The last few years have seen a surge in filmmaking
technology and this includes taking sophisticated
cameras underwater. Now more than ever before, the
secret lives of our oceans’ inhabitants are being
revealed to us through the use of high definition, high
speed and 3-D cameras.
These devices and the accessibility of global
communication through the Internet, television and
cinema are great assets for science, exploration and
conservation.
! This still image was taken from a standard definition video filmed by a Remote Operated Vehicle or ROV, launched
from expedition tourism vessel M.V. National Geographic Explorer whilst in Labrador, Eastern Canada. ROVs can
explore the ocean depths far beyond the range of scuba divers and send back images of undersea life that may not
have been recorded before.
A TOOL FOR SCIENCE AND CONSERVATION
Much maligned and misunderstood, the shark has
been portrayed throughout the ages as an
indiscriminate and mindless killer.
By joining them in their world and filming their
behaviour, public perception is slowly changing.
Momentary glimpses into the private lives of many
shark species have yielded a host of surprises
including their social activity and structure,
feeding behaviour and intelligence.
This couldn’t come at a more crucial time for
sharks as worldwide populations are being
decimated to extinction levels by global human
exploitation.

followed these sharks during their nightly feeding ‘frenzies’ revealing
teamwork and strategy.
# The unmistakeable and undeniably curious head of a Scalloped
Hammerhead shark as it approaches me at Cocos Island. Sitting
quietly on the sand, I was able to observe and film these
hammerheads slow down to the point of stalling, while small fish
swam off the reef to pick parasites and dead skin from their skin.
Hardly the ferocious maneater of legend.

Believed extinct until its rediscovery in the 1960s
! on remote islands off the coast of Chile, the Juan
Fernandez fur seal population has grown from
around 200 individuals to over 10,000 today.
As an increasing number species are declared
extinct, recording, preserving and hopefully
conserving what remains becomes all the more
important. Scientists and conservationists can
use video to ‘capture’ vulnerable species – this
record is an invaluable tool for analysis and
understanding, but also education, promotion and
campaigning.
# A bull Juan Fernandez fur seal makes his presence felt
just off a breeding beach. Swimming around me in a tight
circle he continually emitted a deep throaty vocalisation,
all of which was captured on camera. I backed off,
respecting his territory.
ADVANTAGES OF TECHNOLOGY
The moving image has a number of
advantages over stills. Entire
sequences of behaviour can be
recorded, highlighting subtlety and
detail missed by momentary
snapshots. This can be especially
useful when filming fast moving or
multiple subjects.
High definition technology including
superior lenses, sensitive light
sensors and computer software
are available to a broad spectrum
of consumers. Broadcast quality
images are now possible with even
relatively modestly priced cameras.
$ Filming the fur seals in the Juan Fernandez
Islands was a wonderful opportunity to see all
manner of interactions. Adults and pups, males
and females, all displayed varieties of social
behaviour. Their intelligence and curiosity also
showed as they investigated both the camera
and myself.

! armoured head of a scorpionfish and the vibrant
colours of colonial anemones. !

% Port Lockroy, Antarctica. Filming myself swimming over the skull of a
long-dead whale, the bones of which were dumped in the bay after whalers
had stripped its blubber. This provocative image contrasted with shots of TELLING A TALE
the bones as artificial reefs, feeding and providing shelter for dozens of
species, including spawning limpets. % The filmmaker can tell poignant, entertaining
or educational stories – capturing dramatic
moments and relating them to the audience:
from the creation of new life to the sorrow of
death, to changing our perceptions of the
world around us and provoking us into action.
Few other media have such power. As
interactive communications increase and
spread across the globe, with the explosion in
social networking and instantaneous
information upload there is even greater
opportunity for us to use the moving image to
discover, explore and protect our world. Ends.

predators. The camera catches streams of air bubbles erupting from the
penguins’ feathers as they flash past the lens, and more comical moments as one
swims between my knees. &
