1. MANUAL OR MANNING GREENLEE (HUSBAND-OF-CIVILITY , PATRIARCH-IN-VIRGINIA )

born Bet. 1800 - 1810 in VA , and died 1840 in Greeneville TN . He married HAPPY BUTLER Abt. 1824 in
              10
Greenville SC , daughter of ANDERSON BUTLER and MOURNING - - - - -. She was born Bet. 1800 - 1810 in
              11,12 12,12
Greenville SC , and died 1849 in Greeneville TN .
Notes for MANUAL OR MANNING GREENLEE:
His parentage is unknown, but he is probably the son of Civility Greenlee, or perhaps the son of John and
Elizabeth Greenlee [both 1830 Census, Greene Co., TN].
Manual was born in Virginia between 1800 and 1810, but moved to South Carolina early in life. It is uncertain
whether he moved there with his parents while still a child or alone after he had come of age. There his met his
wife, Happy Butler. She was born in Greenville, SC, probably between 1799-1811. They were married at
Greenville, SC. Then they moved to Greeneville, Tennessee, where Francis Marion and the younger children
were born. The older children may have been born in South Carolina. Manual "was a farmer and resided in
Tennessee, Virginia and South Carolina," the Greenlee genealogy tells us (pg 556).
There is some question as to what his first name was. In Ralph Stebbins Greenlee and Robert Lemuel
Greenlee's Book (Hereafter RS&RL's), his name is given as Manual, and the entry is presumably from a
submission from his grandchildren. On the Tennessee 1830 Census Index, the name is interpreted as Marion; on
the 1830 Tax List, it is interpreted as "Mannon" in the Little Chuckey area. This last name is interesting, because
John and Easter Greenlee have named one of their boys "Mannon". In the South Carolina Magazine of Ancestral
Research, it is listed as "Manning".
Manual died young, "in 1840 at Greeneville, Green Co. Tennessee (Greenlee 556). He would have been
between 30 and 40, and did not live to see any of his children married. After five of their children were married,
Happy Greenlee also died in Greeneville, TN, 1849. She left four orphans under twenty.
The date of Manual's birth is according to the Tennessee 1830 census; but on his being born in Virginia - actually
each of the two Greenlee lines reported different locations for his birthplace. The descendants of the older son
reported to Ralph Stebbins Greenlee and Robert Lemuel Greenlee, compilers of the 1908 Greenlee Genealogy,
that Manual Greenlee was born in Virginia. Manual's younger son, James A. Greenlee (or his wife) reported to
the 1880 Iowa Census that Manual and Happy were both natives of Tennessee. (I figured out that the information
in the Greenlee Genealogy originated from either John H. Greenlee or Jackson Francis Greenlee, (both the
children of Manual's oldest son, Francis Marion Greenlee) because of the account's richness of information of
their portion of the family, and its ignorance of other parts).

Notes for HAPPY BUTLER:
"Happy Butler was born in Greenville, South Carolina [and was] the daughter of Anderson Butler," the Greenlee
Genealogy tells us. She may have still lived with her family in South Carolina in 1830 (1830 Census). Anderson
and her mother were still raising children. Anderson Butler was the son of John BUTLER b: 14 MAR 1723 and
Jane ANDERSON b: 10 OCT 1732.
Here are their children listed in the order they appear in Anderson's will. Anderson Butler 1787-1840 md

         1 girl born since 1820
1 girl born since 1820 (Lemenda?)
As shown above, they had twelve, unless Lemenda is a grandchild. Anderson Butler apparently came from
Virginia to South Carolina. He states in his will that "there is a legacy left unto me in the State of Virginia by law
from my relations J. W. named John Butler..." Hulda Butler, another sister of Happy and Laurana, lived near these
two Greenlee families (1830 Census). One girl, age between 5-10, lived with Hulda Butler. See also "Rainey"
Greenlee. LDS gives a good probability for his parents: John Butler and Jane Anderson: his dates are 14 Dec
1753. One batch gives his residence at Halifax VA (8702807, sheet 3) and the other gives their residence at
Henrico VA (7333814, pg 59).

