Jeremiah Program is more than the sum of its parts. When the right elements come together, families are strengthened, webs of support are formed and people are inspired. With each Jeremiah Program success, we contribute to the success of the entire community. june 2007 Dear Friends, In 1992, a spark was ignited within Fr. Michael O’Connell as he heard then-Mayor Don Fraser discuss the plight of low-income mothers in Minneapolis. Fr. Michael rallied a group of business and religious leaders, educators, and neighborhood and government representatives to build a community coalition to help single mothers break the cycle of poverty for themselves and their children. This collective passion became Jeremiah Program, and there are countless people we depend on for our success. Established in 1998 in Minneapolis to serve 18 families, 21 additional housing units soon followed. Today, more than 250 women and children have called the Jeremiah Program campus home, and soon more will join us at our campus under development in Saint Paul. Jeremiah Program has clearly lit the flame of hope for the families it serves and future generations. At Jeremiah Program, women learn to work toward academic, professional and personal success. Through Life Skills coaching and personal education, they are given the resources to shift from an existence of isolation and frustration to one of hope, value and self-reliance. One family at a time, this spirit resonates throughout the community as Jeremiah Program graduates become better parents to their children, and exemplary role models in the community. This annual report highlights how the hope of possibility sparked by Fr. Michael continues to catch fire in so many ways. You’ll read how more people than ever are dedicating themselves to Jeremiah Program’s transformational and comprehensive program model where new opportunities arise and strengthen those touched by its success. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” Thank you for your thoughtfulness, your commitment and your generosity in helping Jeremiah Program fulfill its mission. gloria perez jordan President & CEO susan sands Chair, Board of Trustees breaking the cycle of poverty. Nursing Student, MCTC tara independence Jeremiah Program provides a supportive, empowering environment that allows its families to learn, grow and become economically self-sufficient. the freedom to dream—and grow For Amanda LaFrance, who describes her life before Jeremiah Program as “a blur” comprised of raising her son, working three jobs and trying to get an education, transitioning to Jeremiah Program provided a sense of relief—and renewed spirit. Upon entering the program, Amanda had a strong sense of independence. She just needed the time, support and life skills to refocus her drive and individuality for long-term life success. She seized every opportunity presented to her at Jeremiah Program, from her chance at formal, post-secondary education to life-skills coaching. “I never really back down from a challenge,” says Amanda, who today counts herself and her son, Tadan, as successful Jeremiah Program graduates. Today, Amanda is maintaining her “full-speedahead” attitude by continuing her studies in photography. She is on her way to a June completion of her certificate program at Duke University’s Center for Documentary Studies in North Carolina. She is also working for an arts organization as artistic director and photographer, following her passion and using her talent to promote and celebrate the work of non profits. It’s the fulfillment of a dream. “I love my work!” she exclaims. After walking through the doors that Jeremiah Program opened for her, Amanda is now proud to make her own way for herself and her son. And now her path of exploration and growth has come full circle: Amanda’s final project for her certificate program is a multi-media documentary of the lives of Jeremiah Program families, their paths toward independence and the realization of hopes and dreams. Women enter Jeremiah Program earning on average $8.39 per hour. They graduate earning on average $15.39 per hour. jennifer, graduate 2005 Jeremiah Program empowered me to be responsibly independent in so many ways. Independent, physically, from an abusive living environment. Independent, economically, from child care costs that completely drained the income from my part-time job. Independent, mentally, from self-defeating thoughts about what I couldn’t accomplish. Because of the comprehensive services of Jeremiah Program I was able to achieve and sustain the self-sufficiency that was in me all along. affecting and empowering change. Student of Culinary Arts, Le Cordon Bleu iesha achievement Families set personal, educational and professional goals. With guidance and encouragement from program staff and volunteers, these goals become reality. the engine of empowerment Tyrone and Delia Bujold are long-time Jeremiah Program volunteers and donors. Tyrone is also a member of Jeremiah Program’s Board of Trustees, privy to the participant and graduate achievements that keep him and Delia committed to the Jeremiah Program mission. “It’s a great example of human growth,” he says. “What I like about it is that we get to actually see it going on.” Tyrone and Delia note that their sustained program involvement is also centered on the program’s effects throughout the community. “Jeremiah Program is taking people out of the ranks of poverty, and putting them in positions where they become part of the community’s economic engine,” Tyrone says. Such accomplishments, say Tyrone and Delia, are clear to anyone familiar with Jeremiah Program. That’s why others are often moved by the experiences of families in the program, and spurred to support the mission. “I’ve just been so impressed with the kind of programming that Jeremiah Program does to teach daily living skills to the families, whether it is child care or health or budgeting and money,” says Rev. James Gertmenian, senior pastor at Plymouth Congregational Church and early supporter of Jeremiah Program. That growing support is seen in one of the program’s biggest achievements to date: the opening of its Saint Paul campus. By doubling the program’s capacity and expanding to another city, Jeremiah Program will be providing safe, affordable housing, education and child development services to empower even more moms and kids. Women enter Jeremiah Program with a high school diploma or GED certificate. They graduate with, at minimum, an Associate Degree, and thirty percent graduate with a four-year degree. lisa, participant Because of Jeremiah Program, I’m doing things I never thought I’d do. I’m on my way to becoming an ER trauma nurse and am laying the foundation for pursuing my Masters Degree after graduation from Jeremiah Program. More importantly, I’m finally becoming an empowered and determined advocate for myself and my son Benjamin. In fact, Xcel started with Jeremiah Program from the ground up, donating the land on which the Minneapolis campus sits. As a utility, the company has a unique business perspective of and appreciation for organizations such as Jeremiah Program. “Unlike a company in any other industry, we can’t just pick up and move if the economic climate is not looking good,” says John Pacheco, director of the Xcel Energy Foundation, adding that that company is literally connected to every one of its customers. “The stronger we build the community, the better our opportunities are for hiring from that community,” he adds. “That way, we give every one of our customers the service they need.” The Jeremiah Program experience results in meaningful changes that make lasting and measurable differences in the lives of its families and the greater community. As a result, Xcel Energy is especially aware of how Jeremiah Program comprehensively helps its participants and graduates develop stronger connections to their children, communities and local economies. Jeremiah Program accomplishes this by offering income-based rent and assistance in securing good paying jobs with benefits. It insists on empowerment training and enrollment in a postsecondary institution, and teaches its own Life Skills curriculum. Participants receive intensive individual coaching and help with personal development planning. Jeremiah Program children, if not school-age, are enrolled in the nurturing and state-of-the-art on-site Child Development Center. The result? An interwoven and ever-growing network of stable families, employees, businesspeople and citizens. Women enter Jeremiah Program with a history of uncertainty, poverty and frustrated hopes. Women selected for the first classes are currently enrolled in Empowerment training and are working with their Life Skills coach in anticipation of their new life at Jeremiah Program. The women already have demonstrated leadership skills and will help to provide the stability required to open a new campus. The beautifully designed residential facility will provide safe, affordable housing for thirty-eight families. It will include a child development center, Life Skills education classrooms and a community room. The opening of our second campus would not have been possible without the dedication of a core group of individuals who for three years provided guidance and helped to secure community support.
