Mini-Lesson Procedure:
Objectives: 1. Form opinions/make judgments on the issues related to The Diary of Anne Frank
(list all that apply)
using an anticipation guide.
2. Examine/teach the history that surrounds The Diary of Anne Frank using jigsaw.
3. Read/analyze The Diary of Anne Frank.
4. Create products using the R.A.F.T. strategy.
5. Create a character web concept map using Inspiration 8.
Procedures: Type in the cell below.
1. Teacher will hand out an anticipation guide as a hook to gain student interest.
A. The teacher will direct the class in a discussion of the anticipation guide.
B. Video from United Streaming on the Holocaust will be used.
2. Teacher will hand out articles and information surrounding The Diary of Anne Frank. This is information that the
teacher feels will help the students understand Germany and the issues of the time period. (Points of interest: Anne
Frank, Adolf Hitler, Holocaust, Anti-Semitism, Jewish Faith, etc.)
3. The teacher will briefly show students a map of Europe and explain that The Diary of Anne Frank will involve this
area of the world, Adolf Hitler in Germany, and the Jewish people.
4. A KWL Chart will be done on the overhead to find out how much the students know about this time period in history.
5. Using jigsaw the students will read the material and become experts on one article. The students will then go back
to their main group and teach what they have learned to the group. All articles will be discussed in this main group.
A. Students will have a note-sheet to put relevant information on each article.
B. The class will come back together to discuss all the new information found in the articles.
6. The class will read The Diary of Anne Frank out loud dividing the class into character parts.
A. The class will discuss literary elements and important information throughout the reading.
B. Reading quizzes will be taken along the way.
7. The class will choose one character from The Diary of Anne Frank. Using Inspiration 8, the students will create a
character outline of the character they chose. ( This template is found in Inspiration 8 under file, open template,
language arts, character web. Students may then manipulate the web.)
8. After reading The Diary of Anne Frank, the students will the the DI strategy of R.A.F.T to create a new product.
B. The students will use Microsoft Word to type their product.