                                                Notes for FRANCIS MARION GREENLEE:
The father of his wife Alpha Guinn was a friend of Andrew Johnson, the
future president and native of Greeneville, Tennessee. While still a
congressman, Johnson "returned from Washington in 1843 [telling]
such glowing tales of the new Territory of Iowa that Hyrcanus [Guinn,
Mrs. Greenlee's brother, Note 1], decided to go and look it over. He
came by horseback through Kentucky, southern Indiana, Illinois, and
crossed the Mississippi River at Burlington... from Iowa City west it was
little more than a trail along the south side of the Iowa River." He saw
only one building west of Iowa City. He stayed there until 1852 when
"Andrew Johnson was elected Governor of Tennessee. He (Andrew
Johnson) insisted that Hyrcanus come for the inauguration in 1853 so
Guinn took his family with him back to Tennessee. There he told his
family [the Greenlees etc.] and friends about the opportunities in the
new state so these people considered a move to the west. In 1855
they gathered twelve wagons, oxen, horses and mules and with
3 Francis Marion Greenlee families and possessions started for Iowa" (page 4,5).
There were 18 adults and 25 children on this wagon train:
Mrs. Holland specifies the families who came to Guinnville at this time:
"William S. Guinn and his wife, Mary (Greenlee), and five children,
Andrew Jackson Guinn and his wife Catherine (Farner), and six children,
Francis M. Greenlee and his wife, Emmaline (Guinn), and three children,
George Washington Ealy and his wife, Malvina (Greenlee), and seven children...
Andrew Jackson Ealy and his wife, Elizabeth (Greenlee), and two children,
James R. Ealy, James R. Catron, and his wife Isabella (Lauderdale), and one son,
John B. Greenlee and his wife Elizabeth (Lauderdale) and two children."
At least five of the eight children of Manual and Happy Greenlee made the trip together. Martha and Hulda
stayed behind in Tennessee, and probably Angeline, who was staying with Hulda's family and was sixteen at the
time.
Greenlee tells that "After a drive of five weeks in their wagon, on November 12, 1855 [Francis Marion and family]
drew up before the home of Hyrcanus Guinn on the Iowa River bottom, just east of where Belle Plaine now
stands." The stayed there "until spring, when they moved into a cabin just across the road from Mr. Guinn's."
Holland tells that when the wagon train arrived a sawmill was in operation and lumber was available to build
houses. The mill had been previously secured by Hyrcanus Guinn from the army (pg 6).
Greenlee continues, "In 1857, having become possessor of a prairie farm, Francis Marion Greenlee and Alpha
moved to Guinnville, a town established by another brother of Mrs. Greenlee [John Guinn], and which exists today
[1908] as an addition to Belle Plaine. It was then a mere cluster of four log cabins" (pg 557).

Francis Marion wrote about his early days in a letter: "wild turkeys were plentiful, and it was not uncommon to see
twenty or more deer in a herd. Indians were thick [numerous] and not inclined to be friendly, although we were
not molested" (Holland 8).
Greenlee also tells that "There was no railroad there, and the nearest points for market were Cedar Rapids and
Iowa City, where they hauled all their grain in wagons. After the Rock Island Railroad was constructed to
Marengo, it seemed only a short distance to market. in 1861 the North-western began grading its road, etc., and
[Francis Marion] Greenlee helped grade the track from the trestle bridge to Salt Creek" (557).
Francis Marion remained here until at least 1898, when Alpha and he "celebrated their golden wedding. he was a
Presbyterian; in politics, Democrat" (Greenlee).
Hyrcanus Guinn (1820-1890) was Alpha's brother and Francis Marion's brother-in-law. He was also the father of
Sarah Guinn, who married Columbus Greenlee, possibly a cousin to our Greenlees (See pg 537+ RS&RL's).
This Greenlee family also moved to Iowa around this time, but had come from Pennsylvania, and from England
before that.

