                             Using the iPad
The iPad is quite different to Windows based PC’s, particularly in its use of finger
gestures to scale, rotate and delete items in its user interface. Before using this guide
you should briefly read the documentation that came with the iPad to familiarize
yourself with how to navigate the device and give you an idea of its capabilities.

Walkabout iPad Wireless Network Setup

screen similar to the one below. If you need to return to this screen at any time press
the big black button at the bottom of your iPad:
                                                          3

Tap the ‘Settings’ button.

Tap the ‘General’ button then tap the ‘Network’ button.
                          4

Enter your JCU username and password and then press the “Join” button.
                                                                                 7

screen above. Tap the “Accept” button to continue.

Setting Up Mirapoint Calendar Synchronisation
If you wish to synchronize your calendar with your computer using Mirapoint mail,
you will need to have Outlook and iTunes installed on your computer.
After iTunes and Outlook have been installed, the ConnectR connector should also be
installed. To download the ConnectR software open up mail.jcu.edu.au in a browser
and login with your username and password. Select ‘options’ at the top right of the
screen. A new window will appear. At the bottom of the window is a link with
instructions for installing and downloading ConnectR.

To sync your iPad you will need to open up Outlook and ensure it has synchronized
with Mirapoint (webmail).
Once synchronization is complete, plug your iPad into your computer with a USB
cable.

When iTunes starts on your computer ensure that calendar synchronisation has been
enabled by selecting the iPad in the devices list and selecting the Info tab.

Syncing over wireless is currently unsupported.

If you have synchronized your calendar and find that your appointments are scheduled
on incorrect times, ensure that your time zone is set correctly on your iPad under:

Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars->Time Zone Support.

THERE IS A KNOWN BUG THAT WILL CAUSE CALENDAR ISSUES ON
BOTH OUTLOOK, MIRAPOINT AND YOUR IPAD.
PLEASE DO NOT ENTER MULTIPLE RECURING EVENTS DIRECTLY
INTO YOUR IPAD!!!

(Adding single non-recurring events directly on your iPad will not cause issues.)
                                                                                   20

To turn the VPN connection on or off, press the black home key at the bottom of your
iPad and then tap the ‘Settings’ button.

Tap the ‘VPN’ button to toggle the VPN off or on.

If you have problems connecting, ensure that you are within 3G or wireless range and
then try enabling the VPN again.
If you are having difficulties connecting to the VPN on campus, turn off Wi-Fi and
ensure 3G is active.
The VPN will not authenticate through the “Walkabout” wireless network.
                                                                                        25

Global Roaming and Data Charges

Before you travel overseas email mobiles@jcu.edu.au or phone extension 4545 to
check if your phone has international roaming activated. International roaming
charges can be high and vary depending on the country you are visiting.

Be aware that Telstra data plans offered for use in Australia do not include
International Roaming data usage. International Roaming data charges are
substantially higher than domestic data charges. On average the rate for data is
$0.015per KB (which equates to $15.00 per MB) and 50c flag fall for each data
session initiated by your device.

Telstra have two International Data Plans available which provide you with a set
monthly allowance to use towards eligible data usage in selected countries. The plans
are casual and will continue on a month to month basis until you cancel the plan.

Here are some more tips to avoid arriving back in Australia with a huge bill for data
usage on your iPad:

Turn off your automatic email retrieval settings

Return to the ‘Home Screen’ by pressing the black button on your iPad.
                             26

Toggle the ‘Push’ control ensuring that it is in the OFF position and ensure that
‘Manually’ is selected beneath it.
“Push” is not supported by Mirapoint mail so you can ignore this setting but it is
probably wise to turn it off just in-case.
                                                                                     29

iPad and then tap the ‘Settings’ button.

                                                                                       31

Try to use wireless internet access where possible

Take advantage of internet cafés and wireless hotspots where available as these will
usually provide cheaper and faster internet access than is available via the 3G
network.
