The concept behind the night leaves no room for people
to lose interest. The sharks could rumble a sports day,
lecture or appear on campus at any time unannounced
to perform Jackass style stunts, skateboarding tricks or
playfully wrestle students in front of the camera. Along
with photos, this footage is then shown on the screens
during the Shipwrecked night for the entertainment of
clubbers.
The sharks continue to get Shipwrecked further and
further afield. The team landed at Oceana Plymouth in
November last year and the brand has recently been
launched in Liquid & Envy Uxbridge with great success.
This is a real achievement as the previous venue Disco
Royale struggled for years to secure a student session, so
to launch and build a session with the figures going north
every week is a real credit to the Shipwrecked brand and
team.
Director Baz aims to hold Shipwrecked nights all over the
UK in the future, all the way from Plymouth to Aberdeen.
“My ambition is to have it in every city where there’s a
healthy student population and a Luminar venue,” he
said.
The quirky concept behind the night stems from Baz’s
close link to pirates. He explained: “My father traced our
family tree a few years ago and saw that my ancestors in
the 16th and 17th Century were pirates. I then established
and captained a rugby team whilst I was at University
that we called “The Pirates”, and later when I was a
student promoter I thought of the idea of shipwrecking
people. That’s where the sharks come in!”
Baz got into promoting whilst studying at Nottingham
Trent University. He then went on to run nights at The
Works in Nottingham and Creation in Cardiff when
they were owned by First Leisure. When he started
Shipwrecked he knew Luminar venues would be ideal
locations. “Liquid provides great opportunity to show
footage with the 360 degree plasma screens and so does
Oceana with the huge screens in the Ice House,” he said.
