieces while other few try to combat them with will and
determination. Kudos to them and for the weaker ones we haven’t forgotten them. For
such depressed and shattered lives and minds we have post traumatic stress disorder or
PTSD addiction treatment which is channelized by rehabilitation centers.
On a visit to one such rehab I found out about a woman who is battling to gain her
normalcy and beat the stress which has captured her after a painful incident. This lady
hailing from fisherman's family had five boys and two girls. She used to live indoors with
her daughters while the sons sailed to the wild sea for earning livelihood. In a span of
few years she lost her husband and her four sons. She could manage to breathe with this
loss. The death of the youngest one was the last straw. She still remembers the morning
when her son asked her to stay fit and instructed his two sisters to take care of the
family till he returns from sea.
She was caught in a dilemma. She could neither stop her son from venturing into the sea
nor could she make herself believe that her last son will not face the same fate like all
the other men in the family. As her fears got true the dead body of her son was brought
home the next day. This experience shook her so much that she was as cold as a hard
rock. Her daughters tried to make her emote but this lady didn't move an inch. Without
any further delay she was brought to a rehab centre that dealt with this kind of
Today after I heard the story I found a great difference in her attitude and temperament.
She has evolved as a stronger individual who is harboring a fresh energy to live her life.
Under the supervision of professional experts and enrolled under best drug program the
positive change in her cannot escape anyone's eye. Like her many women have found
effective ways to recover from depression, fear, flashbacks, anger, sleep problems and
are learning techniques to cope with their traumatic experiences.
Say no to binging and purging
I got a very funny incident for you all. Few months back my aunt, my cousin and I went
for a movie in the evening. As we all know movies without popcorn and snacks are
incomplete. So following the same tradition we took three packets of popcorn, butter
corn and a mini bucket of chicken strips. All set for the evening. We were all gleaming
with excessive joy which comes out before you catch a flick and crossed our fingers that
the movie doesn`t disappoint us lest all arrangements would be vain. So after a series of
some local advertisements on face cream and computer service centre the movie loaded
on the screen. The remaining experience is what I really didn`t imagine.
Within few minutes we were done with our food items. Apart from the popcorn packets
my cousin and I just got few tidbits of the remaining stuff that we brought. Two of us
were extremely disappointed. Our aunt just had the whole bucket and butter corn all by
herself. She had no qualms about it. I wondered why she doesn`t share things with
others. It is like if there is a plate full of some fries or snacks she will keep on taking
unaware of the fact that there are others around and it is meant for all.
This kind of habit has become a compulsive problem with her and whether at home or
restaurants or anywhere her binging doesn`t stop. She feels it is no big deal to eat her
heart out. But there has to be a line drawn between your liking and your blind obsession.
Our family members concluded that this kind of behavior is not at all ordinary. I mean
being a foodie is one thing but overdoing that is uncalled for. Somehow we felt that this
may classify as eating disorders.
Before things get out of hand we persuaded her to seek medical assistance. Infact it was
a great fiasco that ensued when the news was broken to her that she has to be under
treatment for eating. She thought we are acting crazy and excluding her. It took few
days for her to come into terms with the problem that is plaguing her but unfortunately
she is unaware. Thankfully our goodwill gesture was valued. At present she is undergoing
binge eating disorder treatment in a residential eating disorder rehab and we received
a call yesterday from people out there who confirmed that my aunt is showing signs of
improvement. Indeed the hard work is paying off.
