www.csirrunner.co.za No. 2 17th January 2010 It’s great to be a member of a popular running club! We have literally had a couple of dozen enquiries from people wishing to join the CSIR Running Club. It is great testament to what we are trying to achieve here. And to my knowledge, only two people will not be renewing their membership. One due to being transferred away from Pretoria and another simply because I saw him running in another club’s colours at Dischem today! I can confirm that the Nedbank Matha Series 21km scheduled for the 23rd January 2009 is CANCELLED. But, give AGN their due, they have arranged another event at very short notice, but it is a little different than normal – a 5000m and 10000m track event for all runners and walkers at Pilditch stadium, with no (yes, that’s right) no entry fee. The details are attached with the newsletter. Some very sad news came to my attention yesterday. George Koetzen the well-known announcer at most Gauteng races, including for the last 5 years at our very own CSIR 10km & 21km event, passed away of a heart attack while out cycling on Saturday morning the 16th January 2010. You may remember that he had had a heart attack in October last year and then had surgery to insert a stent in the arteries. He appeared to have made a complete recovery and I even had a few words with him on Wednesday evening at the Berg-en-Dal night race in Krugersdorp. He appeared to be hale and hearty. So, this came as a complete shock to me. Despite this, his Powerade caravan was manned by his staff at the Dischem Half-Marathon today. I take my hat off to them, as it couldn’t have been easy, but George would have wanted it. As he often said, “The show must go on”. Our condolences go to his wife & family during this sad time. Big, big news on our Time Trials and website. Look out for it below. So, the usual busy newsletter. Enjoy! Yours in running, Ken Swettenham Kenjohn@iafrica.com Tel: 082-444-3955 (011) 620-6618/9 office hours Fax: (012) 804-3732 [all hours] 2. SHORTS Time Trials: Every Tuesday 17:30. The Time Trials will start after the announcements from outside the Lapa near the Tarantaal. We have 4km, 6km and 8km routes available. Please join us for a drink in the Tarantaal afterwards! The committee has arranged that the LAST TUESDAY of every month will be designated a Special Time Trial evening. In a nutshell, each and every finisher of the official Time Trial will receive a voucher for one free drink in the Tarantaal (cooldrink, beer or single tot of spirits). In addition, braai fires will be lit (charcoal provided by the club) and we, will on a monthly basis have an “informal” social evening. Please provide your own eats and meat for the braai. It is a cash bar after you’ve had your one free drink. The terms and conditions of the free drink voucher are: - 1. You must be a paid-up member or social member of the CSIR Running Club. Page 2 2. You must start the Time Trial at the official starting time (17h30). The offer will not apply to people who wish to run at other times. 3. And you must actually run the Time Trial! All distances of 4km, 6km and 8km qualify. Simple. The first of these evenings will be the 26th January 2009. An e-mail reminder will go out that morning. The committee will gauge the success of these evenings and may add other innovations if the support is good. Please come along and run and chat with your fellow club mates. Club Clothing: This topic is going to be discussed at committee level. Look out for developments in this area. Can I speculate that we may get some new stuff this year? I hope so! Membership: All queries regarding membership may be directed to Annette Boshoff. She can be contacted on 076 743 6994 or firstname.lastname@example.org Club Colours: Club colours are available from Run-a-way Sport (Glenfair Shopping Centre, Lynnwood). They can be contacted on (012) 3613733 with any queries. Website: The new website will be live very soon, hopefully even as early as next week. We will send an e-mail out once we are aware that it is up and you may then have a look at it. It looks like the website address will remain www.csirrunner.co.za for the time being. Chantelle Breytenbach is overseeing the development of a new website. This will include many new features and it really looks as if it will be an exciting new initiative for the club. All ideas for the new website can be e-mailed to Chantelle at email@example.com Other Interesting Websites: www.runnersguide.co.za www.runnersworld.co.za www.runnerstalk.co.za www.legsofthunder.co.za www.raceresults.co.za Club Chairperson: Thabo Pooe. AGN League Thank you for the large numbers of club members who turned up for the first league