The best zoos do much more than simply display animals to visitors.
They play a vital role in conservation work, breeding species that
are in danger of extinction in the wild. By encouraging an interest in
wildlife, good zoos increase our awareness of the threats facing the
world’s animals and how we can all take action to conserve them.

                                                                               How do animals
                                                                               become endangered?
                                                                               Rising human populations and our reckless exploitation
                                                                               of the Earth's resources are bad news for wildlife. We
                                                                               burn forests, drain wetlands, uproot hedgerows – all
                                                                               to give us more space to live and grow food. We dump
                                                                               dangerous chemicals and pollute the seas and rivers.
                                                                               We introduce animals to habitats where they're not
                                                                               normally found, driving native species to extinction.
                                                                               We overfish the seas and hunt animals for pets,
                                                                               souvenirs and traditional medicine. Today, many
                                                                               species face extinction because of human activity.


                                                                               How can zoos help?
                                                                                                     All over the world, organisations

                                                                                                     animals at risk, and zoos have

                                                                                                                                                                                                           Animal enclosures are designed to encourage
