BUFFALO, NY – Sixty four teams sharpened their skates and took the ice for the
second annual Labatt Blue Pond Hockey Tournament on Lake Erie at the Erie Basin Resource Li
Marina. Players began skating on eight man-made rinks as early as 7:15 a.m. Each
rink represents one division and eight teams broken down into two brackets. Each Tags
bracket of four teams play a round robin format. The winner of each bracket plays in labatt, labatt

the divisional championship games, starting at 4:15 and 4:30 p.m., respectively.
                                                                                                         buffalo pond

“Our goal was to deliver an authentic hockey experience that takes people back to
hockey’s roots,” said Peter Bodenham, director of marketing, for Labatt USA. “The
choppy, dull surface delivers hockey in its purest form. It can be tricky to skate and
maneuver and that’s part of the challenge.”

Labatt USA has been working with the City of Buffalo and Erie County to create the
ice surface. Over the past 10 days, firefighters used hoses to lightly coat the ice
surface and smooth out rough patches. City and county crews prepped the ice with
hoses, shovels and light equipment. The rink surface spans 136,000 square feet on
                a frozen Lake Erie.

“We’re really excited about this year’s tournament,” said Bodenham. “We’ve
expanded the level of players who can participate and lowered the age to 21 as our
                consumers requested.”

Ed Ellis of Performax Hockey Systems oversaw team and referee recruitment, game
scheduling and tournament day events. Teams, representing novice, intermediate
and advanced level players are comprised of four to six players, 21 years of age and
older, who play a four-on-four format, absent a goalie. Nets are six inches high and
six feet wide like the goals used in USA Pond Hockey.

"Labatt USA has proved that the City of Buffalo is one of North America's hockey
hotbeds," said Mayor Byron W. Brown."Thanks to the overwhelming success of last
year's Pond Hockey Tournament on the city's waterfront, this year's edition will be
larger, more entertaining and great fun for players and fans alike. I commend Labatt
USA for its commitment to the City of Buffalo and our region. They have helped
create a great winter sports and entertainment event that has demonstrated the
                attractiveness of Buffalo's four-season appeal."

“The Labatt Blue Pond Hockey Tournament celebrates Erie County’s love of hockey
and helps bring people to Buffalo’s waterfront,” said Erie County Executive Chris
Collins. “I want to thank Labatt USA for investing in our community and I am pleased
Erie County’s Parks Department could help implement this exciting event.”