               Notes for JOHN H. GREENLEE:
John H. Greenlee s/o Francis Marion and Alpha Greenlee, born 1 April 1861,
               m. Finetta J. Russell. She was the daughter of Sarah Greenlee, which is
somewhat of a mystery. She was probably either the daughter of Laurana
Greenlee (born 1836) or the daughter of John and Easter (born 1846).
Possibly this Sarah Greenlee is the daughter of Francis Marion Greenlee, but
this would not only make Sarah a 15 year-old mother, but would make John
               H. Greenlee marrying his niece. John and Finetta were still residing at Belle
Plain in 1908 (Greenlee). See also Martha Greenlee, d/o Mannon & Happy

Notes for JAMES A. OR P. GREENLEE:
The four youngest went to live with the four older, married children. The 1850 Census, all of the eight Greenlee
children of Manual and Happy, still sticking close together in Greene County, Tennessee, with three families
actually living next to each other.
James A. Greenlee may have come with Francis Marion on his wagon train, but Holland does not mention his
name (she only mentions the adult's names, and James may have been 17). Holland, however, tells of a later
wagon train as well: "Nearly all of the people who lived in and around Guinnville were from Greeneville,
Tennessee, and most of them had relatives still in Tennessee. The new settlers wanted someone from [Iowa] to
go and urge their friends and relatives to come to the new land of opportunity." So in 1860, the family of George
Washington Ealy ("Kern") and Melinda [Greenlee] undertook the trip. They attempted to lead a group "from
Tennessee to Iowa in the spring of 1861. They came by way of Arkansas and Missouri because their wagons
were of a wider gauge than those in the north and east" and the ruts left in the trails would have made travel
difficult. "The settlers were in northern Arkansas when the Civil War broke out" .
James would have been about 24 years old when the Civil War broke out. If James had come to Iowa on the first
wagon train in 1855, he may have served for the Union, probably then being a resident of Iowa. However, if
James Greenlee were on the second wagon train, he probably would have served with the Confederate Army.
The leader of the wagon train, James Greenlee's Uncle Kern Ealy, "enlisted with the 3rd Arkansas Calvary and
served for the duration of the war". I have been unable to find a roster for this unit, although such rosters are
becoming more common. When one is posted, I shall not only verify Kern's enrollment but also look for James.
Holland goes on to say that, "Those who were too young or too old to enlist went as far as Bald Knob, Missouri,
where they waited out the end of the war".
I found a James Greenlee serving for the home guard of Union County, AR. Bald Knob was on the border with
Arkansas. In 1850, there had been three Greenlee families living in Union Co., however, and so this may be one
of them.
James Greenlee may not have fought at all. His obituary states that he "lived for many years in Montana, where
he was crippled for life." Since we know he left Montana for Iowa about 1874, "many years" before that could
place him right in the middle of the Montana Gold Rush, which opened up in 1863 by the discovery of gold the
previous winter. In this case, James might have chosen to skip the war and hearing about he gold, he may have
traveled up the Missouri River to the rush. A bishop staying in Montana's mining towns in 1868-1869 said "There
were more [people] from Missouri than any other one state, and the next greatest number I think were from Iowa"
(Paul 140). Either way, it could describe James's situation.

