The Honorable John E. Smith
New York State Court of Appeals
One Main Street
Albany, NY 12200

Dear Judge Smith:

I am currently a third year student at Syracuse University College of Law
writing to apply for a position as a law clerk beginning in August 2004. Enclosed
please find a resume, writing sample, three letters of recommendation and law
school transcript.

I recently completed a judicial externship with Judge Janet Johnson of the
US District Court, Northern District of New York. As a legal intern, I performed
extensive research and drafted bench memoranda on civil cases pending before the
court. I also prepared case summaries and had the opportunity to observe and
participate in the proceedings of a busy federal court.

During the summer of 2002, I clerked for the firm of Jones and Jones, a
small general practice firm in Auburn, New York. At Jones and Jones, I was
exposed to many areas of legal practice, and conducted legal research and wrote
briefs on a wide variety of civil and criminal law issues.

My experience as a judicial intern solidified my desire to work as a judicial
law clerk after graduation. As a result of my legal training and experiences, I
possess solid research, writing and advocacy skills which will allow me to
effectively perform the work of a law clerk in your chambers.

I look forward to hearing from you, and I hope to have the opportunity to
meet with you to discuss my application.

The Honorable Harry H. Hartson
United States Magistrate Judge
United States District Court for the District of Vermont
1000 Court House Way
Montpelier, VT 06789

Dear Judge Hartson:

I am currently a third year law student at Syracuse University writing to apply for a
position as a law clerk with your court to begin in August 2004. I have strong ties
to the state of Vermont and intend to practice law there after graduation.

Through my legal internships, I have had the opportunity to develop and refine my
research, writing and analytical skills. Last year, I interned with the United States
Attorney’s Office in Syracuse, New York. During this internship, I assisted United
States Attorneys by conducting legal research, writing briefs and legal memoranda,
and preparing cases for trial. I am currently an intern with the Legal Advocacy and
Resource Center (LARC), a project of the New York State Bar Association. At LARC
I provide brief legal information and referrals at no cost to walk-in and hotline
clients. This experience has familiarized me with a broad spectrum of legal issues
and has provided my with an opportunity to improve my ability to explain legal
rights and processes to law persons.

In addition to these internships, my substantial volunteer experience working for a
United States Congressman, a District Attorney’s Office, a Public Defender
Association and a Victims’ Advocacy Group, have given me a solid understanding
of the adversarial process and the judicial system. Given my skills, experience and
sincere commitment to public interest work, I believe that I can make a valuable
contribution to your court as a law clerk.

Enclosed for your review are my resume, law school transcript, writing sample and
three letters of recommendation. I would greatly appreciate an opportunity to meet
with you to discuss my interest in serving as your law clerk during the 2004-2006
court terms. Thank you for your time and consideration.
