Espoused demand
• Many alumni say that they would like to do more study • Because they enjoy it • Because they are worried about getting out-of-date • Many consider the DBA
•
Educationalists expect the demand to exist
• CPD happens in most professions • People do need to continuously develop in knowledge and skills • Ideas change – new ways of looking at management emerge

The DBA
• Too demanding for most • Not sufficiently problem focused • Too expensive
• • • •
Top-up courses
• For example, AMBA or groups of schools • Low realised demand – due to the wrong balance between perceived advantage and cost and time commitment
Alumni groups
• Variable success
Open short courses
• Demand in decline

Make CPD a professional requirement for managers
• Necessary for doctors, etc. • But, managers can practice without continuing certification • Attempts to establish certification for managers have failed – e.g. 1997 Management Charter Initiative in the UK
•
Organise lifelong learning for alumni
• Has this been a success anywhere? • AMBA has withdrawn from CPD

UK’s Chartered Management Institute
• Chartered Manager – requires continual CPD – small scale so far.
• •
Individual business schools formalising post-MBA studies
• MBA students sign up to continuing CPD at the start, or during the MBA • Cost-benefit equation for the schools does not work

Proposal for a Management Academy
• Sign up as a member for an annual fee • Receive personal guidance on individual CPD from Academy staff • Continuing Membership of the Academy contingent on successful completion of annual CPD • Academy sponsored by prestigious international bodies • Academy to maintain lists of approved suppliers of CPD – and pay costs out of the annual fee • For this to work, there must be widespread belief in the importance of CPD for managers, and a willingness of employers to privilege Members of the Academy