However, there are still other possibilities. Many of the immigrants to the Montana Gold Rush were settlers who
had originally gone to California or Oregon in the 1850's. One history book tells it like this: "The forty-niners went
north to British Columbia in 1858, and eastward into Nevada the next year. Ignoring the North-South sectional
crisis and eventually the Civil War, others went in to Idaho, Montana and Colorado in the early 1860's" (Smith 12).
James could have been on neither wagon train, but could have crossed the prairies to California just before the
war, when California's gold rushes were still booming. Montana was still the wild frontier at this time. As late as
1879, a writer of western guidebooks said of Montana, "no other territory has been so isolated" (Paul 142). The
1870 Census does not list a James Greenlee, but due to the wildness of the territory, parts of it are quite
fragmentary. Searches of other records also proved futile.
James's business was hauling a dray wagon. He was a big man and while in Montana he broke his ankle
jumping off a wagon. After 1865, the settlers, as well as the goods, were usually brought up the shallow Missouri
River to Fort Benton.
"From Fort Benton the distance to the various mining towns was from 100 to 200 miles, over roads passable for
wagons" (Paul 54). Otherwise, the goods had to come from Salt Lake, five hundred miles away. During the
whole time Montana Territory was open, the wagons "flowed like a river." Yet, many books emphasize the danger
of the roads from hostile Indians and robbers. The dray coming in carried valuable supplies (sometimes a sack of
flour went for $25) and the dray going out carried the gold. Eventually, the citizens went vigilante, and the worst
gang was in fact their own sheriff and his men. The gang had been putting marks on the wagons that held
treasure when they left he stagecoach office. Whey they hung, the people could attribute 102 murders to them.
About 1874 James Greenlee moved to Guthrie Center, Iowa, west of Belle Plaine, where he "resided 19 years".
Today, there are 17 Greenlees buried in Guthrie County . Here, he married. His wife, Mary "Molly" McCoy, also
came from Tennessee and she, too, may have been on one of the wagon trains already mentioned. Only one
Mary McCoy is listed in the Tennessee Census Index of 1850 in Greene County, and she is the correct age:
                          Samuel McCoy 35 born TN
                          Jane, 30 born TN
                          Mary 4 (b 1846) Greene Co.
                          Sarah J. 2 1176-409
Of her life in Tennessee, little is known. Her mother died in her childbirth, it is said, and she was raised by one of
the family's slaves, but she had little respect for them. Such sayings are attributed to her as: " If you see a black
man with a white woman, you know he's in bad company." She spoke with a hard brogue. Here is the record of
their marriage. It is Molly's second one, and perhaps she was a Civil War widow. Molly would have been 31, and
James would have been 39.
From The Marriages of Guthrie County, Guthrie Co. Genealogical Soc. Jamaica, Iowa 1983:
James A. Greenlee and Mrs. Mary E. Morris 10 Apr. 1876
He and Molly lived across the rail from the main part of town.
Below is their census entry. After James an "X" is in the column labeled "maimed, crippled, bed-ridden or
otherwise disabled." James was known as "Cripple Jim."
From the family's ages on the 1880 census, we can calculate Frank's birthdate to within one year: 1880. Their
second child was Leslie Alexander; sine he was called Jim, either Leslie was called Jim's Jim or they were known
as Big Jim and Little Jim. Their youngest was a daughter named Irene, who died at age fourteen.
After James and Molly had these three children, they divorced. Her grandson Donald said she was a hard-core
alcoholic. The sons of Francis Marion Greenlee, when reporting information to form RS&RL's genealogy, did not
report this first marriage. Molly stayed in Iowa with Jim and Irene, but in 1891, James went to the Oklahoma Land
rush taking Frank, now about thirteen years old, and also his new wife Amanda and their two or three year old
daughter, Gay.
From The Marriages of Guthrie County, Guthrie Co. Gene. Soc. Jamaica, Iowa 1983:
James A. Greenlee and Amanda Dupuy 19 January 1888
The settlers in Oklahoma were given free land, needing only to stake out a claim and file the papers with the
government. James traded a dray team and wagon to get a fast horse; when the government agent fired a pistol

