System Requirements for home computers using SurreyHeath VLE
Bandwidth requirements
Computer home access of any bandwidth and even on a dial-up modem will achieve connection to the
VLE, but the user experience will be dependent on their line speed.

Client/Browser requirements
In order to access the SurreyHeath VLE the computer has to have sufficient specification to run a
supported OS / browser combination at acceptable speed, and have to have colour display with at least
800x600 resolution.
Fronter does not have a preferred browser or operating system but follow guidelines from the World
Wide Web Consortium <http://www.w3.org/>.

Fronter is compatible with the most commonly used platforms and browsers. The list is constantly re-
evaluated to include new, innovative software. To ensure maximum compatibility, the development
environment includes Mac OS, Linux and Windows. For an updated list of browser combinations, see
http://frontersupport.co.uk/ and search for “What browsers are recommended by Fronter?”.

The following browser combinations are supported
    • Combination 1: Windows 2000/XP/Vista and IE 6.0 and IE 7
    • Combination 2: Windows 2000/XP/Vista and Mozilla Firefox 1.5 and 2.0 +
    • Combination 3: Mac OS X and Mozilla Firefox 1.5 and 2.0 +
    • Combination 4: Mac OS X and Safari 1.0+
    • Combination 5: Linux and Mozilla 1.7 or Firefox 1.5, 2.0

To enable all features of Fronter, the browser security must be set to medium, and the Fronter.com &
Fronter.uio.no websites must be a "secure site". This is done in every browser, and will allow all parts of
Fronter to work without being rejected by the client software.

The important settings in the browser are:
    • Download Signed ActiveX controls – Enable or prompt
    • Run ActiveX and plugins – Enable or prompt
    • Script activeX controls marked safe for scripting – Enable or prompt

To run the multiple up & download you need to install a java Virtual machine. Latest version can be
downloaded from http://www.java.com. If several patches from java.com were downloaded and installed
earlier, Fronter recommends that all java-patches should be removed before installing a new version.
The Java software will need to be kept up-to-date as the newest versions are released.

It is also advisable to ensure that all the required plug-ins and viewers required to view content that is
being placed onto Fronter are installed and enabled, these may include Adobe Flash Player
www.adobe.com, Adobe Shockwave www.adobe.com, Windows Media Player and VLC media player
www.videolan.org. Discuss with your child’s teacher what content has been used that may require plug-
ins to be installed and enabled on your home computer.
