                                                Description
In the 1890s, the U.S. Army thought it could replace the horse with the newly developed and
highly popular ―safety bicycle.‖ To test this theory, the army sent 20 African-American soldiers on
a ride from Fort Missoula, Montana, to St. Louis, Missouri—2,000 miles away.
The years 1450-1750 brought enormous changes to the North American continent. The native
Americans, or Indians, as the Europeans came to call them, first encountered European explorers,
and before long, saw their world transformed and largely destroyed by European settlers. And
European explorers not only ventured to the lands and natural wealth of the Americas; they also
traveled to Africa, where they began a trans-Atlantic slave trade that would bring millions of
Africans to the Americas as well. This slave trade would over time lead to a new social and
economic system: one where the color of one's skin could determine whether he or she might live
as a free citizen or be enslaved for life.
The story of the American Revolution as traditionally recounted is the saga of the thirteen colonies
fighting their colonial ruler, Britain, for independence. But an equally compelling part of the story
is the personal, religious, and legal challenges of African Americans of this period and their allies
to slavery. The spirit of liberty and the disruptions of the Revolutionary era encouraged African
American men and women to choose sides -- both Patriot and Loyalist -- and fight to define what
this nation would become.
During its first 50 years the United States transformed itself from a small republic into an
expansive democracy for white Americans. The nation tripled its population, doubled in size, and
extended slavery to parts of the Western frontier. For black Americans, this same period was a
contradictory mix of community-building for free blacks and entrenched enslavement for those not
yet emancipated. Slavery grew stronger, as the invention of the cotton gin and a booming
Southern economy fueled the push westward. In cities like Philadelphia, free blacks sought equal
participation in American society by building churches and schools, forming beneficial societies,
and petitioning their state legislature. In the aftermath of the Haitian Revolution (1791-1804),
several slave uprisings, including Gabriel's Rebellion (1800), Denmark Vesey's Plot (1822), and
Nat Turner's Revolt (1831), were poignant reminders of the human desire for freedom --
As westward expansion took hold, the question of whether the United States would be a proslavery
or antislavery nation took on new importance. In the North, antislavery forces included
abolitionists, who wanted a future without slavery so that black people could be free, and Free Soil
advocates, who resented having to compete with owners of slave-tended plantations for use of
new lands. White Southern planters wanted a future for themselves and their prosperous way of
life, which depended on the institution of slavery. As the New York Tribune announced, "We are
two peoples. We are a people for Freedom and a people for slavery. Between the two, conflict is
inevitable." Rising conflict led to Civil War in 1861, and the country was torn asunder. After four
years and the loss of 617,000 American lives, the Union was saved, African Americans were
promised the rights of citizens, and slavery was abolished.
In 1926, just a few months before her death, Will Rogers described Annie Oakley as "the greatest
woman rifle shot the world has ever produced." As the star attraction of Buffalo Bill's Wild West
Show, she thrilled audiences around the world with her daring shooting feats. Her act helped fuel
turn-of-the-century nostalgia for the vanished, mythical world of the American West. Over time
she became an American legend -- the loud, brassy, cocksure shooter celebrated in the musical
"Annie Get Your Gun." But that legend had little to do with the real Annie Oakley. Although famous
as a Western sharpshooter, Oakley lived her entire life east of the Mississippi. A champion in a
man's sport, she forever changed ideas about the abilities of women, yet she opposed female
suffrage. Her fame and fortune came from her skill with guns, yet she was a Quaker. This probing
American Experience production examines the dramatic life of a uniquely American icon whose
complex character manifested many of the paradoxes of the nation.
In May 1942, across the rugged sub-Arctic wilderness of Alaska, British Columbia and Yukon
Territory, thousands of American soldiers began one of the biggest and most difficult construction
projects ever undertaken. For eight months, they endured ice, snow and bitter cold; battled mud,
muskeg and mosquitoes; bridged raging rivers; graded lofty peaks; and cut pathways through
primeval forests to push a 1,520-mile road across one of the world's harshest landscapes.
For the leader of a small Caribbean nation, Fidel Castro has had an inordinate impact on the latter
half of the 20th century. The controversial, charismatic dictator has confounded American
presidents from Eisenhower to Bush, while surviving a CIA-backed invasion, countless
assassination plots, an economic embargo - even the collapse of his benefactor, the Soviet Union.
The story of Jesse James remains one of America's most cherished tales … and one of its most
fictitious. James, so the legend goes, was a western outlaw, though, in fact, he never went west;
America's own Robin Hood, though he robbed from the poor as well as the rich; a gunfighter,
though his victims were almost always unarmed. Less heroic than brutal, James was a member of
a vicious band of Missouri guerrillas during the Civil War. With a life steeped in violence and
bloodshed, he met what was perhaps the most fitting end.
Until the first transatlantic cable was laid, communication between North America and Europe took
at least a week. AMERICAN EXPERIENCE documents the grueling attempts to manufacture a cable
long enough to span the continents, and the challenges of laying it across the ocean floor - part of
a courageous adventure that would change communications forever.
New Orleans: the utterly original American city that lies at the mouth of the mighty Mississippi and
at the beating heart of the great American experiment. Walled in on almost all sides by water,
pressed together by the demands and dangers of geography, the crowded streets of New Orleans
have always been a laboratory where the social forces that characterize American life play out in
dramatic and, at times, disastrous fashion. Over two provocative hours, AMERICAN EXPERIENCE
tells the story of this remarkable city. Focusing primarily on the century from Reconstruction to
school desegregation in the 1960s, the film offers a portrait of New Orleans that both explores its
unique and distinctive culture and illuminates its central place on the American landscape.