shot at noon, Frank rode out on the fast horse to stake out the good site they had found. James brought up a
wagon full of liquor, put a keg on a plank between two sawhorses and declared the first saloon in the territory
open for business.
The new city was named Cushing; the business prospered, boasting six full-time bartenders . The book Young
Cushing in Oklahoma Territory by Laura Lou Wells tells the story:
"Among these first buildings and businesses was James G. "Jay" Greenlee's Saloon, which was in the same
block of Mr. Robertson's home. In these early towns, a saloon was usually the first business to open, and this
was no exception in Cushing, for the saloon was on the town site from the very beginning of the town (p 24). Mr.
Greenlee, after abandoning his first saloon building, much too small to accommodate his trade, moved into a new
building a block east and across to the north side of the street (p 26 ).
"Greenlee's saloon was perhaps the most popular hangout in town and enjoyed the greater share of the town's
business. When it was evident that some men were spending too much of their time and money in the saloon,
Amanda Greenlee, wife of the saloon-keep, felt it her duty to intercede. She prepared baskets of food for families
in need and also provided clothing for the children whose father had been neglecting them by squandering his
money for liquor, and befriended them as best she could.
"Mrs. Greenlee and her children were prominent in the affairs of the town. The girls, Gay, Happy, and Katie, were
very beautiful and popular while Frank was a highly respected young man. Mr. Greenlee and his family had come
to Cushing from Iowa in 1893 and remained in business until his death in 1897... A street in the North Addition
bears the family name, and their family home remains as it originally was on the southwest corner of Cleveland
and Greenlee streets (p 26-27) .
From his obituary, we learn that on 10 November 1897, just short of sixty years old, James died at his home in
Cushing "of Bright's disease and dropsy. He leaves a wife and four children... The deceased was very generous
and liberal minded, and was charitable to a fault. He had no enemies, but many friends. He will be greatly
missed in the community." He was buried in the Payne County Cemetery .
On the first census to place the Greenlee family in Oklahoma (1900, seven years after the landrush), the name
"Alexander E." appears on the Soundex instead of "Amanda E." Also, a later record (Amanda's marriage to Louis
Jackson on Monday 18 September 1904), places Amanda's birthplace as Iowa, while the census says Illinois.
"Mrs. Greenlee left Cushing for the state of Washington in1912," Laura Wells reports ( 27).

                        Name Birth

                        Happy Marie(d) Oct 1897 OK

There is some confusion as to exactly what his middle name was. It appears as A.J. Greenlee in his obit, as
James G. "Jay" Greenlee in Young Cushing, and as James P. Greenlee in the Iowa 1880 Census, and James A.
Greenlee in RS&RL's genealogy.

Notes for MARY "MOLLY" MCCOY:
Only one Mary McCoy is listed in the Tennessee Census Index of 1850 in Greene County, and Mary's age
matches that of the Iowa Census.
Of Molly's life in Tennessee little is known. According to Donald Greenlee, her grandson, her mother died in her
childbirth, and she was raised by one of the family's slaves, but she had little respect for them. Such saying are
attributed to her as: " If you see a black man with a white woman, you know he's in bad company." She spoke

Although the name "Mary" had appeared on the 1880 census, the name "Molly" appears in the 1900 entry. Molly
would not have liked the spelling that the census-taker used. The Tituses said that this was the way the freed
slaves spelled the name. The "mother of" column here lists six children for Molly. These were probably Morris
children, and may have been grown by this time. (She was 31 when she married James Greenlee; she may
have been a Civil War widow.)
It seems that Molly married again after her divorce from James Greenlee, although Don and Mable did not know
of this. In the Dallas Genealogical Library the entry below was found. Don emphatically denied it could be so,
having visited his grand-mother during his childhood; however I later discovered that this Thomas Quail McCann,
Molly's last husband, died 8 Nov 1914, when Don would have been too young to make his acquaintance.
In addition, Guthrie County death records lists a Mollie G. McCann, died 26 June 1915, buried June 1915, Guthrie
Center Cemetery and this record lists her birth as 29 May 1845, Tennessee.
One final tidbit: Thomas Quail McCann, Molly's last husband, was the son of Thomas McCann and Emma Morris.
Remember Mary's first husband was a Morris!

appear on the 1900 census, then these dates can be arrived at with simple mathematics. (She may have died in the year
1900 but before the census was taken.)