race of the year. We had a good turnout and it was great catching up with some people we hadn’t seen in a while. Well Done! Comrades 2010 (just 132 days to go to Comrades 2010!) Entries for 2010 If you haven’t heard as yet, the CMA will be reopening entries on 30 January 2010 and have made 2,000 spots available. Please take careful note that entries will only be accepted at Mr Price stores countrywide, No Fax, Postal or Online entries will be accepted. This will be done on a first come first serve basis, and entries will close as soon as 2,000 entries have been received. This was not an easy decision for the CMA to make, but after careful consideration and deliberation between, the CMA Board, Management and Stakeholders alike, it was decided that an additional 2,000 entrants will be accepted. Should you or anyone you know of, missed the previous entry phases but still wish to enter the 2010 race, 30 January 2010 will be the last opportunity for entries. Qualifying period for 2010 will be as follows: 24 May 2009 to 26 April 2010. Runners who finished the 2009 Comrades Marathon can use their finishing time as a qualifier for 2010. As in 2009, runners will be able to enter before they qualify. This means while all entries will have to meet the entry criteria above, runners will still be allowed to qualify in official qualifying races up until the month of April 2010, with the 26th April 2010 as the final cut-off date. Upon qualification, runners simply need to submit the time and details of the qualifying race through to the CMA office. Upon receiving the qualifying information the runner’s entry will be confirmed. Licenses for 2010 (for South African athletes only) With the new opening and closing dates of entries for Comrades 2010, athletes will not be in possession of their 2010 licenses by the time of entry, however athletes will still have to comply with the rule that they must be licensed through an officially registered athletics club affiliated to Athletics South Africa in order to run the 2010 Comrades Marathon. As with the new qualifying criteria, you will be able to enter for Comrades 2010 before having received your 2010 license. You will however have to submit your club name and license number to the CMA before or by the 26th April. Failure to submit these details will result in your entry being rejected. Please note that the CMA will verify your license details with your club. The list of CSIR Running Club entrants for the 2010 Comrades Marathon will be updated in this newsletter after the next entry window has closed. ! "# ! Date of Race - Easter Saturday, 3 April 2010 Closing Date for Entries - Wednesday, 3 March 2010 Website : http://www.twooceansmarathon.org.za/ Note that entries will close as soon as 10 000 entries have been received, even if this is before closing date. NO LATE ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED (where have we heard that before? Ed). Runners cannot enter if they have not yet qualified. Postal entries must reach the TOM Office no later than 3 March 2010. There are currently 2 entry counters on the website to monitor number of entries. One is below the entry table, while you need to scroll down to 2010 to find the 2nd one. http://portal.twooceansmarathon.org.za/?q=node/56/ and http://portal.twooceansmarathon.org.za/?q=node/3 The race office is excited to announce that runners will be able to downgrade, upgrade, substitute or do seeding changes but that this will only be permitted during the week of 4 to 10 March 2010 and cost implications plus other conditions will be applicable. Minimum age for participation - Runners must be 20 on the day of the race to be eligible to run Licences 2010 The 2010 Licences are available at the AGN offices. There will be a slight delay in getting the 2010 licences to the club. The reason for this is that we have had a change in the Treasurer position on the committee for 2010 and we need to change signing powers at the bank in order to write out a cheque. The licences have to be paid for by the club upfront to AGN. The final fee structure for 2010 will be decided at the Committee meeting due to take place on the 12th January 2010. We anticipate that we will be able to start selling licences from our Time Trial on the 19th January 2010. PLEASE NOTE THAT I SENT AN ASA REGIATRATION FORM OUT BY A SEPARATE E-MAIL EARLIER THIS WEEK. THE LICENCE FEES FOR 2010 ARE ATTACHED WITH THIS NEWSLETTER. IF YOU DID NOT RECEIVE YOUR ASA REGISTRATION FORM, PLEASE LET ME KNOW & I’LL RE-SEND IT. James da Silva / Paulo Peres You will be pleased to hear than James & Paulo are none the worse for wear after their motor accident on their way to the Pretoria Police Half-Marathon.
