St Cath’s News Issue 9 Issue 1 24 March 2010 10 February 2010 From the Headmistress The Fourth Way of Educational Reform, part 2 Last week I related to you Andy Hargreaves’ argument that education has gone through three distinct ‘ways’ over the past 50 years: inconsistency in the 1960s and 1970s; standardisation in the 1970s and 1980s and a revamped version of standardisation in the 21st century. Hargreaves argues that our current ‘way’ is unsustainable and that we need to move to a fourth way which is ‘strategically driven not by markets and bureaucracy but by renewed professionalism and active democracy’ (p.29). He argues that the fourth way must be defined by ‘inspiration, innovation, social justice and sustainability’. Several societal changes will bring about the fourth ‘way’: First, the collapse of the global economy will make societies realise that, as well as being successful and competitive, they need to be sustainable knowledge economies. This will lead to a decline in standardisation and the emergence of innovation in teaching. We will present the large ensembles on centre stage and some small ensembles in the Magnolia Room. In addition to this, the committee has asked that we also supply wandering minstrels at various stations throughout the day. It is a day where all our ensembles take part in the festivities, and I have already discussed some performance options with the directors of each ensemble. Over the next week, I will also be discussing soloist options with our peripatetic teachers as to girls who would like to be wandering minstrels. This is open to girls in the Junior and Senior School. At this stage, I am asking for expressions of interest of young and older musicians who would like to be a wandering minstrel. Wandering minstrels may take the form of soloists, duets, trios, guitars and singers, just to name a few options.