Featuring the city's rich archival resources and a remarkable collection of on-camera
commentators, the film also includes a series of vérité-style portraits of New Orleans residents.
The resulting cinematic narrative is a dialogue between past and present that highlights New
Orleans' particular brand of humor, fatalism and wry rebelliousness, while raising critical questions
In 1883, the young Willa Cather was plucked from her luxurious home in Virginia and dropped into
the vast, tall grass prairies of Nebraska. It was an experience that terrified but exhilarated her,
and became the force behind all of her great novels: O Pioneer, The Song of the Lark, My Antonia,
Death Comes for the Archbishop and the Pulitzer Prize-winning One of Ours. Her life remains
mysterious - because she destroyed so much of her personal correspondence and insisted upon
specific restrictions concerning her work - and seductive, because she ignored every cultural
obstacle in her path. She was educated and well-traveled, she smoked and she talked tough, she
did not suffer fools and she often dressed like a man. She has been a great inspiration to women
writers and a great hero to women readers, rediscovered in every decade for the past 100 years.
On June 5, 1989, one day after Chinese troops expelled thousands of demonstrators from
Tiananmen Square in Beijing, a solitary, unarmed protester stood his ground before a column of
tanks advancing down the Avenue of Eternal Peace. Captured by Western photographers watching
nearby, this extraordinary confrontation became an icon of the fight for freedom around the world.
On April 11, veteran filmmaker Antony Thomas investigates the mystery of the tank man -- his
identity, his fate, and his significance for the Chinese leadership. The search for the tank man
reveals China's startling social compact -- its embrace of capitalism while dissent is squashed --
designed to stifle the nationwide unrest of 1989. This policy has allowed educated elites and
entrepreneurs to profit handsomely, while the majority of Chinese still face brutal working
conditions and low wages, and all Chinese must endure strict political and social controls. Some of
these controls regulate speech on the Internet -- and have generated criticism over the
involvement of major U.S. corporations such as Yahoo!, Cisco, Microsoft, and Google.
With 35 million people in America now age sixty-five and older, "the old old"-those over 85-are
now considered the fastest growing segment of the U.S. population. While medical advances have
enabled an unprecedented number of Americans to live longer and healthier lives, this new
longevity has also had unintended consequences. For millions of Americans, living longer also
means serious chronic illness and a protracted physical decline that can require an immense
amount of care, often for years and sometimes even decades. Yet just as the need for care is
rising, the number of available caregivers is dwindling. With families more dispersed than ever and
a healthcare system overburdened, many experts fear that we are on the threshold of a major
FRONTLINE addresses an issue of major consequence for all Americans: Is the Bush
administration's domestic war on terrorism jeopardizing our civil liberties? Reporter Hedrick Smith
presents new material on how the National Security Agency's domestic surveillance program works
and examines clashing viewpoints on whether the president has violated the Foreign Intelligence
Surveillance Act (FISA) and infringed on constitutional protections. In another dramatic story, the
program shows how the FBI vacuumed up records on 250,000 ordinary Americans who chose Las
Vegas as the destination for their Christmas-New Year's holiday, and the subsequent revelation
that the FBI has misused National Security Letters to gather information. Probing such projects as
Total Information Awareness - and its little known successors - Smith discloses that even former
government intelligence officials now worry that the combination of new security threats, advances
in communications technologies and radical interpretations of presidential authority may be
The rich and complex world of the West's native peoples, and their encounter with the first
Europeans to intrude upon their world.
More and more Americans move West, content at first to make their way into other peoples'
worlds, but then determined to make the whole region their own.

Gold is found in California - the world rushes in and the West is changed forever.
A struggle over Western land sparks the Civil War, and native peoples caught in the conflict pay a
terrible price.
Americans set out to build the transcontinental railroad, but its completion spells doom for millions
of buffalo that cover the plains.
Sitting Bull meets Custer at the battle of the Little Bighorn, while Chief Joseph eludes the U.S.
army in one of the most remarkable military campaigns in American history.
Homesteaders struggle to adjust to the harsh realities of the Great Plains, while Buffalo Bill Cody
offers his version of a "Wild West" that never was.
Native peoples' dreams of restoring their old world end in violence at Wounded Knee, as settlers
continue to build a new world on what was once Indian Territory.
As the old West seems to come to a close, native peoples and Mexican-Americans struggle to
adjust to a new West, while a pioneer family faces overwhelming odds and triumphs in the end.
The Boston Tea Party - At the direction of Benjamin Franklin, Moses, James and Henri travel to
Boston in search of Sarah, who has arrived from England on a tea-laden ship. When they get to
the Harbor, they happen upon the disguised colonists and discover they are raiding the very ship
Sarah is on. Intolerable Acts - Moses, James, Sarah and Henri hide at poet Phillis Wheatley's
house in Boston, where some of His Majesty's soldiers are being quartered. Hearing Phillis
Wheatley's story, Sarah is confronted with the horror of slavery for the first time. Later, though
Sarah does not agree with her new friends' thoughts about Mother England, she helps them in a
United We Stand - Moses lets James report on Congress and after a British sailor is "tarred and
feathered," James learns about the ugliness of mob rule, when emotions get in the way of
compassion. Sarah and Henri meet Abigail Adams and travel with her to bring supplies and
pamphlets to the occupied city of Boston. Sarah immediately finds in Abigail a strong female role
model to look up to. Liberty or Death! - James, Sarah, Henri and Moses travel to Virginia, where