While talking with Frank recently he said he well remembered the severe blizzard of [1888]. It started out nice
and warm in the morning and his father went after wood at the Circle Bar ranch about 12 miles from their home.
The family was left at the Richard Ealy home. By the time Mr. Greenlee returned and the family had started for
home it had turned severely cold. Mrs. Greenlee and the children covered up the best they could in the wagon
and Mr. Greenlee walked at the side of the wagon and drove to keep from getting so cold. The snow got to
blowing hard before they reached home. By morning it was a raging blizzard that left a never to be forgotten story
in its path of destruction.

Notes for JAMES N. GREENLEE:
Nancy, you have probably discovered your error by now, in naming James
M. Greenlee as the husband of Martha Craig, but I'll run this by you, just in
case.
Francis Marion Greenlee had a son, James N. Greenlee, and he is the one
who married Martha Craig 7 Mar 1883 in Benton County, Iowa. They had
children Clayton, Maud, Marjorie, Leona, Jessie, Opal and probably more.
There are many sources that bear this out - census reports, obituaries,
Benton County Histories, marriage records, birth records, cemetery stone, 8 James N. Greenlee
Francis M. Greenlee's will, etc.
Microfilm of the original county records "Benton County Marriages 1880-1894 Vol. I" correctly records that James
N. Greenlee, son of F.M. Greenlee and Alpha Guinn, married Martha Craig. Unfortunately, people have become
confused because of an error that was made in "Benton County Register of Marriages 1883-1899 Vol. II" where it
incorrectly names James M. Greenlee as marrying Martha Craig.

John Burton Greenlee had a son, James Marion Greenlee who married 1st Amanda E. (Ealy) Guinn. They
divorced and he married Eliza (Stevens) Sullivan. James M. Greenlee had no children of his own, but raised two
step-children and the son of his step-daughter. Again, this is borne out in many sources.
Hope I've made this clear. If not, or if you have questions, let me know.

Notes for FRANK ETHELBURT GREENLEE:
Accompanied his father to Oklahoma and participated in the Land Rush at Cushing. They opened a saloon there
(see father's account).
When the time came to divide his father's estate, the younger brother Leslie Alexander "James" took out a loan to
travel to Oklahoma for the funeral. He signed a power-of-attorney for his older brother Frank to sell the estate.
While James returned to South Dakota, however, his older brother Frank took off with one of the barmaids and all
the money. James, never to see his brother again, inherited only a pocket watch. On a trip to Cushing, Don and
Mable talked to the attorney who handled the probate for James and also to the man who had been Frank's best
friend. The friend was as surprised as anyone was when Frank took off with the money, and said Frank had
always insisted on handling the saloon very on-the-square and respectable.
He was listed as 5 months old in the 1880 census of Iowa, so he is probably the Frank Greenlee listed in the
Social Security Death Index (523-05-9400), who was born 11 Dec 1879, died Oct 1967, and was last known to be
living in the 94080 zip code area of California

Notes for LESLIE ALEXANDER "JAMES" GREENLEE:
Leslie Alexander "James" Greenlee became the sole remaining child of James A.
and Molly Mcoy in Iowa after Frank went to Oklahoma with James A. Greenlee
and Irene died.
James was a small man, and when he was young in Iowa he raced as a jockey
and made his living as a painter. When James and Glenn heard of the 10 Leslie Alexander "James"
homesteading in South Dakota they moved up there, he first tried house-painting, Greenlee
and then opened a barber shop in Wessington Springs; James joined the South Dakota National Guard.
When the time came to divide his father's estate (the saloon) James took out a loan to travel to Oklahoma for the

