PNG to consider the CFHS with a view to considering its applicability by PNG authorities and to determine how PNG
could better cooperate with Australia in the management of the Torres Strait Fisheries.

For 2008 Australia’s share in the Australian area of the TSPZ prawn fishery is 6867 days combined with other input
restrictions. PNG’s share is 2104 days on the same basis.
Australia’s share in the PNG area of the TSPZ prawn fishery is 217 days.

Australia to advise PNG of its allocation as far in advance of the 2008 as possible.

PNG to consider ways to work more cooperatively with Australia on managing this fishery.

Hold further discussions about Australia’s proposals for catch sharing and catch offsetting in the TRL fishery in the

PNG agreed, in principle, to Preferential Entitlement arrangements to be finalised in the Catch Sharing Working Group
established at Action Item 2.

Australia and PNG expressed concerns about current harvest levels, illegal take and harvest of undersized stocks.
OUTCOME 14.
Noting the importance of BDM to treaty villages in PNG, Australia supported PNG’s desire to investigate the closure of
the fishery

Commercial activity in the Pearl Shell fishery will remain in its current arrangements for the 2008 season.

The list of catch shared fisheries referred to as “Schedule D” will be amended to reflect that the harvest of turtle should
only be conducted by Australian and PNG Traditional Inhabitants for traditional purposes.
