HORTICULTURAL ADVICE

Top 10 jobs to do in spring

1. Keep weeds under control 2. Protect fruit blossom from late frosts
3. Tie in climbing and rambling roses 4. Sow hardy annuals and herb seeds
5. Start to feed citrus plants 6. Increase the water given to houseplants
7. Feed hungry shrubs and roses 8. Sow new lawns or repair bare patches
9. Prune fig trees 10. Divide bamboos and waterlilies

                                      Dividing grasses
Grasses are best divided in spring when their roots are in
                                      active growth.

Grasses from cool climates such as Deschampsia, Festuca,
Carex and Stipa that flower in early summer come into growth
in late winter and therefore are best divided in early spring.
Alternatively, divide from late summer to mid-autumn.

Grasses from warmer climates such as Miscanthus, Panicum,
Pennisetum and Molinia that flower after midsummer come
into growth later and subsequently are best divided in late
                                      spring.

Grasses need dividing when clumps become large and
congested. As cool climate grasses have a longer growing
season they generally need more frequent division.

Lift clumps from the soil and split using two forks inserted
back to back in the centre of the clump. In some cases a saw
or axe will be needed. Sometimes the clumps can be too large
to handle, so small segments can be prised off the edges with
                                      a spade.

Small grasses (Hakonechloa) and sedges (Carex) can be
divided by tearing the lifted clumps apart by hand. After
replanting keep the plants well watered until established.