surprised as anyone when Frank took off with the money, and said Frank had always insisted on handling the
saloon very on-the-square and respectable.
After Donald was born, James and Glenn moved back to Iowa; James opened another Barbershop in
Marshalltown. When Donald was twelve, they moved to Minnesota. Don said his father seldom disciplined the
kids but when he did, he lost all sensible control. His father only beat him three times. Once he had been sent to
the store for something in the late winter and instead of walking to the bridge that crossed their little river, he
hopped from one ice floe to another. His father saw him.
In 1920, they lived in Greene Town on Water Street Butler Co.(?) ( Vol 10-ed 84-sh?-lin2)
They lived in several other towns, such as Twin Lakes and Mason. Much of their lives revolved around alcohol.
At Mason, James was fired when caught drinking hair tonic, for the boot-leggers had all been driven out of town.
Then Clarrissa Glenn packed up his suitcase and threw him out. He made his way up to Austin Minnesota where
Paul Titus lived, and for the next three years he didn't drink. At this time Donald got three paper routes so that he
could buy his own shoes and trousers; James sent money back from Austin. Eventually, he sent money for the
rest of the family to move up there. James died in 1963 and is buried Oak Grove Cemetery in Austin, Minnesota.

Notes for CLARISSA GLENN "GLENN" TITUS:
Glenn Titus's mother was Pauline, of the Cree, and her father was James Titus.
According to Donald Greenlee, his grandson, he was one of four Titus boys who
came from France to Canada. All four of the Titus brothers married Cree
women.
This is hotly disputed by Titus researchers.
James Titus and Pauline moved to Iowa. They moved to the South before
ending up in Marshalltown, Iowa, but where exactly is unknown, but it could be
that members of Pauline's family from the Cree Tribe came with them. One of
the daughters burned the paperwork that showed she was Cree so that no one
would know. My grandfather Donald Theodore Greenlee said that freed slaves
were forced to spell the name with a Y: "Greenley" and that this story came to
him from the Tituses. I have no idea how the Tituses came to have the story of
how the Negroes had the spelling of their names changed. 11 Clarissa Glenn Titus

              Eloiese Greenlee
Died at Moorefield, Neb., Eloiese Esther, the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Greenlee. Born October 27, 1907, died
February 26, 1911, aged three years, three months, twenty-nine days.
Eloiese was a very bright child, and sunshiny in disposition. She died very suddenly. May God comfort the bereaved
parents. We talked to the people from 1 Peter 1:24. The bud bloomed, and the enemy blighted it, and the flower faded. But
with the returning spring the flowers will bloom again. Let us not sorrow, but wait for the blossoming bud in the kingdom
of God where the flower never will fade.
The little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Greenlee died Sunday afternoon and the funeral was conducted Monday
afternoon at the home six miles southeast of town by Rev. Adams. Burial in the Farnam cemetery. Little Louise was three
years and four months old. Appendicitis was the cause of her death and she was sick but one day. The sorrowing parents
have the sympathy of many friends.

Notes for DONALD THEODORE GREENLEE:
Donald Theodore Greenlee worked shoveling coal on a steam locomotive, when
young. Once, he rigged up a locomotive whistle to an automobile exhaust. He has
been known to have a sharp tongue and puts up with little nonsense. Grandpa

liked to explore pits and old houses; Tim and I, his grandsons, considered ourselves lucky if we were brought
along. From dumps he often retrieved the most unlikely things: objects barely broken or of good worth. He has
taken his grandchildren fossil hunting in the creek beds of Southern Minnesota, once building a rock garden from
fossil bearing rocks for Mable only to have to abandon it. The hill they were living on proved too windy for their
trailer home.
Don was in the National Guard and after boot camp traveled to San Francisco with one of his buddies. They
drove by car.
Don and Mable Adaline Keist married and lived most of their adult lives in Austin, Minnesota. He worked at
Hormel meat packing plant there and lost part of a pinky to one of the machines. Don was a man who liked to
keep busy. Even in his seventies he always had a keen eye for antiques and legs that didn't enjoy sitting down all
day. In their retirement years, Don and Mable often traveled to Texas during the winters. Grandpa would fish in
the lakes there. He knew of good places in Southern Minnesota, too, sometimes fishing for snapper turtles. He
also hunted deer. Donald learned and practiced such Native crafts as carving stone pipes and sand painting.
Mable enjoyed flea markets. In former years, the Don Greenlee's brothers and sisters would meet in Mower
County Park for reunions, often accompanied by turtle soup.
Don and Mable were the first generation to attend the Church of Christ, a trend that would continue for at least
four generations. At Don's wake, his granddaughter Teri Wilson read the following eulogy:
Thank you grandpa for all that you have given me. Thank you for showing me the beauty and wonder of God's
creations through your appreciation of the cry of the loons on a northern lake, the antics of the chipmunks in the
yard, the softness of a bunny's fur against my face, the colors of a sunset. Thank you grandpa for teaching me
how to dig fossils from the limestone and how they got there in the first place, for teaching me about
craftsmanship by showing me places like the Old stone barn, for teaching me about life by letting me be a part of
yours. Thank you grandpa for sharing with me your stories and your heritage and your hobbies and your skills.
Thank you for taking time to answer my questions with detailed answers of why, what for, when and how. Thank
you grandpa for loving me unconditionally, even when I felt completely unlovable, for letting me be your
apprentice and for believing in me.Thank you grandpa for being part of my daughter's life and for sharing my joy
and wonder in her. Thank you for your strong and solid faith in a good and loving God, because I know that you
are with Him now, and free of pain and suffering and watching over all of us that love you.

