                The observance is a result of a demonstration on March 8, 1857 when women from
                New York City factories staged a protest over working conditions. An International            News Facts

                Alpha Phi Alpha also acknowledges the significant contributions of women of color
                in American and abroad. This summer at its 103rd Anniversary Convention in New
                Orleans, Louisiana, the fraternity will honor and celebrate a group of phenomenal
                women including Christine King Farris, sister of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; Hazel
                O’Leary, President of Fisk University, Susan Taylor, founder of Essence Cares,
                Xernona Clayton, founder, The Trumpet Awards; Martha Reeves and Mary Wilson of
                the hit Motown groups the Vandellas and the Supremes. In addition, the fraternity will
                recognize a group of women whose fathers are members of Alpha Phi Alpha
                Fraternity, Inc. They include Dr. Johnnetta Cole, Director of the Smithsonian Museum
                of African Art; The Honorable Judge Glenda Hatchett, Bishop Vashti Murphy
                McKenzie, Singers Lalah Hathaway and Yolanda Adams; Actresses Jasmine Guy,
                Debbie Allen, Phylicia Rashad, and Sheryl Lee Ralph to name a few who will be

                we salute all the members of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Sigma
                Gamma Rho and Zeta Phi Beta Sororities,” Mason said. “The women that comprise

                whole society through the arts, business, education and government. We consider
