					 Channel Allocation In Multi-Layer Cellular Networks

We address the queue-theoretic approach for handling channel allocation in multilayer cellular
network consisting of two types of mobile terminals namely low speed moving terminals (LSMT) and
high speed moving terminals (HSMT). Our motivation stems from the issue of blocking and handoff
calls, which can be managed by using optimal channel allocation scheme. We develop an algorithm
to assign optimal number of original channels and guard channels to each cell in the cluster of a
cellular radio network depending upon the blocking probability of the new and handoff calls. We
then study the behavior of channel adaptation under different user mobility patterns. The developed
allocation scheme is practically important in high-speed telecommunication networks wherein time
division multiple access (TDMA) is employed via Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM).
