MILLENNIUM FLAME

                                  The Millennium Flame was placed
in the Cathedral at a special
                                  Evensong on Sunday February 11.
                                  Canon Edward Probert, the
                                  Chancellor, welcomed the Flame,
carried in the ceremonial red and
The flame being welcomed at the gold glass torch by Hospice
end of Evensong (February 11) Trustee Ceri Hurford-Jones.
The flame is now on display in St Margaret’s Chapel where
it will remain until March 23. Visitors are invited to light a
votive candle in memory of a loved one. There is also a
small display, with information about the work of the
Salisbury Hospice, and at certain points of the day Hospice
volunteers will be present to talk with visitors.
The Flame represents the symbol of light in darkness and
as such symbolises the work of those in the Hospice who
strive to improve the quality of life for patients and those
close to them, at a time of bleakness and gloom.
It was originally used by Her Majesty, the Queen to light
the National Beacon on Millennium night. It has since been
used at many national and charitable occasions raising
money for good causes. Salisbury Hospicecare Trust is the
‘Keeper of the Flame’ until April 23, at which point it will
be handed to Marie Curie Cancer Trust.