Notes for MABEL ADELINE KEIST:
Mable Greenlee's grandfather was forced to adopt out his three youngest children when his wife, Rebecca
Marguarte Hines, died young. Harvey kept the name of his adopted parents. Although none of the children were
given middle names, the name Mable was given by adoptive parents who disliked the name Rebecca. Harvey
used the last name of his adopted parents. Samuel Keist was raised by his Grandma Hines. Morris for a time
lived with his brother-in-law, and joined the service to get away from him; he beat him belt and buckle.

fox kits, the latter of which forgot him when he went to boy scout camp. While still a kid, he took his rifle out
hunting with his friend, which he wasn't supposed to do without his father. An accident occurred, and he shot
himself in the leg. Afraid to tell his father, he cut the bullet out himself, and his mother never heard of the incident
until after his death.

"Jim" (to continue the tradition of calling a son by his middle name
"Jim") joined the Air Force. While stationed in Newport, Virginia, he
was involved in an accident with an airplane taking off. He was in the
belly ball-turret and the plane landed in the water. He was knocked
unconscious and the pilot had to pull him out. While in the Air Force,
he suffered two injuries. He repaired jet engines, and in one incident,
his eyes were sprayed with some chemical which ruined his tear-
ducts and he had to use drops for the rest of his life. In another, a
man on drugs attacked his friend and his palm was sliced open.
After the Air Force, he worked at a dude ranch, and then went to
Minnesota Bible College, and married Marcia Lanham. For a while,
he preached at a little country church (London?) and Marcia played
the organ.
He became a policeman in Minneapolis, working a second job in the
evenings as a salesman at Sears. Mom always worried about him
when he walked the beat, yet he only drew his pistol once. He had 14 Raymond James "Jim" Greenlee
found a door unlocked on some commercial building downtown Minneapolis and entered the building. He heard a
clicking noise behind him like a hammer cocking and then he nearly shot their time-clock! Mom was glad when
he was moved into the jailhouse, yet it was there that he got into fights with prisoners who would either balk at
fingerprinting or the jail cell.
Eventually, he quit the force and worked full time at Sears.
He was killed in a motorcycling accident, and the family moved to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.

Patricia-the email I hoped I never would have to write
Pat was my best friend. We did everything together. 3 children, 7 grandchildren. She was the best wife, mother
and grandmother. Never a harsh word to anyone. We had 42 years together and we
were 6 weeks shy of our 40th wedding anniversary. When I got sick she made me
better.
Saturday night at 8:15 she went to a better place where she will no longer suffer. The
kids and I were with here last night at the hospital. During the last six months she
never complained and just kept soldiering forward with the treatments.
She will be buried in Burlington, North Carolina, and we will have a memorial service in
South Florida. I will let you know once everything is settled.
We appreciate everyone who has read these notes for the past 6 months. I read
everyone of your responses to Pat. She appreciated that so many people were
concerned about her.
                                                                                                           17 Patricia Greenlee
